Why TheCrewHost for Veloren?

What actually helps on a Veloren server follows the game's .ron files and the way it generates worlds.

Full Access to the .ron Files

Edit settings.ron, admins.ron, whitelist.ron, banlist.ron and description.ron in the file manager. Forgetting a trailing comma makes the server fall back to its template, so double-check before saving.

Strong CPU for World Generation

Generating a custom world can take around ten minutes on a good CPU, even at standard size. The Ryzen 9 9950X shortens that wait and keeps chunk generation smooth during play.

Whitelist and Official Auth

Authentication runs through auth.veloren.net by default, so nobody can join under someone else's name. Once whitelist.ron has entries, only the UUIDs you list can connect.

Assign Roles from the Console

Type admin add in the panel console to make a user an admin or moderator. Before maintenance, shutdown graceful shows players a countdown and closes the server cleanly.

Character Database Backed Up

Characters and progress live in db.sqlite under userdata/server/saves. Automatic backups protect that file, and a manual backup before a version update is the safest move.

Weekly and Nightly Builds

Veloren moves fast, and client and server must be on the same build. After an update, all you need to do is make sure the server and your players stay on the same version.

TheCrewHost Veloren server hosting starts at ₺345.00 per month ($8.63) and runs the game's official veloren-server-cli. Veloren is a fully open-source, GPL 3 licensed voxel RPG inspired by Cube World, Breath of the Wild, Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft. Your server runs in our İstanbul datacenter on a Ryzen 9 9950X with NVMe storage, so players in Türkiye reach dungeons and towns with low latency. Through settings.ron under userdata/server/server_config you control the player limit, server name and view distance, while whitelist.ron and admins.ron manage access. With world_seed and map_file you can even generate a world built just for your group.

What do you get from running a Veloren server?

A Veloren server gives your friends or community an always-on space to explore the same procedural world together. Veloren is a sprawling action RPG with dungeons, towns, sky-high mountains, glider flight, mounts and a weapon-based skill system instead of fixed classes. It is developed in Rust by a volunteer community, its code and assets are open under GPL 3, and it is free, so nobody who wants to join your group has to buy anything.

Veloren's official servers can get crowded, and you do not set their rules. On your own server, you choose the world seed, player limit, group size, the town where new players spawn and the server rules. Fill in the rules field in description.ron and every new player sees the rules on first join and cannot play until they accept; if the rules change, the prompt appears again.

Your own server also gives you version control. Because the game evolves quickly, balance and content shift from build to build, and you decide which build your community stays on.

How much RAM does a Veloren server need?

Our Veloren plans start at Silver 6GB, and for a small group on the default world, Silver is the right starting point. Three things shape the server's memory use: how many chunks are loaded, how spread out players are and how big the world is. The area around each player is loaded out to their view distance, so the more players scatter across the map, the more terrain stays in memory. Lowering max_view_distance in settings.ron is the most effective way to lighten the load on a busy server.

Custom world generation is its own topic. x_lg and y_lg set the world's edge length in chunks as a power of two; the default of 10 means a world 1024 chunks wide. According to the official docs, raising a value by one doubles that edge and roughly doubles generation time and RAM use. If you plan to generate a world larger than standard, Platinum or above is recommended.

On the CPU side, the Veloren server spreads its work across multiple threads, and chunk and world generation benefit from extra cores. That is why Emerald's 6 vCores make a real difference for large, scattered communities or big world generations.

How do you generate and load a custom world?

In Veloren, the world is defined by world_seed and map_file in settings.ron. With map_file set to None, the server loads the default world bundled with the game. For your own world, put a number in world_seed and set map_file to Some(Save(())); on startup the server generates the world and saves it as a binary file in a maps folder.

Generation takes a while, and you will see little activity in the console meanwhile; the official docs treat roughly ten minutes on a good CPU as normal for a standard-sized world. Be patient and do not restart during that time. Once the world is saved, you must switch map_file to the Some(Load("maps/filename.bin")) form, or the server will try to regenerate the world on every start.

Change world size and mountain scale with the x_lg, y_lg and scale values inside the Save option. Pushing scale toward 4.0 gives roughly Earth-like mountains but calls for a larger map. spawn_town lets you choose the town where players first appear. The most common mistake in .ron files is a missing trailing comma, which makes the server ignore your settings and use the fallback template.

Admins, whitelists and authentication

The easiest way to grant permissions in Veloren is to type admin add followed by a username and a role into the panel console; the role can be admin or moderator. Staff are stored by UUID in admins.ron, and that file can only be changed through the server console or direct file access.

As long as whitelist.ron is empty, anyone with an account can join. Add a UUID and the server opens only to those listed; admins can also manage the list with in-game commands. Bans are kept in banlist.ron in detail, including who issued each ban, why and when, and IP bans live in the same file.

Authentication goes through auth.veloren.net by default, and players sign in with their free Veloren accounts. We recommend leaving it that way: with a custom auth server, players see a security warning when connecting, and with authentication disabled entirely, anyone can log in under any username, even an admin's. description.ron holds the server description and rules; you can write separate texts for different languages and choose the fallback with default_locale.

How do players connect to your Veloren server?

Players open Voxygen, the Veloren client, enter your server address as IP:port on the multiplayer screen and sign in with their Veloren account. The game's default port is 14004; if your panel assigned a different one, always share that. The simplest way for players to install the game and keep it updated is Airshipper, the official launcher.

The most important rule is version matching. Because Veloren develops quickly, client and server need to be on the same build; if one falls behind, the connection fails. If your server runs the weekly build, make sure your players are on the same week's release, and update the server whenever an update lands.

Before maintenance or an update, rather than cutting the server off, use shutdown graceful in the console with a time in seconds; players see a countdown and can log out somewhere safe. Add --reason if you want to include an explanation. Putting your server rules into description.ron lets newcomers know what to expect from your community from their very first login.

How to Set Up a Veloren Server

  1. 1

Pick a plan for your community and world size

Start with Silver for a small group on the default world. If you will generate a larger-than-standard world or host a big community, consider Platinum or above.

  2. 2

Check out and let the server install itself

Once payment clears, veloren-server-cli installs automatically and the userdata folder is created on first start. Watch the console until it reports it is ready for connections.

  3. 3

    Set the basics in settings.ron

Edit server_name, max_players, max_view_distance and max_player_group_size. Keep every trailing comma, save, and restart the server.

  4. 4

Generate your own world if you want one

Choose a world_seed, set map_file to Some(Save(())) and wait for generation to finish. Then switch map_file to a Some(Load(...)) entry pointing at the saved file.

  5. 5

Make yourself admin and set up the whitelist

Use admin add in the panel console to give yourself the admin role. For a closed community, add your players' UUIDs to whitelist.ron.

  6. 6

Share the address and the build

Send players the IP:port from your panel and the build your server runs. They enter the address in Voxygen, sign in with their Veloren account and join.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Veloren server owners ask most: RAM, world generation, version matching, admins and connecting.

How much does Veloren server hosting cost?
The cheapest way into Veloren server hosting is Silver 6GB at ₺345.00 per month ($8.63), the first plan on our Veloren list. There are 6 plans in total. A Ryzen 9 9950X, NVMe storage, automatic backups and free DDoS protection come with each one, and current prices are on the order page.
Which plan should I choose?
Silver 6GB is enough for a group of up to about ten players on the default world. For busier servers where players scatter across the map, choose Gold, and if you will generate a larger-than-standard custom world, go for Platinum or above. Remember that each step up in world size roughly doubles RAM needs.
Is Veloren free to play and host?
Yes, Veloren is completely free and open source under GPL 3. Players only need to download the game and create a free Veloren account. What you pay us covers the hardware running your server 24/7, the İstanbul location, backups and support.
How long does custom world generation take?
According to the official docs, a standard-sized world takes about ten minutes to generate on a good CPU, with little progress shown in the console. Larger worlds take roughly twice as long for each size step. When generation finishes, switch map_file to the Load form, or the world will regenerate on every start.
Why can't players connect?
The most common reason is a version mismatch: in Veloren, the client and server have to be on the same build. Tell your players which build the server runs and update together. The next suspect is the port, so always give players the IP:port shown in your panel.
How soon is my server ready?
Installation starts automatically once payment is confirmed, and the server comes up on the default world shortly after. When the console says it is ready to accept connections, players can join. If you plan a custom world, allow extra time for that first generation.
How do I become an admin on my Veloren server?
Type admin add followed by your username and a role, either admin or moderator, into the panel console. Staff are saved by UUID in admins.ron. Keep authentication enabled; without it, anyone could log in using an admin's name.
Are backups and DDoS protection included?
Yes. The db.sqlite file holding characters, your .ron settings and any generated world file are backed up automatically, and we suggest a manual panel backup before each version update. Free DDoS protection is included on every plan to keep attack traffic away from your world.
Can I upgrade my plan later?
Yes, move up from the customer area whenever you like; your world, character database and settings carry over. Upgrading when your community grows or when you want a bigger generated world is a nicer fix than cutting view distance.
