Why TheCrewHost for AssaultCube?

An AssaultCube server looks simple, but the detail lives in its config files, so that is where these features focus.

Configure via servercmdline.txt

Every server option is documented inside config/servercmdline.txt. Remove the // at the start of a line and edit the value; you can open the file straight from the panel's file manager.

Player-aware map rotation

Each line in config/maprot.cfg sets map, mode, time and voting. With minplayer and maxplayer, the server can play DM when it is quiet and switch to TDM or CTF when it fills up.

Blacklists plus DDoS protection

serverblacklist.cfg blocks single IPs, CIDR blocks or ranges, and nicknameblacklist.cfg filters unwanted names. At the network level, free DDoS protection runs on every plan.

Auth key for master server listing

Since AssaultCube 1.3 every server needs its own 64-character key. Pass it with the -Y option and your server registers on the public list; without it, the server stays LAN-only.

Bandwidth that does not choke

In AssaultCube, lag spikes usually come from the server running out of upload capacity. Unlimited traffic on a data center connection avoids most of the error-rate trouble home-hosted servers run into.

AssaultCube server hosting at TheCrewHost starts at ₺240.00 ($6.00) per month for a dedicated AssaultCube server running on Ryzen 9 9950X hardware in İstanbul. The AssaultCube server is a lightweight console process that uses very little CPU and memory, so even the smallest plan carries a full 16-player server with ease. Configure it in config/servercmdline.txt, set the map and mode order in config/maprot.cfg, and add the auth key version 1.3 requires to get listed on the in-game public server list. Every file is reachable from the web panel and over SFTP.

What game modes can an AssaultCube server run?

AssaultCube is a free, open-source fast-paced FPS built on the Cube engine, and your server can run every official mode. In the maprot file each mode is a number: Team Deathmatch 0, Deathmatch 2, Survivor 3, Team Survivor 4, Capture the Flag 5, Pistol Frenzy 6, Last Swiss Standing 9, One Shot One Kill 10, Team One Shot One Kill 11, Hunt the Flag 13, Team Keep the Flag 14 and Keep the Flag 15.

By default players can vote on the next map and mode. The server's mastermode can be open, private or match; for clan matches you switch to match mode and close the server to outsiders.

The setups communities run most often are 24/7 CTF servers, single-weapon fun servers such as pistol or OSOK, and passworded clan practice servers. All of them use the same server software, changing only the maprot and command line options.

How does an AssaultCube server get on the public list?

Starting with AssaultCube 1.3, a server needs its own auth key to register with the master server. Without one it still runs, but behaves like a LAN server and never appears in the in-game internet list.

You generate the key in the game client: type authkey new server in the console and a 64-character hexadecimal key is created and saved to config/authkeys.cfg. Copy the private key from that file into the -Y option in servercmdline.txt. When the server starts, seeing master server registration succeeded in the console means you are listed.

Two rules keep you on the list. The master server only registers servers set to 16 players or fewer, so keep -c at 16 or below. The maprot file also needs at least two different maps, because rotations that force the same map repeatedly may be removed. If you want a hidden server instead, the -mlocalhost option turns off master server registration entirely.

Setting up maprot.cfg and custom maps

Each line in the rotation file describes one round in this format: map:mode:time:vote[:minplayer[:maxplayer[:skiplines]]]. For example, ac_mines:5:10:1 plays ten minutes of CTF on ac_mines and lets players vote for a different map.

The optional fields are where the power is. minplayer and maxplayer make a line play only at certain player counts, and skiplines says how many lines to skip after that one is used. That lets the server run deathmatch with three players, switch to a team mode past eight, and never repeat a map back to back. Note that the player count is only checked when a new map is picked.

Custom maps must sit in the packages/maps/servermaps folder on the server; list a non-standard map that is not in that folder and it will not start. Upload the files over SFTP and use the map name without its extension in maprot. Keep in mind that CubeScript does not run inside maprot.

How do you manage admins, votes and blacklists?

Set the admin password with the -x option, or use config/serverpwd.cfg when you need more than one. In game, /setadmin 1 yourpassword makes you admin and unlocks extra management options in the menu. The join password for the server itself is set with -p.

The -P option decides, letter by letter, which votes are open to players and which only admins can call. Lowercase means players can use it, uppercase means admin-only; kick, ban, force-team, mastermode and team shuffle votes are all set through this string. On a public server, leaving kick and ban votes open lets players remove a cheater while no admin is online.

Block access by adding single IPs, CIDR blocks like 1.2.3.4/24 or IP ranges to config/serverblacklist.cfg. config/nicknameblacklist.cfg handles both banned nicknames and protected names. Also be aware that the AssaultCube team can ban proven cheaters centrally, and those bans can apply on your server even if the player is not on your own list.

Which plan is enough, and what drives performance?

Bronze 4GB is more than enough for an AssaultCube server. The server process loads no graphics and uses very little CPU time and memory; even a full 16-player CTF server uses only a small slice of 4 GB of RAM.

What really drives performance in AssaultCube is bandwidth and line quality. The game's own documentation notes that when a server's upload capacity is overloaded, every player suffers lag spikes regardless of where they are. That is why the error-rate indicator in the server list matters: green is good, red is bad. An unlimited-traffic data center connection avoids the problem home-hosted servers hit most often.

Moving to a bigger plan makes no noticeable difference for AssaultCube; the extra RAM and cores simply sit idle. Starting on Bronze and staying there is the sensible choice for this game.

How do players join your AssaultCube server?

Once your auth key is in place, the server appears by name in the server list in the game's multiplayer menu, and players join with a double click. Set the server description with the -n option and the welcome message shown in players' consoles with -o.

To connect directly, players type /connect IP port in the console. On a passworded server the password goes at the end of the same command, as /connect IP port password. AssaultCube uses two UDP ports: by default 28763 for the game and 28764 for server info. If a different port is assigned, the info port is always the game port plus one, so pass along the full port details from your panel.

A server in İstanbul gives players in Türkiye low latency. With AssaultCube's fast movement, that makes hits feel more consistent, especially in CTF and OSOK.

How to Set Up a AssaultCube Server

  1. 1

    Pick the Bronze 4GB plan

The AssaultCube server is very light, so the entry plan covers a 16-player public or a passworded clan server. A larger plan makes no difference for this game.

  2. 2

    Let setup run after payment

Once your payment is confirmed the server installs automatically and shows up in gamepanel.hostingmerkezi.net. Open the config folder in the file manager to start configuring.

  3. 3

Generate an auth key in the client

Launch AssaultCube, type authkey new server in the console and copy the private key from config/authkeys.cfg. The server needs it to register on the public list.

  4. 4

    Edit servercmdline.txt

Set the auth key with -Y, the server name with -n, at most 16 players with -c and the admin password with -x. Remember to remove the // from the lines you enable.

  5. 5

Write maprot.cfg and start the server

Build a rotation with at least two different maps and upload custom maps to packages/maps/servermaps. Once the console shows master server registration succeeded, you are listed.

  6. 6

    Invite your players

Share the server name or the /connect IP port command with your community. On a passworded clan server, remind players to add the password at the end of the command.

Frequently Asked Questions

What people ask most before starting an AssaultCube server: price, auth keys, maprot and connecting.

How much does AssaultCube server hosting cost?
The Bronze 4GB plan, which is all AssaultCube needs, costs ₺240.00 ($6.00) a month and comes with 4 GB of DDR5 RAM, 4 vCores on a Ryzen 9 9950X and 50 GB of NVMe storage. 7 plans are listed, yet the game is light enough that a full 16-player server never needs more than the entry tier.
How much RAM does an AssaultCube server need?
Very little. The AssaultCube server is a console process with no graphics, and it uses only a small part of 4 GB of RAM. We recommend Bronze 4GB; the extra memory and cores in bigger plans would sit idle. Connection quality affects performance far more than hardware does.
Why is my server not showing on the public list?
AssaultCube 1.3 requires a server-specific auth key to register with the master server; without it the server only shows on LAN. Generate one in the client with authkey new server and put it in the -Y option. Also check that -c is 16 or lower and that maprot contains at least two different maps.
Can I add custom maps?
Yes. Upload custom map files to the packages/maps/servermaps folder via SFTP or the file manager, then use their names without extension in maprot.cfg. A non-standard map that is not in that folder will not start if it is in the rotation, so double-check the file name and location.
How do I become admin on my server?
Set an admin password with the -x option in servercmdline.txt, or in config/serverpwd.cfg if you need several. In game, type /setadmin 1 yourpassword to become admin and unlock map, mode and player management in the menu. Use the -P option to decide which votes are admin-only.
How long does setup take?
Installation starts automatically as soon as your payment is confirmed, and because the AssaultCube files are tiny, your server is ready shortly after. You can then edit your auth key and maprot file and start the server right away.
How do players connect to my server?
If the server is on the public list, players join by double-clicking it in the multiplayer menu. To connect directly, they type /connect IP port in the console, adding the password at the end for a passworded server. The server uses two UDP ports: if the game port is X, the info port is X+1, with 28763 and 28764 as defaults.
Are backups and DDoS protection included?
Yes. Your server is backed up automatically, and you can take a manual backup from the panel before making big changes to servercmdline.txt or maprot.cfg. Free DDoS protection comes with every plan, and together with the IP and nickname blacklists it protects your server at both the network and game level.
Will I ever need to upgrade my plan?
Most likely not for AssaultCube. You can move to a higher plan whenever you want, but with a 16-player cap and a server that uses so few resources, extra RAM or cores make no difference. Bronze 4GB will stay enough for this game over the long run.
