Why TheCrewHost for Team Fortress 2?

Features picked around what TF2 community server owners spend their time on.

A fast core for 66 tick

TF2 servers run at a fixed 66 tick on a mostly single-threaded loop. The Ryzen 9 9950X leaves headroom to hold that tick through chaotic 24 to 32 player Payload finales.

SourceMod and Metamod access

Full SFTP access to tf/addons lets you install Metamod:Source, SourceMod and the plugins that MGE, trade or jump servers depend on.

server.cfg and mapcycle control

Set hostname, rcon_password, sv_pure, mp_timelimit and bot options in tf/cfg/server.cfg, and define your rotation in mapcycle.txt.

NVMe for custom maps

Community maps and SourceTV demos fill disks fast. NVMe storage speeds up map changes, and disks from 50 GB leave room for wide rotations.

Free DDoS protection

Popular trade and MGE servers are frequent targets. DDoS protection is free on every plan and aims to filter attack traffic before it reaches your players.

Team Fortress 2 server hosting at TheCrewHost starts at ₺240.00 (about $6.00) per month, running Valve's official TF2 dedicated server on a Ryzen 9 9950X with DDR5 memory and NVMe storage in İstanbul. Casual matchmaking happens on Valve's own machines, while community servers are where players set their own rules: custom map rotations, trade and jump servers, MGE practice or Mann vs. Machine missions. You get full access to tf/cfg/server.cfg and the addons folder, so you can install Metamod:Source and SourceMod and upload plugins over SFTP. Looking for four-team modes and the Civilian class? See our Team Fortress 2 Classic page.

Which modes and community types can you run on a TF2 server?

Every official Team Fortress 2 mode runs on a community server: Payload and Payload Race, Control Points, King of the Hill, Capture the Flag, Arena, Player Destruction, Special Delivery, Mannpower and PASS Time. The map prefix (pl_, cp_, koth_, ctf_) decides the mode, so you either mix prefixes in your rotation or focus on a single mode.

The real color of TF2's community scene comes from SourceMod. MGE servers offer 1v1 duel practice, jump servers run dedicated maps for Soldier and Demoman rocket and sticky jumping, and trade servers are social hubs for swapping items. Versus Saxton Hale, Prop Hunt and similar community modes are installed through plugins as well.

Mann vs. Machine also works on community servers, with a six-player team defending against waves of robots. As for which TF2 to pick: this page is the right place for Valve's current TF2. If you want four-team game modes, the Civilian class and VIP mode, look at our page for Team Fortress 2 Classified, formerly TF2 Classic, which is released on Steam as a separate game.

How much RAM does a TF2 server need at 24, 32 and 100 players?

A TF2 server defaults to 24 players, and most community servers run somewhere between 24 and 32. In that range, the Bronze plan with 4 GB is enough for a vanilla or lightly modded SourceMod setup. Plugin-heavy trade or jump servers are more comfortable on Silver.

In 2023 Valve added the -unrestricted_maxplayers launch option, allowing servers of up to 100 players, while stating clearly that the feature is unsupported and not recommended. If you want to try a 100-player event, the bottleneck is single-core speed rather than memory; Gold or Platinum is reasonable for that experiment, but expect results to vary a lot with maps and plugins. Our support team can help if you need a launch parameter changed.

Source servers that run for long stretches without a restart can see memory use creep up, so many communities restart once a day during quiet hours. On the storage side, the TF2 server files and custom maps fit comfortably within Bronze's 50 GB.

How do you set up SourceMod, Workshop maps and FastDL?

Metamod:Source and SourceMod are the foundation of TF2's plugin ecosystem. Extract both archives into the tf folder over SFTP and a tf/addons directory appears; plugin .smx files go in addons/sourcemod/plugins and their config files in cfg/sourcemod. Add yourself and your staff to addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.ini with Steam IDs and permission flags.

TF2 updates occasionally break SourceMod's gamedata. If some plugins stop working after a big Valve update, installing the latest SourceMod build usually fixes it, which is why backing up the addons folder before updates is a good habit.

Custom maps come in two flavors. Steam Workshop maps can be pulled onto your server by their workshop IDs and added to your rotation. For maps outside the Workshop, players have to download the file from the server, and the default method is slow. Define a FastDL address with sv_downloadurl and keep bz2-compressed copies of your maps on a web server, and connection times drop noticeably.

server.cfg, GSLT and the core admin settings

Your TF2 server's identity lives in tf/cfg/server.cfg. hostname sets the server name, rcon_password the remote console password, and sv_password a private server password. sv_pure 1 limits players' ability to gain an edge by modifying game files and is the usual choice for public servers. mp_timelimit and mp_maxrounds control map length, and tf_bot_quota decides how many bots play while the server is empty.

Using a Game Server Login Token (GSLT) is recommended for community servers. Create the token on Steam's game server account management page using app ID 440, the game itself, not the dedicated server's 232250, and apply it with sv_setsteamaccount. That gives your server a persistent identity on Steam.

The map rotation lives in mapcycle.txt. Some values, such as player slots, are read only when the server starts, so you need a restart after changing them. Take a panel backup before experimenting and rolling back takes minutes.

Tips for competitive matches and Mann vs. Machine

Competitive TF2 is played in 6v6 and Highlander (9v9) formats using config packs published by leagues such as ETF2L and RGL. Those configs switch on tournament mode with mp_tournament 1, disable random crits with tf_weapon_criticals 0 and set class limits. To record matches, enable SourceTV with tv_enable and keep demos on the server; they take up disk space, so download old ones over SFTP and delete them regularly.

On a Mann vs. Machine server, a team of six defends against robot waves. Because robots also occupy player slots, MvM servers are usually started with 32 slots, and with many robot AIs running at once the CPU load is higher than on an ordinary Payload server. Missions are defined by mvm_ maps and the mission files tied to them.

When performance drops, suspect plugins first: a single SourceMod plugin doing heavy work every tick can cost a 32-player server its tick rate. Disabling plugins one at a time is the fastest way to find the culprit.

How to Set Up a Team Fortress 2 Server

  1. 1

Pick a plan for your kind of community

Start on Bronze for a 24 to 32 player vanilla or lightly modded server, Silver for a plugin-loaded trade or jump server, and Gold for MvM.

  2. 2

Let the install finish and open the panel

After payment the TF2 dedicated server installs itself, and the console at gamepanel.hostingmerkezi.net shows the first map loading.

  3. 3

    Configure server.cfg and your GSLT

Fill in hostname, rcon_password and sv_pure, apply a GSLT created under app ID 440 with sv_setsteamaccount, and prepare your mapcycle.txt rotation.

  4. 4

    Install Metamod, SourceMod and plugins

Extract the archives into the tf folder over SFTP, add yourself to admins_simple.ini, upload plugins to addons/sourcemod/plugins and restart the server.

  5. 5

Get players to favorite your server

Players search the community server browser or type connect with your IP and port in the console. Share the address on Discord and ask them to add it to favorites.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most common questions before opening your own TF2 server.

How much does Team Fortress 2 server hosting cost?
The entry plan is Bronze: 4 GB of DDR5 memory, a Ryzen 9 9950X and NVMe storage from ₺240.00 a month (about $6.00). There are 7 plans in total, topping out at 32 GB. Because the entry plan already handles a standard 24 to 32 player community server, most TF2 owners never need the upper tiers.
Which plan fits which player count?
Bronze is enough for a 24 to 32 player vanilla or lightly modded SourceMod server. We suggest Silver for plugin-heavy trade, jump or MGE servers, and Gold for Mann vs. Machine or a large custom map rotation. Platinum can work for 100-player test events, but Valve does not support that mode.
Can I install SourceMod plugins?
Yes. Extract the Metamod:Source and SourceMod archives into the tf folder over SFTP and upload plugin .smx files to addons/sourcemod/plugins. Grant admin rights in admins_simple.ini using Steam IDs and flags. After major TF2 updates, you may need to update SourceMod as well.
What is a GSLT and do I need one?
A GSLT is a game server login token that gives your server a persistent identity on Steam, and it is recommended for community servers. Create it on Steam's game server account management page with app ID 440, then apply it in server.cfg with sv_setsteamaccount. Tokens made under the dedicated server's 232250 ID do not work.
How is TF2 different from a Team Fortress 2 Classic server?
This page is for Valve's current Team Fortress 2. Team Fortress 2 Classic is now released on Steam as a separate game called Team Fortress 2 Classified, with different content such as four-team modes, the Civilian class and VIP mode. Choose the plan based on which game your players meet in.
How long does setup take?
Once your payment is confirmed, the TF2 dedicated server starts installing automatically. When the files are in place, the server boots in the panel and you can watch it load the first map in the console. From there you can edit server.cfg and add SourceMod and your plugins.
How do players connect to my server?
Most players find community servers through TF2's server browser, so a recognizable hostname helps. Direct joins work too: open the console, type connect and paste the IP:port from your panel. Ask regulars to favorite the server, and use sv_password for private matches.
How should I handle backups and updates?
Automatic backups run in the background, and a manual snapshot from the panel takes seconds. Make one before every major Valve patch, because updates occasionally break SourceMod gamedata; restoring addons and cfg keeps plugins working while you wait for a fix. Do not postpone the game update itself, since mismatched versions lock players out.
Is DDoS protection included, and can I move to a bigger plan?
Yes. Trade and MGE servers are common targets, and every TF2 plan filters DDoS traffic at no extra cost. Moving into heavier territory like MvM? Upgrade at any time and your SourceMod plugins, maps and cfg files come along.
