Why TheCrewHost for NeosVR?

No hiding NeosVR's current state, just the file and resource access people still running the headless client actually need.

Sessions Defined in Config.json

Every headless client setting sits in Config.json in the Config folder. The startWorlds array defines each world's session name, maximum users and access level.

Auto Recovery and Saving

autoRecover, autosaveInterval, idleRestartInterval and forcedRestartInterval control how crashed worlds reopen and how often they are saved.

Fixed Port with forcePort

NeosVR uses LiteNetLib for networking and normally relies on NAT punch-through on random ports. The forcePort field pins a world to a specific port for direct connections.

tickRate and World Load

The default tickRate is 60. In complex, object-heavy worlds, that value and the maxConcurrentAssetTransfers setting directly affect CPU and memory use.

Honest Pre-Order Consultation

Because NeosVR's post-cloud situation is uncertain, we ask you to describe your setup to our support team first. If it is not workable, we tell you before you pay.

Local Data and Cache Backups

dataFolder and cacheFolder decide where data is kept on disk. The panel's automatic backups protect the Config and data folders.

NeosVR server hosting at TheCrewHost starts at ₺440.00 ($11.00) per month, with the smallest plan offering 8 GB of DDR5 RAM, a Ryzen 9 9950X and NVMe SSD. There is something important to know first, though: in August 2025 the Neos team announced it was winding down NeosVR's cloud services and said the game remains playable only in local, LAN and virtual LAN settings. The headless client, the server version that runs worlds without a VR headset, used to depend on that cloud. On our İstanbul server you get full access to Config.json, but we strongly recommend confirming with our support team that your setup is still workable before you order.

What is a NeosVR headless server?

A NeosVR headless server is the version of Solirax's social VR platform NeosVR that runs without a display or VR headset, keeping one or more worlds open around the clock and hosting users in them. Communities used the headless client for hangout spaces, event worlds and shared workspaces that stayed open while their owners were offline.

The headless client was distributed as a separate beta branch of the NeosVR app on Steam. The beta password for that branch was shared on Discord through a specific supporter tier of the Neos Patreon, and installing it required a Steam account with NeosVR in its library. On Linux, Neos.exe runs under Mono and reads its settings from Config/Config.json.

For networking, NeosVR uses the LiteNetLib library, and sessions are usually reached through NAT punch-through or relay on random ports, so classic port forwarding was not needed. A large part of that setup, however, relied on the Neos cloud, and that changed in 2025.

Where does NeosVR stand after 2025?

In its Cloud Services Farewell announcement on Steam, dated August 20, 2025, the Neos team said it was winding down NeosVR's cloud services and that cloud-based online features would no longer be available. The same announcement says NeosVR remains playable in local, LAN and virtual LAN settings.

That is a big change for a headless server. You can no longer count on cloud-dependent functions such as account login, worlds and inventories stored in the cloud, or the public session list. The public NeosVR build on Steam was last updated in December 2023. When we checked, the beta branch the headless client was distributed through did not appear in Steam's public branch list, so we cannot confirm that a fresh install is still possible.

Please read this page as information rather than a sales pitch. If you are part of a community that still uses NeosVR over LAN or a virtual LAN, and you have access to the headless files, talk your setup through with our support team before ordering. If you are looking for a separate, actively developed social VR platform, Resonite from Yellow Dog Man Studios has its own page in our game server list.

Which settings live in Config.json?

The headless client's settings file is Config/Config.json, made up of general fields and a startWorlds array. Among the general fields, tickRate sets updates per second, maxConcurrentAssetTransfers caps simultaneous asset transfers, and dataFolder, cacheFolder and logsFolder set where data, cache and logs go. loginCredential and loginPassword were for the cloud account and have largely lost their purpose now that the cloud is gone.

Each entry in startWorlds is one world. sessionName and description set the session's name and blurb, maxUsers the user cap and accessLevel who may join; the default file uses 32 users and Anyone. loadWorldPresetName opens a world from a built-in preset such as SpaceWorld, while loadWorldURL takes the address of a saved world, though worlds stored in the cloud may no longer be reachable.

autoRecover reopens a crashed world, autosaveInterval sets how often it saves, and awayKickMinutes sets when idle users are kicked. forcePort binds a world to a fixed port for setups that need direct connections. Loading mods through the community-made NeosModLoader was also possible.

Which plan fits which scenario?

The smallest plan we offer for NeosVR is Gold 8GB, which is enough for a headless server running a single simple world. World complexity drives the headless client's resource use: worlds packed with objects, scripts and high-resolution assets need more memory and CPU, and adding several worlds to startWorlds at once raises the load further.

Under today's conditions, though, the real question is access rather than hardware. With the cloud gone, the officially supported way to play NeosVR together is LAN or a virtual LAN. If building a virtual LAN means running network-level software on the server, a VDS with full root access may suit you better than our game server plans; our VDS page lists the Linux and Windows options.

That is why we do not recommend Platinum, Diamond, Emerald or Xtreme for NeosVR; paying for a big plan makes little sense given the current uncertainty. Starting on Gold 8GB after confirming your scenario with our support team is the sensible path.

How do users connect to a NeosVR session?

While the cloud services were running, users joined headless sessions from NeosVR's session list, through friend invites or through session links. Much of that depended on the cloud, so it can no longer be relied on after August 2025.

According to the Neos team's announcement, the supported route today is for users to meet on the same local network or over a virtual LAN. How a remote server fits into that depends on the network setup your community uses. Pinning a world to a fixed port with forcePort makes direct connection attempts easier, but we cannot guarantee that every client will be able to connect that way.

Where a connection can be established, the İstanbul location gives users in Türkiye low latency, and in VR, latency is especially noticeable in movement and voice sync. Describe the setup you have in mind to our support team, and we will work out together what is possible before you order.

How to Set Up a NeosVR Server

  1. 1

Confirm the situation and your scenario with support

With the cloud shutdown and headless branch access in mind, describe your intended use to our support team. If it will not work, you find out before ordering.

  2. 2

    Start on Gold 8GB

Gold 8GB is enough for a headless server running one simple world. After payment, the server environment is prepared automatically and appears in the panel.

  3. 3

Have the headless files and Steam access ready

The headless client needs a Steam account with NeosVR in its library and access to the headless branch. Make sure you actually have that access.

  4. 4

    Edit startWorlds in Config.json

Set sessionName, maxUsers, accessLevel and a load source for each world. Add forcePort for a fixed port and autoRecover for automatic recovery if you need them.

  5. 5

Start the server and test the connection

Once the console shows the world running, test connecting with a small group of users. Do not move to a bigger plan until you have seen the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

What you need to know about a NeosVR headless server before ordering, with clear and honest answers.

How much does NeosVR server hosting cost?
NeosVR plans start with Gold 8GB at ₺440.00 ($11.00) per month, including 4 vCores of Ryzen 9 9950X, 8 GB of DDR5 RAM and 70 GB of NVMe SSD. It is the first of 5 NeosVR tiers, which go up to 32 GB. Given NeosVR's current situation, we recommend talking to our support team before you order.
Does NeosVR still work?
In August 2025 the Neos team announced it was winding down NeosVR's cloud services. According to that announcement, cloud-based online features are no longer available, while the game remains playable in local, LAN and virtual LAN settings. Because headless servers used to rely on the cloud, they only make sense in limited scenarios today.
How do I get the headless client?
The headless client was distributed as a password-protected beta branch of the NeosVR app on Steam, with the password shared through a specific tier of the Neos Patreon. When we checked, that branch did not appear in Steam's public branch list. That makes it important to confirm you still have access before ordering.
Which plan should I choose for NeosVR?
If your scenario is confirmed, start with Gold 8GB, which is enough for one simple world. Platinum or Diamond can make sense for object-heavy worlds or several startWorlds entries, but we do not recommend large plans under today's uncertainty. If a virtual LAN needs network-level software, a VDS with root access may fit better.
How quickly is the server ready?
After payment is confirmed, the server environment is prepared automatically and appears in the panel. Installing the headless client, however, depends on your Steam account and access to the headless branch, and whether that is possible today depends on your access. That is why we suggest discussing the install with our support team first.
How do users connect to the server?
While the cloud was running, users joined through the session list and invites; those routes are no longer reliable. The route the Neos team supports is a local network or a virtual LAN. Binding a world to a fixed port with forcePort makes direct connection attempts easier, but we cannot guarantee every client will connect.
Are my worlds and settings backed up?
Yes, the panel's automatic backups cover the Config folder and the local data folders on the server. With the cloud gone, local copies matter more than ever, so we also recommend regularly downloading important worlds and your Config.json to your own computer over SFTP.
Is there DDoS protection?
Yes, every plan, NeosVR plans included, comes with free DDoS protection that filters attack traffic aimed at your server. Sharing connection details only with your community and keeping accessLevel restrictive add further protection.
Can I upgrade later, and is there an alternative?
Yes, you can move to a larger plan at any time and your files stay in place, though we suggest confirming your current setup works first. If you are looking for a separate, actively developed social VR platform, take a look at the Resonite page in our game server list.
