The file access, persistence and protection a Barotrauma dedicated server actually needs.
Server name, ports, player cap, password and game mode, all the way to karma and traitor settings, live in serversettings.xml. Edit it directly in the panel's file manager.
Upload mod folders over SFTP into LocalMods and enable them in config_player.xml. Custom submarines now arrive as content packages, the same way as any other mod.
Add your in-game name, Steam64 ID and the Admin preset to Data/clientpermissions.xml. From then on, kicks, bans and round control happen from inside the game.
KarmaEnabled and KarmaPreset punish griefing automatically, TraitorProbability sets the odds of a traitor, and RespawnMode decides what happens after someone dies.
The multiplayer campaign lives on the server, so the crew resumes at the same outpost every night. Automatic backups prevent something worse than a sunken sub: a lost save.
A Barotrauma server listed publicly can attract malicious traffic. Filtering happens before that traffic reaches your server, at no extra cost.
Barotrauma server hosting at TheCrewHost starts at ₺240.00 ($6.00) per month, and even the Bronze 4GB plan comfortably carries a full 16-player crew. Your server runs on Ryzen 9 9950X with DDR5 RAM and NVMe SSD and stays online when your PC is off, so the multiplayer campaign picks up exactly where you left it. With full access to serversettings.xml, Data/clientpermissions.xml and the LocalMods folder, you decide the karma system, traitor odds, respawn rules and mod list. Hosting in İstanbul keeps latency low for crewmates in Türkiye, and DDoS protection plus automatic backups are ready on every plan.
A Barotrauma server can run the multiplayer campaign, single missions, sandbox and PvP. The campaign is the favorite: the crew moves a submarine from outpost to outpost, earns money and upgrades both crew and vessel, and on a dedicated server that progress persists. Mission mode focuses each round on a single objective, sandbox is for free experimenting, and PvP pits two submarines against each other.
A server supports up to 16 players; the default cap is 8, and you can raise it in serversettings.xml. Empty captain, engineer or medic roles can be filled with bots, too: the BotCount and BotSpawnMode settings keep the sub running on quieter nights when only a few people show up.
The PlayStyle setting signals your style in the server list. Its options (Serious, Casual, Roleplay, Rampage and SomethingDifferent) separate a roleplay-focused crew from a chaotic fun server at a glance. Adding a language tag to the server name helps the right players find you.
Barotrauma's rules live in serversettings.xml, and the port and server settings there are the first thing to edit. The default game port is 27015 and the query port 27016; on our hosting, your assigned ports are shown in the panel, and the values in the file need to match them.
The settings that shape gameplay most: KarmaEnabled and KarmaPreset run the karma system, which automatically punishes players who hurt teammates or sabotage the sub. TraitorProbability and TraitorsMinPlayerCount set the odds of a traitor appearing in a round and the minimum player count required. RespawnMode picks how final death is, with None, MidRound, BetweenRounds and Permadeath, while IronmanMode makes it harsher still.
AllowFriendlyFire, AllowRewiring and LockAllDefaultWires are your strongest tools against trolls who rewire the reactor to sink everyone. SubSelectionMode and ModeSelectionMode, set to Manual, Random or Vote, leave the choice of sub and mode to you, to chance or to a vote. Stop the server and back up the file before editing.
Barotrauma mods go into the LocalMods folder on the server and are switched on through the content package list in config_player.xml. Take the folder of a Workshop mod you are subscribed to from your own PC, upload it to the server's LocalMods directory over SFTP, then add that package to the enabled packages in config_player.xml. Custom submarines, new missions and item packs are all content packages that arrive the same way.
For players it is simple: with AllowModDownloads enabled in serversettings.xml, joining players can download missing mods from the server. For big mods, asking players to subscribe to the same Workshop items still speeds up their first join.
Mod order and versions matter. After a game update an outdated mod can fail at startup, so update it or disable it for now. Always back up before adding a mod to a running campaign: some content packages get written into the save and can break it if removed later.
Barotrauma is a light server, and the Bronze 4GB plan is enough for all 16 players in a vanilla campaign. Because the game is 2D, the load does not come from a big 3D world; it comes from the physics, water and electrical systems inside the submarines, the creatures and the bots.
What pushes load up is large, complex custom submarines, lots of bots and extensive mod packs. If you plan a long mod list or a crowded crew topped up with bots, Silver 6GB gives comfortable room, and Gold 8GB covers very heavy mod combinations.
To be honest, Platinum 10GB and up, including Xtreme 32GB, is more than a single Barotrauma server will use; those tiers exist for heavier games on the same hardware line. What matters more for Barotrauma is a fast CPU and a server close to your players, which is exactly what the Ryzen 9 9950X and the İstanbul location provide.
To become admin, add a Client entry with your in-game name, Steam64 ID and the Admin preset to Data/clientpermissions.xml. Day-to-day moderation on a Barotrauma dedicated server happens inside the game: once you have rights, you kick, ban, start and end rounds and change settings while connected. Permission levels come from the presets in Data/permissionpresets.xml, so trusted moderators can get a more limited preset instead of full admin.
Players join by searching for your server name in Barotrauma's server list; if the server is not public, they can connect directly with the IP address and port. A password, if set, is asked for on join. On a modded server, missing content downloads during the join when you allow it.
With the server in İstanbul, latency stays low for players in Türkiye, and crew joining from Europe and the Middle East generally play comfortably too. With AllowVoteKick enabled, players can also vote a troublemaker off the sub.
Bronze 4GB handles a vanilla campaign for up to 16 players. If you plan a long mod list or lots of bots, start on Silver 6GB or Gold 8GB.
Barotrauma is installed for you as soon as the payment clears. Head to gamepanel.hostingmerkezi.net for the console, file manager, backups and start and stop buttons.
Stop the server, match the ports to the values in your panel and set the server name, password and player cap. Tune karma, traitor and respawn rules to suit your crew.
Add a Client entry with your in-game name, Steam64 ID and the Admin preset to Data/clientpermissions.xml. Your admin rights activate when you join.
Upload mod and submarine folders to LocalMods over SFTP, enable them in config_player.xml and check AllowModDownloads so players can fetch them.
Share the server name, launch the first campaign and take a manual backup from the panel after the opening session to secure the save.
