What a voice relay server actually needs: a stable connection, privacy options and traffic without a cap.
Stop sharing the public default server with thousands of strangers and give your community its own. The NAME environment variable gives your server a recognizable name.
Use peerConfig.yml to force BetterCrewLink to run only through the TURN relay. With no direct connections between players, nobody can see anyone else's IP address.
When the TURN relay is active, a lobby's voice streams pass through the server. Unlimited traffic on our plans means no quota worries, even on crowded evenings.
PORT, HOSTNAME, NAME, HTTPS and SSLPATH set the server port, the address TURN uses, the display name and the certificate path.
Relayed voice is sensitive to the distance between players and server. An İstanbul location keeps voices from players in Türkiye from bouncing through a distant datacenter.

BetterCrewLink server hosting at TheCrewHost starts at ₺240.00 ($6.00) per month and runs the voice relay server behind BetterCrewLink, the proximity voice chat tool for Among Us, on Ryzen 9 9950X with 4 GB of DDR5 RAM. This is not a game server: your Among Us matches still play on whichever region you choose, while this server connects players in the same lobby and keeps their voices flowing. A built-in TURN relay steps in when players cannot connect directly, and you can route all audio through it to hide player IP addresses. Hosting in İstanbul keeps the path short for players in Türkiye, and every plan includes DDoS protection.
A BetterCrewLink server is not a game server; it is the voice relay server used by BetterCrewLink, an open-source proximity voice chat program for Among Us. BetterCrewLink runs on each player's PC next to Among Us: voices get louder as characters move closer and fade as they walk apart. That means you can talk outside emergency meetings and whisper to whoever is beside you in the corridor.
The server's job is to match up BetterCrewLink users in the same Among Us lobby and relay audio when needed. The game itself, lobbies and votes still run on the Among Us region you pick; this server does not replace them. If you also want your own Among Us region, you need a separate private game server such as Impostor.
The project is written in Node.js and TypeScript and is a community-built continuation of the original CrewLink. Its developers run a public official server for people who would rather not host; your own server is the alternative that belongs to your community and stays under your control.
In BetterCrewLink, audio flows peer to peer first: the server introduces players in the lobby and passes along their connection details. When players can connect directly, voice travels to the other side without touching the server. Some home networks, mobile connections and strict firewalls block those direct links, and that is where the TURN relay built into the server takes over and carries the audio itself.
You can change this behavior with peerConfig.yml in the config folder; it ships as peerConfig.example.yml and is activated by renaming it. The most interesting option forces BetterCrewLink to use TURN only: no direct connections are made between players at all, so nobody can see anyone else's IP address. For streamers and open communities that play with strangers, that is a meaningful privacy layer.
For TURN to work, the HOSTNAME variable must hold the server's address, and the project recommends a domain that is not behind a proxy. The developers also note that at very large scale, relay duty can be moved to a separate native TURN/STUN implementation.
Hosting your own BetterCrewLink server means your voice chat's stability and privacy no longer depend on how busy the public server is. A shared server can get sluggish at popular evening hours, while yours carries only your community.
Latency matters too. With the TURN relay active, every voice packet goes to the server before reaching the listener. With the server in İstanbul, that path is short for players in Türkiye, so voices are less likely to trail behind what is happening on screen. Players joining from Europe, the Middle East and the Caucasus generally get a good connection as well.
Finally, you are in charge. Turn on TURN-only mode to protect player IP addresses, give the server a NAME that identifies your community, and share the address only with members of your Discord. Because you can watch the server logs in the panel console, you can see why a player fails to connect instead of guessing.
A BetterCrewLink server is a very light Node.js application, and our Bronze 4GB plan is more than enough for all of a community's lobbies. It does not simulate a game; it passes connection details and relays audio when needed. As long as peer-to-peer connections work, the load on the server is tiny.
What raises load, and above all traffic, is the TURN relay. In TURN-only mode, every voice stream in the lobby passes through the server, which means network traffic much more than CPU work. With unlimited traffic on our plans, that scenario does not add any extra cost either.
Frankly, Silver and everything above it, up to Xtreme 32GB, is far more than a BetterCrewLink server will use; those tiers exist for heavy games on the same hardware line. A higher plan only makes sense if many lobbies in the same community run TURN-only and you want CPU headroom. For most Discord communities, Bronze 4GB is the right and sufficient choice.
Players connect by entering your server's address in the voice server field of BetterCrewLink's settings. The address is built from the IP and port shown in your panel; without HTTPS it starts with http://. One rule is critical: everyone in the same lobby must use the same server. If one player stays on the default server while the rest use yours, they will not hear each other.
The project defines the default port as 443 with HTTPS on and 9736 with it off; on our hosting, your assigned port is shown in the panel and must match the PORT variable. If you want HTTPS, you need a domain and a valid certificate, with its location set through SSLPATH. You can register the domain with us, too.
If a player cannot hear anyone, first check that the server address is identical for everyone, then that Among Us and BetterCrewLink are both up to date. If it persists, the connection logs in the console show whether the link never formed or the audio stream is what fails.
A BetterCrewLink server is very light; Bronze 4GB covers every lobby in a community. With unlimited traffic, the TURN relay adds no extra cost.
Setup completes automatically after payment. Your console, file manager and start and stop controls live at gamepanel.hostingmerkezi.net.
Match PORT to the port assigned to your server, put the server's address in HOSTNAME for TURN, and give it a NAME that identifies your community.
To hide player IP addresses, rename peerConfig.example.yml in the config folder to peerConfig.yml and enable TURN-only operation.
Pin the server address in your Discord and ask everyone to enter the same address in the voice server field of BetterCrewLink's settings.
Join an Among Us lobby with a few friends, walk your characters closer and farther apart to hear the volume change, and check the connection logs in the console.
