Why TheCrewHost for Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition?

Hosting that knows the Aurora engine's well-worn server layout, what persistent worlds need and what Enhanced Edition added.

The Right File in the Right Folder

.mod files go to user/modules, .hak files to user/hak, .tlk files to user/tlk and music to user/music. Some modules also want the override folder, and SFTP handles all of it.

Rules via Startup Parameters

Set your server's rules without touching the module, using nwserver options such as -pvp, -minlevel, -maxlevel, -elc, -ilr, -difficulty and -pauseandplay.

Safe Characters with Servervault

With -servervault 1, characters are stored on the server and players can only log in with those. It is the basic defense against edited characters on persistent worlds.

Automatic Hak Downloads via NWSync

With EE's NWSync, the haks and tlk files players need download automatically from a web address when they connect. You announce that address with the -nwsyncurl parameter.

Server Console Commands

Run nwserver commands such as status, clientinfo, say, kick, bankey, banname, forcesave and saveandexit straight from the panel console.

Smooth Modules on One Core

nwserver runs module logic on a single core. The Ryzen 9 9950X's high single-core speed keeps lag low in script-heavy areas and crowded fights.

Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition server hosting at TheCrewHost starts at ₺240.00 ($6.00) per month, and the entry plan's 4 GB of DDR5 RAM and Ryzen 9 9950X give Beamdog's nwserver-linux far more room than it needs. Your server stays online day and night in İstanbul, running a persistent world, community modules or DM-led sessions. Upload module files to user/modules, hak packs to user/hak and tlk files to user/tlk over SFTP, then set the PvP mode, level range, server vault and player and DM passwords through the startup parameters.

What can you run on a Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition server?

A Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition server runs any NWN module in multiplayer using nwserver, the dedicated server Beamdog distributes. Multiplayer is the most enduring legacy of the original 2002 game, and EE brought that setup to modern systems, which is why its communities are still going today.

The most common use is persistent worlds, or PWs: servers where characters are stored server-side, players role-play the same character for weeks, and the world has its own economy and story. Community modules downloaded from sites like the Neverwinter Vault, campaigns played with a group of friends, and sessions where a DM runs the scene live are all common too.

If you want to run the official campaign modules on your server, you need to copy the data folder from your own install as a game owner; the official modules live under data/mod. Building your own module in the Aurora Toolset and uploading it is the option with the most freedom.

Where do module, hak and tlk files go?

On an NWN:EE server, all community content lives in the user folder. The module itself, the .mod file, goes into user/modules; the extra resource packs it needs, the .hak files, go into user/hak; custom name and description tables, the .tlk files, go into user/tlk; and music goes into user/music. Some modules ask you to drop files into the override folder, so always read the module's description and README.

The -module parameter decides which module loads, and its value is the file name without the extension, character for character. A single upper or lower case difference stops the module from loading; the Module loaded line in the console tells you everything is fine.

For modules that use haks, players need the same hak files too. EE's NWSync solves that: haks and tlk files are published from a web server, nwserver advertises that address through the -nwsyncurl parameter, and players download missing content automatically as they connect. The address must start with http://. A web hosting space is all you need to host an NWSync repository.

How do you set PvP, servervault, ELC and passwords?

Your server's game rules come from nwserver's startup parameters. -pvp 0 turns PvP off, 1 allows it within parties only and 2 allows full PvP. -minlevel and -maxlevel limit which character levels may join, and -difficulty picks from 1 to 4, easy through very difficult, with 3 being the option most faithful to D&D rules. -pauseandplay decides whether only the DM or players as well can pause the game.

The essential setting for persistent worlds is -servervault 1: characters are stored on the server and players cannot bring characters in from outside. -elc turns on legal character enforcement and -ilr item level restrictions, and together they make it much harder to join with edited characters.

Passwords are parameters as well: -playerpassword protects joining, -dmpassword protects DM login and -adminpassword protects remote administration. -publicserver 1 lists your server on Beamdog's server list, and -servername sets the name shown there. -reloadwhenempty decides whether the module resets when the server empties, and persistent worlds usually keep it off.

Which plan and performance settings does a persistent world need?

An NWN:EE server is light. nwserver runs module logic on a single core, and most persistent worlds do not even reach a few gigabytes of memory, which is why Bronze 4GB is the plan we recommend for everything from small modules to busy role-play servers. Scripts are the real performance factor: heavy scripts running on every heartbeat and areas spawning lots of creatures at once push that one core, and that is where the Ryzen 9 9950X's high clock speed makes a difference.

For large PWs with hundreds of areas, big hak sets and heavy database use, Silver 6GB or Gold 8GB adds headroom. Plans above that go well beyond what nwserver needs. You can set the autosave interval with -autosaveinterval, and storing persistent data with the SQLite support EE added to NWScript is a common approach.

Many large persistent worlds use NWNX:EE, a community-made server extension that runs on Linux. Because NWNX:EE requires the server to be launched in a special way, we recommend talking to our support team first if you plan to use it.

How do players and DMs connect?

Players connect to your NWN:EE server from the game's Multiplayer menu. With -publicserver 1, your server appears on Beamdog's server list under the name you set with -servername; if you would rather stay unlisted, players can use the direct connect option with your server's IP address and port. NWN's default port is 5121, but the port assigned to your server in the panel is the one that applies. Every player needs their own copy of Enhanced Edition.

DMs connect through the game's built-in DM client mode, using the password you set with -dmpassword. A DM can spawn creatures, voice NPCs and steer the plot live, so share the DM password only with people you trust.

The panel console covers day-to-day administration: status shows connected players, say sends an announcement to everyone, kick removes a player, bankey and banname add bans, and forcesave saves immediately. With the server in İstanbul, players in Türkiye connect with low latency, and players across Europe and the Caucasus generally connect well too.

How to Set Up a Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition Server

  1. 1

    Start with Bronze 4GB

nwserver is light, so the entry plan covers most modules and persistent worlds. After payment your server is installed automatically and shows up in the panel.

  2. 2

Upload your module and hak files

Copy the .mod file to user/modules, .hak files to user/hak and .tlk files to user/tlk over SFTP. For official modules, use the data folder from your own install.

  3. 3

Set the module name and rules

Enter the file name without its extension, exactly as written, for -module. Choose PvP mode, level range, difficulty, servervault, ELC and ILR for your community.

  4. 4

Set passwords and the server name

Enter player, DM and admin passwords. To go public, enable listing with -publicserver 1 and add language and style to the server name.

  5. 5

Start and wait for Module loaded

Start the server and watch for the module to load in the console. If you use haks, set up an NWSync address or tell players where to download them.

  6. 6

    Invite players and DMs

Players find you in the Multiplayer list or connect directly with IP:port. Make sure your DMs log in with the DM password.

Frequently Asked Questions

What module builders and PW admins ask most before opening an NWN:EE server.

How much does Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition server hosting cost?
The plan we recommend for NWN:EE, Bronze 4GB, is ₺240.00 ($6.00) per month and offers 4 vCores of Ryzen 9 9950X, 4 GB of DDR5 RAM and 50 GB of NVMe SSD. Memory across our 7 plans runs from 4 GB to 32 GB, but thanks to nwserver's light footprint, most modules and persistent worlds run comfortably on the entry plan.
How much RAM does an NWN:EE server need?
In most cases 4 GB is more than enough; nwserver runs module logic on a single core and uses little memory. Silver 6GB adds room for large persistent worlds with hundreds of areas and big hak packs, and Gold 8GB suits database and script-heavy servers. Anything larger is more than NWN needs.
How do I upload community modules and hak packs?
Upload the .mod file to user/modules, .hak files to user/hak and .tlk files to user/tlk with SFTP or the file manager. Then set the -module parameter to the file name without its extension. If a module also needs files in the override folder, its README will say so.
Do players have to download hak files by hand?
Not if you use NWSync. With this EE feature, haks and tlk files are published from a web server and announced with the -nwsyncurl parameter, and players download missing content automatically as they connect. The address has to start with http://. Without NWSync, you need to tell players where to get the haks.
How quickly can my module be online?
As soon as your order is confirmed, nwserver is installed automatically and the server appears in your panel. Once you upload your module files and set the -module value, starting the server shows the Module loaded line in the console, and you are usually ready for players within minutes.
How do players and DMs connect?
Players use the Multiplayer menu, either from Beamdog's server list if -publicserver is 1 or by connecting directly with IP:port. The default port is 5121, but the port assigned in the panel applies. DMs connect in the game's DM client mode and enter the password you set with -dmpassword.
Are characters and module progress backed up?
Yes. The panel's automatic backups cover the user folder on the server, including servervault characters, modules, haks and database files. Taking a manual panel backup before uploading a module update, and running forcesave in the console, keeps the risk of data loss on a persistent world to a minimum.
Am I protected against DDoS attacks?
Yes, your NWN:EE server gets the same free DDoS protection as every other plan. Persistent worlds listed on Beamdog's server list can occasionally be targeted, and the protection filters attack traffic before it reaches your server. For individual troublemakers, use the bankey and banname console commands.
Can I use NWNX:EE, and can I upgrade my plan?
NWNX:EE is a community-made extension for nwserver on Linux, and it requires the server to be launched in a special way, so talk to our support team first if you plan to use it. Upgrading your plan is always possible, and your user folder and characters carry over unchanged.
