Why TheCrewHost for SuperTuxKart?

What you need for a kart racing server to share with friends, family or a classroom.

Every line of config.xml

Server name, game mode, difficulty, maximum players, private password, message of the day, track voting and ping rules are all managed from one XML file.

Six game modes on one server

Choose between classic race, time trial, grand prix, soccer, free-for-all battle and capture the flag, and set difficulty anywhere from beginner to SuperTux.

An ownerless lobby that runs itself

With owner-less on, nobody has to host the lobby; once enough players gather the countdown ends and the game starts automatically, day and night.

Ping, idle and password rules

max-ping, kick-high-ping-players and kick-idle-player-seconds handle laggy or idle players, and a private password limits the server to people you know.

A light game on strong hardware

STK's server uses very few resources. The Ryzen 9 9950X and NVMe SSD keep a single core relaxed even in a full lobby and load tracks quickly.

Help around the clock

If players cannot connect or a config.xml setting will not stick, write to us by ticket, Discord or WhatsApp, or call and chat live, at any hour.

TheCrewHost hosts SuperTuxKart servers from ₺240.00 per month ($6.00), keeping STK's headless server build online around the clock on Ryzen 9 9950X hardware in Istanbul. SuperTuxKart is a free, open-source kart racer, and players on Windows, Linux, macOS and Android can meet on the same server. In config.xml you choose the game mode, difficulty, player limit, track voting, ping rules and whether the lobby runs without an owner. Players connect through the game's server address screen with your IP and port. One honest note: STK is extremely light, and even our smallest plan is far more than this game needs.

What can you play on a SuperTuxKart server?

SuperTuxKart is a free kart racer starring Tux and other mascots of the open-source world. For online play, the developers recommend a server build compiled without a graphical interface and optimized for size and memory use, and that is how your server runs.

A server focuses on one game mode, which you pick with server-mode in config.xml. In classic race, players compete on a track chosen by vote; time trial removes items so only clean laps count. Grand prix runs several tracks back to back, but in that mode players cannot wait in the lobby and join an ongoing game. In soccer two teams try to push the ball into the opposing goal, free-for-all battle rewards whoever lands the most hits, and in capture the flag teams carry the enemy flag back to their own base.

There are four difficulty levels: beginner, intermediate, expert and the fastest, SuperTux. Beginner is ideal for a family server where kids play, while a competitive group of friends will prefer expert or SuperTux.

How much hardware does SuperTuxKart need?

Very little. STK's own networking documentation says an 8-player game on a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ uses about 60 percent of one CPU core and around 60 MB of memory, even on heavy tracks. A single Ryzen 9 9950X core is far beyond that.

So let us be clear: even the Bronze plan with 4 GB of memory is much larger than SuperTuxKart needs, and it is the only plan we recommend for this game. Higher tiers add nothing to performance; the memory sits empty and the extra cores go unused. What you should think about when choosing is not RAM but how far your players are from the server.

The developers also warn about player count: setting server-max-players above 8 can degrade performance. The reason is the game's network design rather than hardware, since every player's state is sent to everyone else. If your community is large, balanced 8-player games work better than one huge lobby. Our Istanbul datacenter gives players from Türkiye and nearby regions a short route, which makes bumps and item hits feel fairer in a kart race.

Which config.xml settings matter most?

The safe way to change settings is to stop the server, edit config.xml and start it again. server-name is the name players see, private-server-password is the password needed to join, and motd is the message of the day shown in the lobby.

With track-voting on, players vote for the next track; with it off, the server picks at random, and voting-timeout is the time allowed for voting and kart selection. When owner-less is enabled, no lobby owner starts games or kicks players: once min-start-game-players have gathered, the start-game-counter runs down and the game begins on its own. That pair is ideal for a 24/7 server nobody has to babysit. auto-end finishes a race some time after the first player crosses the line, so stragglers do not hold everyone up.

For connection quality, max-ping, jitter-tolerance, kick-high-ping-players and high-ping-workaround work together, and the developers recommend the defaults in most cases. kick-idle-player-seconds removes inactive players. With live-spectate on, players can join or spectate an ongoing game in soccer, free-for-all and capture the flag. official-tracks-threshold defaults to 0.7; raise it too far and players on the Android version, which lacks some official tracks, cannot join.

LAN or WAN: how do players find your server?

An STK server can run in two ways, and the difference decides how players find you. In LAN mode the server needs no account. Players connect directly by typing the server's public IP address and port into the server address screen of the online menu; STK's default port is 2759, but on a hosted server you should share the port shown in your panel.

In WAN mode the server appears on STK's online server list and players find you there. That requires a free STK online account; the account details are saved on the server once with the --init-user command, and wan-server is switched on in config.xml. WAN servers validate players through their STK accounts by default. The developers require servers that stay on 24/7 to be directly reachable, and a server in a datacenter already meets that condition. If you want your server moved onto the public list, talk to our support team.

Whichever mode you pick, the experience is the same once players are in: karts are chosen in the lobby, a track is voted and the race begins.

How do you manage the server and fix common problems?

The server runs with its network console, so you can send commands from the panel's console screen; quit shuts the server down cleanly. With enable-console on, you can also kick and ban players from the console. For a persistent ban list, player reports and statistics, STK has SQLite-based server management, but that requires a server built with SQLite support and database tables you create by hand.

The most common problem is players connecting with the wrong port, so make sure the address you share uses the port assigned in your panel. The second is missing content: if a player's game has too few of the server's official karts, official-karts-threshold refuses the join. If Android players cannot get in, look at official-tracks-threshold.

Taking a manual backup in the panel before a big config.xml change is a good habit. The file is small, but it brings a working setup back in seconds. A large gap between the server's game version and the players' version can cause connection issues, so if trouble starts after an update, write to our support team.

How to Set Up a SuperTuxKart Server

  1. 1

    Take the smallest plan, Bronze

STK is extremely light; the 4 GB Bronze plan is far above this game's needs and the only plan we recommend for it.

  2. 2

    Let the install finish

Once your payment is confirmed the server installs itself. The first install can take a little longer because it includes the game's track and kart data.

  3. 3

Set mode, difficulty and player limit

Stop the server, edit server-mode, server-difficulty, server-max-players and server-name in config.xml, then start it again.

  4. 4

    Configure the lobby rules

For a 24/7 server, enable owner-less and track-voting, and choose min-start-game-players and start-game-counter to suit your player count.

  5. 5

Add a password and welcome message

Fill in private-server-password if only people you know should join, and write a lobby greeting in motd.

  6. 6

Share the address and start racing

Players connect by typing your IP address and the port shown in your panel into the server address screen of the online menu.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions from families, schools and friend groups planning a kart racing server.

How much should I budget for a SuperTuxKart server?
Bronze, the only plan we recommend for SuperTuxKart, costs ₺240.00 per month ($6.00). Its 4 GB of memory dwarfs the few tens of megabytes an 8-player game uses. We offer 7 plans, but in STK the higher ones add neither player capacity nor smoothness, and free DDoS protection is standard on all of them.
Is there a sensible player limit for an STK server?
Bronze is enough in every case. The STK developers note that raising server-max-players above 8 can degrade performance, because of the network design rather than hardware. For large communities, balanced 8-player games play most smoothly.
Which game modes can I run?
With server-mode in config.xml you choose between classic race, time trial, grand prix, soccer, free-for-all battle and capture the flag. server-difficulty sets one of four levels, from beginner up to SuperTux. Keep in mind that in grand prix, players cannot join a game already in progress.
Can Android players join my server?
Yes, STK multiplayer is cross-platform. The Android version leaves out some official tracks, though, which is why official-tracks-threshold defaults to 0.7. Raise it too high and Android players will be locked out. For family and school servers we recommend keeping the default.
How long does setup take?
The STK server installs itself after payment, but the first install is slower than for most games because it pulls in all the track and kart data. When it finishes, edit config.xml and start the server; later restarts are much quicker.
How do kart racers reach my server?
By entering your server's IP address and the port shown in your panel on the server address screen of the online menu, with no account needed. Appearing on STK's public online list requires WAN mode and a free STK account; talk to our support team if you want that.
Can the server run without anyone managing the lobby?
Yes, that is exactly what owner-less is for. With it on, the lobby has no owner: once min-start-game-players have gathered, the start-game-counter runs and the game starts by itself. track-voting lets players choose tracks, and auto-end wraps up races without making everyone wait for the last kart.
Is config.xml backed up, and is the server protected?
Yes on both counts. config.xml, the one file that really matters in STK, is included in the automatic backups, and a manual backup in the panel before a big change is a good habit. Free DDoS protection is on for every plan and needs no setup, so a public kart server stays reachable.
Can I upgrade my plan later?
You can switch to a higher plan at any time, though for SuperTuxKart we advise against it: the server runs on a single core with very little memory, so an upgrade adds nothing to the game. If another game needs more resources, check the plan guide on that game's page.
