Why TheCrewHost for RedM?

The file access, hardware and protection a western roleplay server needs to stay up and smooth.

server.cfg and resources Access

Edit sv_licenseKey, sv_maxclients, sv_enforceGameBuild and your ensure lines in the file manager, and push new scripts into their own subfolders under resources over SFTP.

Works with VORP and RSG

The Lua-based vorp_core and the QBCore-derived RSG Core both connect to a MySQL or MariaDB database through oxmysql. Framework resources go into their folders under resources.

CPU Built for Script Load

Most FXServer script work runs on the main thread, so one heavy loop affects everyone. The Ryzen 9 9950X's strong single-core performance shows when your resource list gets long.

NVMe Storage and Automatic Backups

A resources folder swollen with maps, models and audio loads quickly from NVMe. Server files are backed up automatically, and you can take manual backups before big updates.

DDoS Protection for Launch Night

Roleplay servers that climb the list can become targets. Free network-level protection filters malicious traffic and helps keep the server up at critical moments like launch night.

RedM server hosting at TheCrewHost starts at $8.63 per month (₺345.00), with 6 GB to 32 GB of RAM for running Cfx.re's FXServer-based RedM server for Red Dead Redemption 2. You install a roleplay framework such as VORP or RSG and manage server.cfg and the resources folder through the panel file manager or SFTP. To boot, the server needs a free license key generated at portal.cfx.re. Hosting in İstanbul keeps latency low for players in Türkiye and solid across Europe and the Middle East, and the Ryzen 9 9950X's single-core speed gives Lua scripts, most of which run on the main thread, plenty of room.

What can you build on a RedM server?

RedM is the multiplayer modification for the PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2, built by the Cfx.re team. It runs on the same FXServer platform as FiveM, and the Cfx.re team joined Rockstar Games in 2023. On the server side, the set gamename rdr3 line in server.cfg is what points that shared server software at RDR2.

Western roleplay is by far the most common use: a sheriff's office and outlaws, ranching and livestock, mining and hunting, saloon and general-store economies, stagecoaches and horse trading. These systems usually run as dozens of resources layered on top of a framework. You can also skip the framework entirely and run a lightweight freeroam or event server.

One thing to watch: scripts written for FiveM do not work on RedM as-is, because the two games expose different natives. RedM resources declare game 'rdr3' in their fxmanifest.lua, along with the RedM-specific rdr3_warning acknowledgement line. Before you buy or download a script, confirm it was written for RedM; adapting a FiveM version usually amounts to a substantial rewrite rather than a quick port.

VORP or RSG: which framework should you choose?

The two major roleplay frameworks on RedM are VORP and RSG, and both are open source. VORP Core is written in Lua, has been developed for a long time and comes with a broad family of vorp_ resources: inventory, characters, metabolism, menus and admin tools each ship as separate resources. It requires oxmysql, and vorp_core should sit near the top of your load order.

RSG Core is a RedM framework derived from QBCore and built on the ox_lib library. A team that has worked with QBCore on FiveM will find its structure familiar right away. RSG also has an official txAdmin recipe that makes installing the core resources in one go much easier.

The choice mostly comes down to your team's background and the scripts you want, because resources written for one framework do not run on the other without changes. Before you start, check which framework the job, inventory and economy scripts you need actually support. Switching frameworks later means migrating player data and resources, which is expensive, so settle the decision before launch.

What belongs in server.cfg, and where do you get a license key?

A RedM server will not start without a license key, which you generate at portal.cfx.re and place on the sv_licenseKey line in server.cfg. If the key is missing or invalid, the server refuses to boot and the console tells you so.

The core lines are: set gamename rdr3 to run the server for RDR2; endpoint_add_tcp and endpoint_add_udp to set the listening address and port (30120 by default); sv_hostname for the name shown in the server list; and sv_maxclients for the slot count. Some scripts need a specific game build, and a line such as sv_enforceGameBuild 1491 pins it; that value is only read at startup.

Cfx.re rules govern player counts: slot values above 32 require OneSync to be enabled. According to Cfx.re's documentation, OneSync is free up to 48 slots, and going beyond that requires one of the paid tiers on the Cfx.re Portal. Frameworks that use a database read the connection details through oxmysql from the set mysql_connection_string line. Order your ensure lines carefully: oxmysql first, then the framework core, then everything else.

How much RAM does a RedM server need?

Silver, with 6 GB of RAM, is a realistic starting point for a small western roleplay server running a framework and a mid-sized script set for up to 32 players. The resources you load matter more than player count: every extra script, map edit, custom model and sound file adds to server memory and to each player's first-join download.

For a busy server with OneSync enabled and 32 to 48 slots filled, Gold or Platinum leaves more comfortable headroom. Because slots beyond 48 require a paid Cfx.re tier, Diamond and above make sense for crowded, resource-heavy projects that have already taken that step.

On the CPU side, the bottleneck is usually a badly written script. A loop that walks every player on every tick, or a resource that hammers the database, will slow the server no matter how big the plan is. If the console shows hitch warnings, run profiler record 500 in the server console to capture a profile and see which resource is eating the time. The resources folder also grows over time, and pruning unused resources shortens load times as well.

How do administration, backups and updates work?

Day-to-day administration of a RedM server comes down to three things: permissions, the database and the server version. In VORP, you add admins by following the examples in server.cfg and in vorp_perms.cfg inside vorp_admin, and by setting the group column to admin for that player in the users and characters tables. RSG handles permissions through its own framework permission setup.

The database is the most important thing to back up, because characters, inventories, money and property all live there. Your server files are backed up automatically, but if the database is on a separate server you need to dump it regularly yourself. Before a major framework update, back up both files and database so you can always roll back.

When updating FXServer artifacts, the build Cfx.re marks as recommended is the safer pick, since the very latest build is not always tested against the frameworks. txAdmin is the web panel bundled with FXServer, used for scheduled restarts and recipe deployment. Ask our support team whether txAdmin can be used on your TheCrewHost server and whether it needs an extra port.

How to Set Up a RedM Server

  1. 1

Generate a license key at portal.cfx.re

Sign in to portal.cfx.re with your Cfx.re account and create a free license key for your server. A RedM server will not start without one.

  2. 2

Pick a plan that fits your framework

Choose Silver for a small VORP or RSG server, or Gold or Platinum if you are targeting 32 to 48 slots. Installation starts automatically after payment.

  3. 3

Add your key and core settings to server.cfg

Fill in sv_licenseKey, sv_hostname and sv_maxclients, and make sure set gamename rdr3 is present. Enable OneSync if you want more than 32 slots.

  4. 4

Prepare the database and wire up oxmysql

Import your framework's SQL files into a MySQL or MariaDB database and put the connection string on the set mysql_connection_string line. A TheCrewHost VDS can host the database.

  5. 5

Upload the framework and scripts, then start

Copy resources into the resources folder over SFTP, add ensure lines in the order oxmysql, framework core, other scripts, then start the server from the panel.

  6. 6

    Call your players into town

Players open the RedM client and find your server in the list, or open the F8 console and type connect followed by the IP:port from your panel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most from people launching a western roleplay server on RedM.

How much does RedM server hosting cost?
RedM plans start at $8.63 per month (₺345.00) for Silver, with 6 GB of RAM and 4 vCores, which is the realistic floor for a small framework-based roleplay server. There are 6 plans, all with the Ryzen 9 9950X, NVMe SSD storage, unlimited traffic, free DDoS protection and automatic backups. The Cfx.re license key is free; going past 48 slots costs extra on the Cfx.re side.
Which plan should I choose for RedM?
Silver is a solid start for a VORP or RSG server with up to 32 players. For servers with OneSync on that fill 32 to 48 slots, Gold or Platinum is the better fit. Memory is driven mainly by your script count, custom maps and models, so move up a tier as your resource list grows. Diamond and above are generally for projects going beyond 48 slots.
Can I install the VORP and RSG frameworks?
Yes. Both are open source; you upload their files to the resources folder over SFTP and add ensure lines to server.cfg. VORP needs oxmysql and a MySQL or MariaDB database, and vorp_core should load near the top. RSG uses ox_lib and has an official txAdmin recipe. With either one, remember to import the framework's SQL files into your database.
Do I need a Cfx.re license key, and does it cost anything?
Yes, every RedM server needs a license key, and you can generate one for free at portal.cfx.re. It goes on the sv_licenseKey line in server.cfg, and the server will not start if it is missing or wrong. Costs only come into play if you want more than the 48 slots that Cfx.re's documentation lists as free with OneSync, which requires a paid Cfx.re tier.
How quickly will my RedM server be ready?
FXServer installation starts automatically once your payment is confirmed, and the server appears in your panel shortly after. You then add your license key, upload a framework and connect the database. Moving an existing VORP or RSG setup takes anywhere from a few minutes to an hour depending on its size; if you are starting fresh, choosing scripts is what really takes time.
How do players connect to my RedM server?
Players need Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC and the RedM client. After launching RedM they can search for your server by name in the server list, or open the console with F8, type connect and enter the IP:port from your panel. On first join they download the maps and models your server streams, so the larger your resources, the longer that wait.
Will my FiveM scripts work on RedM?
Usually not. RedM and FiveM share the FXServer platform, but the games expose different natives, so scripts written for FiveM do not run on RedM directly. RedM resources carry game 'rdr3' and an rdr3_warning line in their fxmanifest.lua. Choosing resources written for VORP or RSG is far less work than porting FiveM scripts.
Are my RedM files and database backed up?
Your server files, meaning server.cfg and the resources folder, are backed up automatically. Characters, inventories and money live in the database, so if the database runs on a separate machine such as a VDS, schedule your own regular dumps. Before a framework update or a big script change, back up both files and database to stay safe.
Is my RedM server protected against DDoS attacks?
Yes, free DDoS protection is standard on every RedM plan and filters attack traffic at the network level. That matters because roleplay servers that announce a launch or climb the server list can attract attacks. On the server side, avoiding untrusted scripts and keeping admin permissions tight shrinks your attack surface further.
Can I upgrade my RedM plan as the community grows?
Yes, you can move to a higher plan at any time and keep your server.cfg, resources and backups. On RedM the push to upgrade usually comes from a longer script list, more custom maps and models, or buying a Cfx.re tier to go past 48 slots. If you see hitch warnings, find the offending resource with the profiler first; more RAM will not fix a bad script.
