Why TheCrewHost for Stormworks: Build and Rescue?

Built to carry block-built vehicle physics, busy rescue operations and heavily customized careers.

The Whole server_config.xml

Every rule is an attribute on one XML line: max_players, password, day_length, vehicle_damage, infinite_fuel, starting_currency, despawn_on_leave and dozens more, edited straight in the file manager.

Admins, Whitelist and Blacklist

List Steam64 IDs under admins, authorized, whitelist and blacklist to decide who runs the server, who sits in the authorized tier and who never gets in.

DLC and Mission Playlists

dlc_weapons, dlc_arid and dlc_space switch Search and Destroy, Industrial Frontier and Space content on or off, while the playlists list controls AI traffic, cargo jobs and natural disasters.

Windows Server Under Wine

Geometa only builds server64.exe for Windows; it runs under Wine with a virtual display on Linux, so you get the real dedicated server without paying for a Windows license.

Physics-Heavy Vehicles

Every boat, helicopter and train is a physics object made of hundreds or thousands of blocks, and fast Ryzen 9 9950X cores keep server TPS steadier when players spawn big builds.

Saves and Backups

The world saves under the save_name set in server_config.xml; take a panel backup of the server_data folder before big changes, while automatic backups keep running on schedule.

Your own Stormworks: Build and Rescue server costs ₺240.00 ($6.00) per month on the smallest of 7 plans, which range from 4 GB to 32 GB and all run on a Ryzen 9 9950X with DDR5 memory and NVMe storage. Geometa ships the dedicated server as a Windows program, server64.exe, so it runs under Wine and reads everything from server_config.xml: name, password, player cap, day and night length, damage and money rules, DLC content, and the admin, whitelist and blacklist entries keyed to Steam64 IDs. Hosted in İstanbul, it keeps vehicle physics responsive for crews in Türkiye and nearby regions.

What does a Stormworks dedicated server run?

Stormworks: Build and Rescue is Geometa's open-ocean vehicle building and rescue game. You design boats, helicopters, planes, submarines and trains block by block in the workbench, wire up electrical, fuel and fluid systems, and automate them with microcontrollers and even Lua scripts. Career mode pays you for rescues, firefighting and cargo jobs, unlocking new islands and parts, while storms, lightning and natural disasters make every shift harder.

A dedicated server makes that world persistent. Players join whenever they like, spawn their own vehicles and work from a shared base or separate islands. The old problem of everyone getting kicked when the host shuts down their PC goes away, and the crew picks up where it left off the next evening.

On the server side you can also switch on Search and Destroy's weapons, Industrial Frontier's arid island with its mining and railway content, or the Space DLC. Whether you build a rescue roleplay community, a creative build sandbox or an armed naval arena comes down entirely to server_config.xml.

What drives RAM and CPU use on a Stormworks server?

4 GB is a fair start for a small crew; an empty Stormworks server opens on modest memory, and the Wine layer adds a little on top. What really grows memory is the number and size of spawned vehicles, the regions loaded as players spread across the map, AI vehicles generated by mission playlists, and any DLC islands you enable.

On the CPU side, physics decides everything. A multi-deck ship with thousands of blocks or a long train is a heavy object the server recalculates every step, and when several large vehicles move at once, TPS drops. For Stormworks, the speed of each core counts for more than how many cores you have.

One quirk to know: the Stormworks console can misreport TPS and show a steady 60–64 regardless. To see the real figure, join the server and press the backquote (`) key. Bronze 4GB suits two to four players with small vehicles, Gold 8GB mid-size groups with DLC content on, and Emerald 16GB crowded servers full of big ships. Xtreme 32GB goes beyond what most Stormworks servers need.

Which server_config.xml settings matter most?

Every Stormworks server setting lives in server_config.xml in the server_data folder, as attributes of the server_data element. The server reads this file at launch, so stop it before editing and start it again once saved. name is the server list name, password locks entry and max_players sets the cap, while seed fixes the world seed and save_name names the save.

The port attribute sets the first port; Stormworks uses the next port number as well, so the two must be consecutive. The settings that shape gameplay most: day_length and night_length set the day cycle, starting_currency the opening funds, infinite_resources, infinite_fuel and infinite_batteries the resource limits, and vehicle_damage, player_damage and npc_damage the damage rules.

World hazards live here too: sea_monsters, aggressive_animals and lightning set the dangers, while unlock_all_islands and base_island define starting conditions. With despawn_on_leave on, a player's vehicles are removed when they log off, which on busy servers stops abandoned megaships from wasting physics time. map_show_players and show_name_plates are worth toggling depending on whether you run a cooperative or competitive server.

How do admins, whitelists and playlists work?

server_config.xml contains four lists: admins, authorized, whitelist and blacklist. You add players to each by Steam64 ID, as the value attribute of an id tag. Players under admins run the server, the authorized list is a separate permission tier for players you trust, IDs in the blacklist cannot join at all, and the whitelist restricts entry to the IDs it contains. The lists are read at startup, so restart after editing them.

The playlists section lists the mission and addon packs that decide what runs in the world. A default install includes packs under rom/data/missions: default_ai for AI vehicles, default_cargo for cargo, default_natural_disasters for disasters, and mission sets for forest fires, oil surveys and fish surveys. Removing a line removes that content from the world.

Custom Lua addons follow the same logic: upload the addon folder over SFTP, then add a path line under playlists pointing to it. Backing up before you test a new addon keeps an unexpected script from wrecking your career save.

How do players join, and what are the common gotchas?

Players find your server in the server list of Stormworks' multiplayer menu by searching the name you set in server_config.xml, then enter the password to join. Both consecutive ports must be reachable; if one is blocked, the server can appear in the list and still fail to connect. After every Stormworks patch the server needs the same update, otherwise players on the new version are refused.

One significant change to know about: Geometa now ships the dedicated server files as part of the base game package. Downloading or updating them through SteamCMD therefore requires logging in with a Steam account that owns Stormworks. If Steam credentials are requested during install or an update, that is why, and our support team will walk you through the step.

When chasing performance problems, check the real in-game TPS first, because the console figure can mislead. Abandoned large vehicles are the most common culprit, and despawn_on_leave handles that automatically. The İstanbul location means players in Türkiye do not feel lag while flying a helicopter low over the waves or docking in a storm.

How to Set Up a Stormworks: Build and Rescue Server

  1. 1

Pick a plan for your crew and vehicles

Bronze 4GB covers two to four players with small vehicles; choose Gold 8GB for DLC islands and mid-size ships, and Emerald 16GB for busy servers full of big ships.

  2. 2

Check out and let the install start

Setup begins automatically after payment; because the server files now require a Steam account that owns the game, our support team helps if that step asks for it.

  3. 3

    Set the basics in server_config.xml

Stop the server and edit name, password, max_players, day_length and the damage rules, remembering that port is the first of two consecutive ports.

  4. 4

Add yourself to the admin list

Write your Steam64 ID as an id line under admins; put trusted players under authorized and unwanted ones under blacklist.

  5. 5

    Choose DLC content and playlists

Set dlc_weapons, dlc_arid and dlc_space to match the content your crew wants, and remove mission sets you do not want from the playlists list.

  6. 6

Start the server and call your crew

Wait for the console to confirm the Steam connection, then share the server name and password; players find it in the multiplayer list and join.

Frequently Asked Questions

What people ask when opening a Stormworks server: plans, addons, permissions and install details.

How much does Stormworks server hosting cost?
Stormworks hosting costs ₺240.00 a month ($6.00) on Bronze 4GB, the smallest of 7 plans in the 4 GB–32 GB range, all on a Ryzen 9 9950X with DDR5 and NVMe storage. Higher tiers add memory, vCores and disk, so a crew playing with small vehicles can start small and upgrade as their ships grow.
How much RAM does a Stormworks server need for big ships?
Two to four players flying small helicopters and boats fit on Bronze 4GB. For a mission-driven career and more players we suggest Silver 6GB, and Gold 8GB for mid-size groups with DLC islands on. On busy servers where several huge ships move at once, Emerald 16GB is the comfortable choice.
Can I use custom addons and Lua scripts?
Yes. Upload the Lua addon folder over SFTP and add a path line pointing to it in the playlists section of server_config.xml. You can remove default mission packs from the same list. Taking a backup before testing a new addon keeps your career save safe.
How do I add admins by Steam64 ID?
Add your Steam64 ID as an id line under the admins section of server_config.xml and restart the server. Use the authorized list for trusted players and the blacklist for unwanted ones, and fill in the whitelist if you want to open the server only to specific players.
Why might the install ask for a Steam account?
Geometa now distributes the dedicated server files with the base game package, so downloading or updating them through SteamCMD requires logging in with a Steam account that owns Stormworks. If that is requested during install or an update, that is the reason, and our support team helps step by step.
How do players find my Stormworks server?
Players search for your server's name, the name value in server_config.xml, in the server list of Stormworks' multiplayer menu and enter the password. The server uses two consecutive ports, so both must be open. Make sure the server and game versions match.
How long does setup take?
Installation kicks off by itself when your payment goes through. Because the server is a Windows program running under Wine, the first boot can take a little longer; when the console shows the Steam connection is up, the server is ready. From there you edit server_config.xml and restart.
How is my career save backed up?
Automatic backups run regularly, and your world is saved under the save_name set in server_config.xml. Before testing a new addon, enabling a DLC or updating the game, a manual panel backup of the server_data folder lets you bring the world back quickly if something breaks.
Can an attack interrupt a rescue mission on my server?
Free DDoS protection on every plan is there to stop exactly that. A Stormworks server in the public list is an easy target, but attack traffic is filtered before it reaches your server, so a rescue in the middle of a storm is not cut short.
Can I upgrade my plan later?
Yes. Upgrading carries server_config.xml, your save and your addons over to the bigger plan as they are. With Stormworks, the need usually shows up when players start building large ships and trains or when DLC islands are switched on.
