Hosting built around the fact that Foundry is a web application serving pages to browsers, not a classic game server.
Foundry's Node.js app stays up on our server, so players can edit character sheets, journals and inventory between sessions without the GM's computer being switched on.
Install systems like D&D 5e or Pathfinder 2e and any modules from the package browser on Foundry's setup screen, or upload packages to Data/modules and Data/systems over SFTP.
Scene art, tokens and music live on disk and are served to every player's browser. NVMe storage and unmetered traffic help large battle maps load quickly when you switch scenes.
Port, hostname, SSL certificate paths and the update channel live in Config/options.json. Lock the setup screen with an Administrator Password and control world access through user accounts.
Use Foundry's own backup manager for world and package backups and full snapshots before a major version jump, with the panel's automatic backups as a second safety net.
Because players connect straight from a browser, your server address is a shared link. Free DDoS protection filters hostile traffic so campaign night is not knocked offline.
Foundry VTT server hosting at TheCrewHost starts at ₺240.00 ($6.00) per month, and the entry plan runs the Node.js build of Foundry around the clock on 4 GB of DDR5 RAM, Ryzen 9 9950X cores and 50 GB of NVMe SSD in İstanbul. You no longer need to leave your PC on or fight your router's port forwarding: players open the server's /join page in any browser and pick their user. You bring your own Foundry license, and your worlds, game systems, modules and uploaded maps stay in a Data folder you fully control. Players can level up their sheets between sessions while you prep midweek.
A Foundry VTT server is the machine running Foundry Virtual Tabletop's self-hosted web application: the GM runs the game in it, and players join from a browser without installing anything. That is the key difference from a typical game server. There is no game client; the server delivers maps, tokens, dice rolls and character sheets to players as web pages.
You can run Foundry on the GM's own computer, but three problems show up quickly. The PC has to stay on for every session, the router needs a port forward, and a home connection's upload speed becomes the bottleneck when a big map is pushed to five players at once. A hosted install removes all of that and keeps the table open all week, so a player who levels up can sort out their spell list before game night.
One licensing rule matters here. A Foundry license allows only one installation to be accessible to other users at any given time. Once you move to a server, do not keep your home copy open to players as well. Players never need their own license; only the GM running the server does.
For most tables, the entry Bronze 4GB plan is enough, because Foundry's server side is a lightweight Node.js process. Lighting, vision calculations and most module logic run in each player's browser, so a heavy module stack strains your players' computers far more than the server.
What does use server memory is the active world's database. Long campaigns with hundreds of actors, journal entries and items, or content-rich systems like Pathfinder 2e, benefit from more headroom, and Silver 6GB covers that comfortably.
In practice, storage usually decides your plan rather than RAM. Purchased map packs, animated scenes and music playlists add up to many gigabytes, and our plans scale disk from 50 GB to 200 GB. Moving up a tier as your library grows is mostly about that space. Emerald and Xtreme are far more than a single Foundry table requires; consider them only if you are carrying a genuinely huge asset library.
Installing Foundry requires the license in your foundryvtt.com account; TheCrewHost does not sell the software or licenses, you buy them from Foundry Gaming. On your account's license page, choose Node.js as the platform to get a Timed URL. That download link only stays valid for a few minutes, so use it right after copying it, or download the Node.js zip and upload it over SFTP instead.
On first launch Foundry asks for your license key and acceptance of the end user license agreement. Next, set an Administrator Password in the Configuration tab; only someone with that password can reach the setup screen, create worlds or install packages.
Updates run from Foundry's own Update Software screen, and the updateChannel field in options.json decides which channel it follows. Before a major version jump such as V12 to V13, confirm that your game system and modules support the new version and take a full snapshot first. A single incompatible module can stop a world from launching.
Foundry's user data is split into three folders: Config, Data and Logs. Config holds options.json and the admin settings. Data contains the worlds, systems and modules subfolders, and the maps, token art and audio you upload sit in folders you create under Data as well. Logs is the first place to look when a module misbehaves.
Since Foundry V11, world databases use LevelDB. Those files are in use while a world is running, so the safe way to copy a world folder over SFTP is to shut the world down and return to the setup screen first.
Foundry's backup manager writes to a Backups folder inside your user data, and the official documentation notes that these backups generally do not include multimedia assets. For your map and music library, the panel's automatic backups plus an occasional SFTP download of the Data folder are what actually protect the visual memory of your campaign.
Players join a Foundry VTT server in their browser by adding /join to the server address, for example IP:port/join. On that page they pick their name from the user list and enter the password the GM set. The GM creates those users in the world's user management screen, and when each player is assigned ownership of their own character, they only see the sheets they are allowed to see.
Foundry's default port is 30000, but the port assigned to your server in the panel is written into options.json and that is the one used in the join address. If you prefer a domain name, point it at the server IP and set the hostname field in options.json.
Browsers require HTTPS for Foundry's built-in audio and video chat, which means pointing the sslCert and sslKey fields in options.json at your certificate files. Plenty of groups keep voice on Discord and use Foundry purely for the table. The İstanbul location keeps scene changes and dice animations smooth for players in Türkiye.
Bronze 4GB suits most tables; pick a plan with more disk if you own a large map and music library. Make sure your foundryvtt.com account has an active license.
Your server is provisioned automatically after payment. Grab a Timed URL for the Node.js platform from your license page and use it within minutes, or upload the zip over SFTP.
On first launch, enter the license key and accept the agreement. Set an Administrator Password in the Configuration tab to lock the setup screen against anyone else.
Install your system and the modules you need from the package browser, then create a world. Move existing maps and tokens into the Data folder over SFTP.
Add a password-protected user for every player, assign their characters and share the IP:port/join address with your group. Players open it in a browser and they are in.
What GMs ask most before moving Foundry VTT to a server: licensing, plan size, modules, joining and backups.
Our İstanbul datacenter runs on Ryzen 9 hardware, delivering low latency to players in Türkiye and good connectivity to Europe, the Middle East and the Caucasus.
