What a fast arena server actually needs: steady frame rate, flexible config and easy map management.
Raising sys_ticrate above the default makes play smoother but costs CPU. The Ryzen 9 9950X's single-core strength lets you make that choice comfortably.
Hostname, maxplayers, gametype, g_maplist, voting and mutators all live in one server.cfg you edit through the file manager or over SFTP.
Turn on mutators such as g_instagib or g_weapon_stay, or load the Overkill ruleset with exec, while knowing exactly which settings make a server impure.
With minplayers and minplayers_per_team, bots fill in while the server is empty and step aside as real players arrive; skill sets their difficulty from 0 to 10.
Fast-paced public arenas draw the occasional attacker, so every plan includes free DDoS protection with nothing to configure.

Xonotic server hosting at TheCrewHost gives you a server that installs automatically on a Ryzen 9 9950X with DDR5 memory and NVMe storage in İstanbul, from ₺240.00 (about $6.00) per month. Xonotic is a completely free, open-source fast arena shooter running on the DarkPlaces engine. Everything the server does is driven by data/server.cfg in the user directory: choose the default mode with gametype, open mode voting to players with sv_vote_gametype and bring in bots with minplayers while the server is empty. Upload custom maps as .pk3 files and set sv_curl_defaulturl so players can download them.
Xonotic grew out of Nexuiz and runs on the DarkPlaces engine as an open-source arena shooter. The game is free, and because the server side is fully open too, community servers are the heart of the game.
With the gametype setting you make one of these modes the default: dm (Deathmatch), tdm (Team Deathmatch), ctf (Capture the Flag), ca (Clan Arena), ft (Freeze Tag), kh (Key Hunt), dom (Domination), lms (Last Man Standing), ka (Keepaway), as (Assault), ons (Onslaught), inv (Invasion), nb (Nexball), rc (Race) and cts (Complete The Stage). Race and CTS are course races where movement skill and the clock decide the result.
Set sv_vote_gametype to 1 and players vote on the next mode at the end of each match, while sv_vote_gametype_options limits which modes appear in that vote. You can even define a custom mode with its own name and description. That flexibility lets you build a focused, serious CTF server or a relaxed community server where every match plays a different mode.
A Xonotic server is light. The server side of the DarkPlaces engine uses modest memory, so the Bronze plan with 4 GB comfortably carries a typical 16 to 24 player server and a large map archive.
Two settings change the CPU load directly. The first is sys_ticrate: the default of 0.0333333 corresponds to roughly 30 server frames per second, and dropping it to 0.0166667 doubles the frame count, smoothing out play while roughly doubling CPU use. The second is bots: filling the server with many bots through minplayers adds AI work for every one of them. The Ryzen 9 9950X's high single-core speed leaves plenty of room for both choices.
Silver makes sense if you plan a higher ticrate together with a crowd of filler bots and a very large map archive. Anything above that offers far more than a single Xonotic server can use, so starting on Bronze and upgrading only if needed is the right path.
A Xonotic server reads data/server.cfg from the user directory at startup. The server/server.cfg example that ships with the game is a good starting point to copy and edit. The essential lines are these: sv_public 1 reports the server to the public list, hostname sets the name, sv_motd the welcome message, and maxplayers the slot count including spectators.
For maps, g_maplist lists what gets played; leave it empty and the server detects every suitable map automatically. g_maplist_shuffle picks maps at random, and g_maplist_votable decides how many maps appear in the end-of-match vote. With g_warmup on, the match waits in warmup until players mark themselves ready with F4, which is handy for tournaments and clan matches.
For administration, rcon_password sets a full-access remote console password. For moderators who should have limited power, the rcon_restricted_password and rcon_restricted_commands pair allows only the commands you list. sv_vote_master_password lets players who sign in with vlogin run commands without calling a vote.
In Xonotic, a pure server is one that stays faithful to the game's standard balance. Obvious mutators such as InstaGib (g_instagib), weapon stay (g_weapon_stay) and the power-up setting (g_powerups) are allowed on a pure server. By contrast, changes like g_grappling_hook, g_jetpack, g_midair, g_vampire, g_cloaked or low gravity through sv_gravity make the server impure.
Being impure is not forbidden; most fun servers choose that path on purpose. Balance-breaking changes can push competitive players away, though. Decide based on the identity you want for the server.
If you want a different flavor of gameplay, look at the Overkill ruleset. To enable it, put exec ruleset-overkill.cfg at the very top of server.cfg, before any other setting; switching on g_overkill directly is not recommended. When you are unsure what a setting does, the search command in the game console or the command and cvar search tool on xonotic.org shows its description.
Xonotic maps come as .pk3 packages and go in the server's data folder. After uploading a map package over SFTP, add its name to g_maplist. Bots need a waypoint file to move properly on a map, and g_maplist_check_waypoints lets the server skip maps without waypoints when there are not enough human players.
Maps that players lack are downloaded over HTTP. sv_curl_defaulturl is the server's fallback download address for custom content, so if you host your maps on a web server and point this setting at it, players fetch missing files automatically. Any TheCrewHost web hosting plan can serve those files.
Players reach your server in two ways. With sv_public 1, they see its name in the in-game server browser. To connect directly, they type connect in the console followed by the IP and port from your panel. Out of the box Xonotic uses port 26000; on TheCrewHost, connect with whatever port the panel lists for your server. Make sure players run a game version compatible with the server.
Bronze is enough for a typical 16 to 24 player Xonotic server; consider Silver if you plan a higher ticrate and lots of filler bots.
Once payment is confirmed, the server installs itself, and the console at gamepanel.hostingmerkezi.net shows it loading the first map.
Base it on the example server.cfg, add sv_public, hostname, maxplayers, gametype and rcon_password, and tune voting and bot settings to your community.
Put custom .pk3 files in the data folder over SFTP, update g_maplist and set sv_curl_defaulturl so players can download what they are missing.
With sv_public 1 your server appears in the browser, and players can also type connect with your IP and port. Share the address on Discord.
