GTAC ships as an empty sandbox. Here is the file access, scripting support and hardware you need to turn it into your own game mode.
servername, gamemode, maxplayers, password and game all live in server.xml, and command-line options such as -port or -maxplayers take priority over the values in that file.
Mix Lua, Squirrel and JavaScript files inside the same resource; each script entry in meta.xml sets the side it runs on with type and its language with the language attribute.
Set game to gta:iii, gta:vc, gta:sa or gta:iv to choose which title the server runs, and there is also a gta:eflc identifier for Episodes from Liberty City.
Server modules add MySQL, SQLite or ini support, called through a namespace such as module.mysql. For security, modules only run on the server and are never sent to clients.
Values like syncinterval, syncmethod and streamindistance let you tune how often the server syncs and how far away entities get streamed to players as your server fills up.
GTAC runs game sync over UDP and file downloads over TCP on the same port number, 22000 by default, and free DDoS protection filters attack traffic aimed at it.
GTA Connected server hosting at TheCrewHost starts at ₺240.00 per month (about $6.00), with 4 GB to 32 GB of RAM running the GTAC server on a Ryzen 9 9950X with NVMe SSD storage in Istanbul. Grand Theft Auto Connected, or GTAC, is a multiplayer mod for GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas and GTA IV that you script in JavaScript, Lua or Squirrel. You pick the game with the game setting in server.xml and drop your own game mode into the resources folder. Sync and file downloads share a single port number, and every plan includes free DDoS protection and automatic backups.
GTA Connected, or GTAC, is a fully scriptable multiplayer mod that brings online play to several Grand Theft Auto games. It supports GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas and GTA IV, and the server also has a separate game identifier for Episodes from Liberty City. Synced pedestrians, traffic and missions mean the classic maps feel like living cities rather than bare deathmatch arenas.
Each server serves exactly one game: the game setting in server.xml takes gta:iii, gta:vc, gta:sa or gta:iv. Players need the GTAC client plus their own copy of whichever game your server runs.
GTAC is deliberately designed as an empty sandbox. The server package comes with a freeroam resource, and everything else is yours to write. An eighties-flavored roleplay in Vice City, cops-and-robbers chases in Liberty City, racing nights in San Andreas or a laid-back freeroam server for a small crew in GTA IV are all possible with that flexibility. For developers who enjoy building their own modes, GTAC is a practical way to drive old GTA engines with modern scripting languages.
All of the core GTAC settings live in server.xml. servername sets the browser name, gamemode labels your mode and maxplayers caps the player count at 32 by default, with 127 as the maximum. password sets the join password, duplicatenames controls whether two players can share a name, and minclientversion sets the oldest client build you accept.
On the network side, port and httpport both default to 22000, and when httpserver is on, players download resource files over that port. serverbrowser defaults to false, so you have to set it to true if you want your server in the public list. serverquery switches UDP queries on or off.
The settings that shape gameplay are here too. streamindistance and streamoutdistance control the distance at which entities are sent to and removed from a player, syncinterval sets the sync interval and syncmethod chooses between none, interval and replay. minuteduration sets how many seconds an in-game minute lasts, while timesync and weathersync decide whether the server's clock and weather are pushed to players. rule entries add server rules.
A GTAC game mode is built from resources in the resources folder. Every resource has its own folder and a mandatory meta.xml file, and without meta.xml the resource simply will not load. Each script entry in meta.xml uses type to say whether it runs on the server or the client, language to name the language and src for its path relative to the resource folder. Lua, Squirrel and JavaScript files can all live in the same resource.
Resources that should start at boot are listed in the resources section of server.xml with resource entries. While the server is running, typing start, stop, restart or refresh in the console manages resources without a full restart, so you can fix a script bug without kicking everyone off.
Capabilities that do not ship by default come from modules, with MySQL, SQLite and ini file support as common examples. A loaded module's functions are called through its namespace, so a module with the mysql namespace exposes connect as module.mysql.connect in your scripts. Modules only run on the server and cannot be distributed to clients. Upload resources and modules with the panel file manager or over SFTP.
The GTAC server is very light. What drives memory and CPU use is what your scripts do and how many players are online at once. The server accepts up to 127 players, while GTA IV caps a single session at 32. Within those limits, Bronze 4GB comfortably handles freeroam, racing or a mid-sized roleplay mode.
Larger modes that use a database module, place lots of objects and vehicles or run heavy server-side scripts get a safety margin from Silver 6GB or Gold 8GB. Anything above that clearly exceeds what GTAC needs, and most of that capacity would sit idle.
Keep the game's own limits in mind as well: pedestrians and vehicles around a player are capped at 512 each including traffic, objects at 2048 and blips at 127. Those ceilings have nothing to do with server memory, so a bigger plan will not raise them. On object-heavy maps, adjusting streamindistance and streamoutdistance is the more effective way to balance what players actually see.
Players first install the GTAC client and make sure they own the game your server runs, Vice City for example. They then find your server by name in the server browser or connect directly with your IP address and port. To appear in the browser, set serverbrowser to true in server.xml, since it is off by default.
GTAC uses a single port number: game sync runs over UDP and the HTTP server over TCP, both on 22000 by default. Keep httpserver enabled so players can download your resource files. If the panel assigned you a different port, set both port and httpport to that value.
If you run a passworded server, share the password only with your community. Istanbul hosting keeps latency low for players in Türkiye, which helps car chases in San Andreas and firefights in GTA IV feel more consistent.
Bronze 4GB covers most freeroam, racing or roleplay modes up to 127 players; look at Silver 6GB for heavy game modes that rely on database modules.
Once payment clears, the GTAC server files install automatically and the panel gives you the console, file manager and SFTP connection details.
Set game to gta:iii, gta:vc, gta:sa or gta:iv, then adjust servername, gamemode, maxplayers and, if needed, password for your community.
Upload your resource folders with their meta.xml files to the resources folder over SFTP and add them to the resources section of server.xml as resource entries.
Set serverbrowser to true and restart the server; check the console for resource errors and use start and restart to test resources one at a time if needed.
Post your IP address and port in Discord; players join through the GTAC client, either from the server browser or with a direct connection.
Supported games, scripting languages, server.xml settings and connecting: the questions GTAC server owners ask most.
