An Urban Terror server does not need big hardware; it needs the right settings and a fast core.
The ioquake3 server runs on one core, and the Ryzen 9 9950X helps keep server frames steady in rounds decided by headshots and wall jumps.
Edit server.cfg and mapcycle.txt through the file manager or SFTP and set values like sv_hostname, sv_maxclients, g_gametype and g_gear yourself.
Upload community maps as .pk3 files into q3ut4. NVMe storage speeds up map changes, and the disk easily holds a large map archive.
With the password set in rconPassword, change maps, kick players and update settings from in game or rcon tools without restarting the server.
Small but passionate Urban Terror communities get attacked too. DDoS protection is added to every plan at no cost, with nothing for you to configure.
For port, config or map download problems, get help through tickets, Discord, WhatsApp, phone or live chat at any hour.
An Urban Terror server from TheCrewHost costs from ₺240.00 (about $6.00) per month and installs automatically after payment on a Ryzen 9 9950X with DDR5 memory and NVMe storage in İstanbul. Urban Terror is FrozenSand's free tactical shooter built on the open-source ioquake3 engine, mixing realism with an unusual freedom of movement, and its current stable release is 4.3.4. You get full access to server.cfg and mapcycle.txt in the q3ut4 folder, choose the mode with g_gametype and manage the server remotely over rcon. Upload custom maps as .pk3 files and switch on g_matchmode for clan matches.
Urban Terror runs on ioquake3, the open-source continuation of the Quake III Arena engine, and FrozenSand distributes it for free. The current stable release is 4.3.4, and the team is also working on a full remake built on Unreal Engine 5. Today, nearly every active community server runs version 4.3.
The game mode is set with g_gametype. The most popular are Team Survivor at 4 (round based, and once you die you spectate until the round ends), Capture the Flag at 7 and Bomb at 8. Free For All, Team Deathmatch, Last Man Standing, Follow the Leader, Capture and Hold, Freeze Tag and Gun Game are available as well.
Jump servers are a culture of their own in Urban Terror. In Jump mode, set with 9, the goal is not to shoot anyone but to finish demanding courses using wall jumps and other movement tricks. Clan matches, public TS servers and jump maps attract different crowds, so deciding your server's identity up front makes it much easier to gather players.
To be honest, Urban Terror is a very light server by today's standards. The ioquake3 engine uses little memory and its game loop runs on one core, so the Bronze plan with 4 GB comfortably carries a typical 12 to 24 player server, and even a busier public one.
What really makes a difference is single-core speed and network quality. Hit detection and movement physics are precise in Urban Terror, so the server has to process its frames on a steady rhythm. The Ryzen 9 9950X gives you a generous ceiling here, and the İstanbul location helps keep latency low for players connecting from Türkiye.
Storage is not a worry either: the game's server files and a large custom map archive use a small fraction of 50 GB. The upper plans are not needed for a single Urban Terror server; starting on Bronze is both sensible and sufficient for this game. If your needs change, you can upgrade from the panel whenever you like.
An Urban Terror server's settings come together in server.cfg inside the q3ut4 folder. sv_hostname sets the server name (color codes included), sv_maxclients the total slot count, and g_motd and sv_joinmessage the messages players see on joining. For a private server use g_password, and for slots reserved for admins use sv_privateClients with sv_privatePassword.
The settings that shape gameplay most are g_gametype, g_friendlyfire and g_gear. With g_gear you can ban specific weapons and equipment, for example to run a fun server with nothing but pistols and knives. g_mapcycle points to the map rotation file, and in mapcycle.txt you simply list map names one per line. g_allowvote controls what players can call votes on.
For clan matches, g_matchmode 1 enables the ready-up system, timeouts and match-focused behavior. FrozenSand's account-based auth system is switched on with auth_enable and helps verify player identities. Give rconPassword a strong value; a weak rcon password is the shortest route to someone else taking over your server.
Urban Terror maps come as .pk3 files. To add a new map, upload the .pk3 into the q3ut4 folder over SFTP and add the map's name to mapcycle.txt. The map is called by its own internal name, not the file name of the package, and mixing those up is a classic mistake.
Players who lack a map can only fetch it if sv_allowdownload is set to 1. The default in-game download is slow, so many servers point sv_dlURL to an HTTP address hosting their maps, letting players pull files far faster. A web hosting plan is a handy place to keep those files.
On the admin side, many communities use bots that talk to the server over rcon. Spunky Bot, for example, reads the server's games.log to track player stats and provide levelled admin commands, and it needs logging settings such as g_logsync switched on. If you plan to run a bot like that, work out where it will run and how it will reach the logs before you start.
Urban Terror players find servers through the game's own server browser. Once your server reports to the master list, players see its name on the Internet tab and can add it to favorites for one-click visits later.
To connect directly, they open the console in game and type /connect followed by the IP and port shown in your panel. Urban Terror's default port is 27960, but on TheCrewHost the port assigned to your server in the panel is the one to use. For private sessions such as clan practice, set a password with g_password and share it only with your team.
Players need the same game version as the server. Since almost every community server runs 4.3, telling someone on an older build to update solves most connection problems. If players see missing map warnings when joining, double-check that your sv_dlURL setting is correct.
Urban Terror is so light that Bronze is more than enough for a typical 12 to 24 player server and a large map archive.
Once payment clears, the server installs automatically, and the console at gamepanel.hostingmerkezi.net shows it loading the first map and listening on its port.
Set sv_hostname, sv_maxclients, g_gametype, g_friendlyfire and rconPassword; for a clan server, also go through g_matchmode and auth_enable.
Drop custom .pk3 files into q3ut4 over SFTP, add the map names to mapcycle.txt and define an sv_dlURL address for fast downloads.
Players find you in the server browser or type /connect with your IP and port. Post the address in your Discord so regulars can save it.
