Why TheCrewHost for Squad?

Squad is one of the most demanding shooters to host, and these plans are built around that reality.

Storage sized for a 90 GB game

Squad's server files approach 90 GB. Plans start at 100 GB of NVMe storage and reach 200 GB for modded servers, and fast disks keep map loads short.

CPU for 100-player fights

In a 100-player round with vehicles, the main server loop leans on one core. The Ryzen 9 9950X's high clock speed and the 6 to 12 vCores on upper plans carry that load.

Direct ServerConfig editing

Edit Server.cfg, Admins.cfg, Rcon.cfg, LayerRotation.cfg, Motd.cfg and ServerMessages.cfg straight from the file manager or over SFTP.

Workshop mods

Upload Workshop mods fetched with SteamCMD into SquadGame/Plugins/Mods and add their layers to your rotation, with disk space that grows as you move up plans.

Remote control over RCON

Connect RCON tools with the password and port from Rcon.cfg, manage players remotely and hook up community bots such as SquadJS.

Free DDoS protection

Community servers are often targeted on event nights, so DDoS protection comes free with every plan and needs no extra configuration.

Squad server hosting at TheCrewHost starts at ₺530.00 (about $13.25) per month on the Platinum plan, which brings 10 GB of DDR5 memory and 100 GB of NVMe storage on a Ryzen 9 9950X in İstanbul. The server files alone approach 90 GB, so smaller plans are simply not offered for this game. You get full access to Server.cfg, Admins.cfg, layer rotations and the rest of ServerConfig, and you can upload Steam Workshop mods over SFTP. Your server runs as a community server outside Offworld's licensing program and is listed under the Custom Servers tab, which is exactly the setup clans use for training, events and modded matches.

What is the difference between licensed and unlicensed Squad servers?

Offworld Industries splits Squad servers into two groups. Licensed servers appear in the game's primary server browser tab, while unlicensed servers are listed under Custom Servers. A license is granted through an application on Offworld's licensing portal, and approval is never guaranteed.

The license terms are strict: at least 10 admins per server, active moderation during peak hours, and a server that is public and password-free at all times. Offworld's current policy also requires approved physical hardware and does not license servers running on virtual machines, VPS or VDS. For that reason, plan your TheCrewHost Squad server as a community server that lives in the Custom Servers tab.

That is not a limitation for most owners; it is the right tool for a long list of jobs. Clan and community training, password-protected practice sessions, tournament and event nights, Workshop-modded servers and friend groups playing by their own rules all run perfectly well on an unlicensed server. If your goal is a licensed server in the main browser, read Offworld's current requirements before you commit.

How much RAM and disk space does a Squad server need?

Squad's officially recommended minimum is 8 GB of RAM, and the server files alone approach 90 GB. That is why plans for this game start at Platinum with 10 GB; smaller tiers are not offered for Squad at all.

Platinum's 100 GB disk holds a vanilla install, but it leaves little room for large updates and mods. It is a solid starting point for training and event servers with 40 to 60 players. If you plan to reach 60 to 80 players or add a few light mods, Diamond is more comfortable. For a full 100-player server, Emerald with 6 vCores and 16 GB is the right call, and Xtreme's 200 GB disk suits large Workshop mod collections.

On the CPU side, single-core speed is what counts. The server's game loop processes the movement of 100 players, vehicle physics and ballistics at the same time, and when server FPS drops in a crowded round, players feel it as rubber-banding and delayed hits. The Ryzen 9 9950X's high clock speed makes a real difference here.

What does each file in the ServerConfig folder do?

Everything that defines your Squad server lives in SquadGame/ServerConfig. Server.cfg holds the core settings such as ServerName, MaxPlayers, NumReservedSlots and MapRotationMode. Set MapRotationMode to LayerList_Vote and players get to vote on the next layer at the end of each round.

LayerRotation.cfg and MapRotation.cfg hold your layer and map lists, and the rotation mode you pick decides which one is used. Admins.cfg stores permission groups and admins, Bans.cfg stores bans, Rcon.cfg holds the RCON password and port, Motd.cfg is the message players see on joining, and ServerMessages.cfg contains the broadcasts that cycle during a round. RemoteAdminListHosts.cfg lets you pull an admin list from a web address, which makes it easy to manage several servers from one list.

Ports are set through launch parameters. The defaults are 7787 for the game, 27165 for queries, 15000 for the beacon and 21114 for RCON, but on TheCrewHost the ports assigned to your server in the panel are the ones that apply. Copy any cfg file before editing it; a single bad line can stop the server from starting.

How do you set up admin permissions, RCON and SquadJS?

Permissions in Squad are granted in Admins.cfg in two steps. First you define a group, for example 'Group=Admin:changemap, balance, chat, kick, ban, cameraman, teamchange, canseeadminchat'. Then you attach a person to that group by Steam ID with 'Admin=76561198000000000:Admin'. A common trick is a separate group that holds only the reserve permission, used for supporters who get a reserved slot and nothing else.

Hand out permissions carefully. cameraman unlocks the admin spectator camera, forceteamchange moves players between teams, and manageserver and config touch the server's settings, so those are best kept with a small, trusted team.

RCON uses the password and port you set in Rcon.cfg and is the gateway for remote management tools. SquadJS, a favorite among community servers, sends commands over RCON and reads server logs to provide automated seeding messages, Discord notifications and stats. Running SquadJS on a separate VDS and pointing it at your logs over SFTP keeps that extra load off the game server.

How do you install Workshop mods and fill the server?

Squad mods come from the Steam Workshop. To install one server-side, you run 'workshop_download_item 393380 <mod ID>' in SteamCMD and copy the downloaded folder into SquadGame/Plugins/Mods; on TheCrewHost, uploading that folder over SFTP is all it takes. After refreshing the mod folder, add the mod's layers to your rotation file. Every mod eats disk space, and a few large ones can burn through Platinum's free space quickly.

When Squad updates, your mods need compatible versions as well. Players who do not have the same mod version cannot connect, so after a patch refresh both the mod folder on the server and your announcement.

The hardest part of a new server is getting the first players in. Squad communities call it seeding: you start on Seed layers with smaller battlefields while the population is low, then switch to the normal rotation as the server fills. Players find you by name in the Custom Servers tab, and pinning the name and a search keyword in your Discord makes the first days much easier.

How to Set Up a Squad Server

  1. 1

Choose a plan for your player target and mod plans

Start on Platinum for a 40 to 60 player training server, Emerald for a full 100-player server, or Xtreme with 200 GB of storage for a large mod collection.

  2. 2

Wait for the automatic install to complete

Installation starts on its own after payment. Once the nearly 90 GB of files have downloaded, you will see the server boot in the console at gamepanel.hostingmerkezi.net.

  3. 3

Set identity and rotation mode in Server.cfg

Enter ServerName, MaxPlayers and NumReservedSlots, pick the MapRotationMode you prefer and prepare your layer list in LayerRotation.cfg.

  4. 4

    Fill in Admins.cfg and Rcon.cfg

Add permission groups and admins by Steam ID, set a strong RCON password, then restart the server and test the permissions in game.

  5. 5

Open on Seed layers and announce on Discord

Put Seed layers at the top of the rotation for the first players, share the server name on Discord and tell players to search for it in the Custom Servers tab.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most common questions before renting a Squad server.

How much does Squad server hosting cost?
Squad servers start at ₺530.00 per month (about $13.25) on the Platinum plan with 10 GB of DDR5 memory and 100 GB of NVMe storage. We offer 4 plans for Squad, reaching up to 32 GB. Because the game files approach 90 GB, smaller plans are not listed for this game.
Which plan should I pick for my player count?
We recommend Platinum for training and event servers with 40 to 60 players, Diamond for 60 to 80 players with a few light mods, and Emerald with 6 vCores for a full 100-player server. For a large Workshop mod collection, disk space becomes the deciding factor, and Xtreme's 200 GB is built for that.
Will my server be licensed and show in the main browser?
No. A Squad server on these plans is an unlicensed community server listed in the Custom Servers tab. Offworld's current policy requires approved physical hardware for licensing and does not license servers on virtual machines, VPS or VDS. Unlicensed servers work perfectly well for training, events and modded play.
How do I install Workshop mods?
Download the mod with SteamCMD using 'workshop_download_item 393380 <mod ID>' and upload its folder into SquadGame/Plugins/Mods over SFTP. Then add the mod's layers to your rotation file. Players need the same mod version, so refresh your mods after every Squad update.
How do I give out admin rights and reserved slots?
In Admins.cfg, define a group such as 'Group=Admin:changemap,kick,ban,...' and attach people with 'Admin=SteamID64:Admin'. To give only a reserved slot, create a group containing just the reserve permission. The number of reserved slots comes from NumReservedSlots in Server.cfg.
How long does setup take?
Setup starts automatically once payment is confirmed. Because Squad's files are huge, the first download takes longer than it does for lighter games, and the server starts in the panel as soon as it finishes. After that, you only need to edit the ServerConfig files and restart.
How do players join my server?
Players open the Custom Servers tab in Squad's server browser and search for your server name. For a password-protected training session, share the password only with your team. Try the first connection yourself to confirm the game and query ports shown in your panel are working.
How do backups and updates work?
Automatic backups run without you lifting a finger, and the panel lets you snapshot the server on demand. Take one before touching Admins.cfg, your rotation files or SquadGame/Plugins/Mods. Squad patches are big downloads, so leaving free disk space on your plan helps an update complete cleanly instead of stalling halfway.
Is there DDoS protection, and can I scale up later?
Yes. Event nights are when community servers draw attacks, and every Squad plan includes free DDoS filtering from day one. Growing toward full 100-player rounds or a bigger mod collection? Upgrade whenever you like; ServerConfig, mods and settings carry over.
