What an addon-heavy Garry's Mod server needs to stay organized and smooth.
Gather addons, maps and gamemodes in one Steam Workshop collection and attach it with +host_workshop_collection. The server checks the collection for updates on every restart.
Edit hostname, sv_password, sv_loadingurl, sv_allowcslua and the sbox_ limits in garrysmod/cfg/server.cfg. The server reads that file on every startup, so changes take effect on the next restart.
Upload your own scripts to lua/autorun/server, admin mods such as ULX and ULib to addons, and DarkRP to gamemodes over SFTP. No folder is hidden from you.
A Garry's Mod server runs physics and most Lua work on its main thread. The Ryzen 9 9950X's high clock speed helps hold tickrate steady on a crowded DarkRP map.
Workshop collections, map packs and mounted CS:S content quickly reach tens of gigabytes. NVMe SSD storage speeds up downloads, startup and map changes.
DarkRP and TTT servers that show up in the server browser are frequent targets. Free DDoS protection filters attack traffic so your players stay connected.
Garry's Mod server hosting at TheCrewHost starts at ₺240.00 ($6.00) per month and runs the Source dedicated server (srcds) around the clock on Ryzen 9 9950X hardware in İstanbul. Run Sandbox, the bundled Trouble in Terrorist Town, DarkRP, Prop Hunt or any gamemode you pick from the Workshop, and manage addons through a single Steam Workshop collection with +host_workshop_collection. You get full file manager and SFTP access to server.cfg and the lua and addons folders, so admin mods like ULX are yours to install. NVMe storage speeds up loading large map and model packs, and free DDoS protection keeps a publicly listed server reachable.
A Garry's Mod server is the game's Source-engine dedicated server, and the gamemode you choose defines the experience. Sandbox is the default, built for physics play and building. Trouble in Terrorist Town ships with the game and is the social deduction mode with innocents, traitors and detectives.
DarkRP is the classic Garry's Mod roleplay gamemode, with jobs, money, buyable doors and laws. It comes with the FAdmin admin tool and FPP (Falco's Prop Protection) built in. Rather than editing the core files, you customize it through the separate darkrpmodification addon, defining jobs in lua/darkrp_customthings/jobs.lua so updates never overwrite your work.
Prop Hunt, Murder, Deathrun, Jailbreak and Zombie Survival can be added from the Workshop or from their developers. Gamemode folders go under garrysmod/gamemodes, and the server learns which one to load from the +gamemode launch parameter, with +map setting the starting map.
It comes down to your gamemode and how many addons you load. A TTT, Prop Hunt or Sandbox server with a modest addon list runs comfortably for up to 24 players on Bronze 4GB.
DarkRP is heavier. Every job, entity and custom system, whether an inventory, gangs or a police computer, adds Lua code and memory. For a 32 to 64 player DarkRP server with a solid addon set, Gold 8GB is our recommended middle ground. Servers running a large Workshop collection and many custom systems get extra headroom on Platinum 10GB or Diamond 12GB.
Two other resources matter as much as RAM. The first is CPU: the srcds main loop runs on a single core, so the extra vCores on Emerald and Xtreme help only a little on one server. The second is disk: map packs and model content easily reach tens of gigabytes, which is why the larger disks on higher plans make sense for big collections.
The cleanest approach is to put every addon and map you use into one Steam Workshop collection and pass its ID to the server with the +host_workshop_collection launch parameter. On each restart the server checks those addons for updates; set host_workshop_autoupdate to 0 if you would rather control updates yourself.
One point trips up many new owners: the server mounting an addon does not mean players will download it. For every addon that contains models, materials or sounds, add a resource.AddWorkshop line with its Workshop ID to a file in lua/autorun/server. Lua-only addons do not need one. If the current map is part of the collection, clients are told to download it automatically.
Content from outside the Workshop can go into garrysmod/addons, and sv_downloadurl points players at a FastDL web host for quicker downloads. Many TTT and DarkRP maps depend on Counter-Strike: Source content; the server mounts it through mount.cfg, and players who lack it see purple-and-black checkerboard textures and ERROR models.
server.cfg lives in garrysmod/cfg and is read every time the server starts. hostname sets the name shown in the server browser, sv_password the join password, rcon_password the remote admin password and sv_loadingurl the page shown on the loading screen. Leave sv_allowcslua at 0, or players can run their own clientside Lua. In Sandbox-based modes, sbox_maxprops, sbox_noclip and sbox_godmode keep prop counts and player powers in check.
A Game Server Login Token (GSLT) is the Steam key Garry's Mod has expected every server to use since May 2020; servers without one take a severe penalty in server browser ranking. Create one on Steam's game server account page using App ID 4000, then pass it with +sv_setsteamaccount.
For administration, ULX is the most common choice. It depends on the ULib library, and both go in the addons folder. Run ulx adduser from the server console to make yourself superadmin, then type !menu in game to open the XGUI panel. On DarkRP, the bundled FAdmin also does the job.
Physics is the number-one cause of lag on Garry's Mod servers. Hundreds of touching props, huge welded contraptions and deliberate prop spam multiply the physics work the server has to finish each tick. Capping props per player with sbox_maxprops and tightening FPP settings on DarkRP are the first lines of defense.
Poorly written addons come next. Think hooks that run every frame, code that spams Lua errors and two addons fighting over the same job keep the CPU busy for nothing. When the console shows the same Lua error repeating, remove that addon temporarily and measure the difference.
Player complaints like "I keep downloading addons" or "everything is purple and black" usually trace back to missing resource.AddWorkshop lines or missing CS:S content. An oversized collection also stretches first-time joins into minutes, so trimming addons nobody uses helps the server and players alike. And when a server will not start after an update, the most recently added addon is the right place to look first.
Players can search for your server's name in the Garry's Mod server browser or add the IP and port to their favorites. The quickest route is opening the console and typing connect followed by the address from your control panel. Source servers default to port 27015, but always use the exact address the panel shows.
A valid GSLT matters for showing up in the browser and ranking well there. For a private community server, set sv_password and share it only with members of your Discord.
New players download Workshop content before spawning in. Use the page you set with sv_loadingurl to show your rules, Discord link and Workshop collection, which encourages players to subscribe ahead of time. With the server in İstanbul, players in Türkiye get low latency, and those in Europe, the Middle East and the Caucasus generally enjoy a smooth connection.
Bronze 4GB suits TTT, Prop Hunt or Sandbox. For a 32 to 64 player DarkRP server with addons, Gold 8GB is a solid starting point.
On Steam's game server account page, enter App ID 4000 and create a token, then set it with +sv_setsteamaccount so the server lists properly.
Collect your addons and maps in one Steam Workshop collection, set its ID in +host_workshop_collection, and add resource.AddWorkshop lines for content addons.
Fill in hostname, sv_password, rcon_password and sv_loadingurl, then use +gamemode and +map to choose the mode and starting map.
Upload both addons to the addons folder, restart, and run ulx adduser in the server console to add your account to the superadmin group.
Post the IP and port from your panel in Discord. Players join from the server browser, their favorites, or the connect command in the console.
