Why TheCrewHost for Minetest?

Hardware and access picked for what a Luanti server actually spends its time on.

Fast Cores for Lua Mods

Mod code and ABMs run on the server's main loop, one step after another. Strong per-core speed on the Ryzen 9 9950X keeps the max_lag figure in /status low when everyone is online.

Games, Mods and worldmods

Upload games from ContentDB into games, shared mods into mods, and mods meant for one world only into that world's worldmods folder, through the file manager or SFTP.

Direct minetest.conf Editing

Change name, server_name, max_users, default_privs, enable_damage, creative_mode and every other server setting yourself, then restart to load them.

World Database on NVMe

Every generated or modified map block is written to map.sqlite. As players spread into new terrain, NVMe SSD storage keeps block loads and saves from holding the server up.

Whole-World Backups

Automatic backups cover the world folder with its map database, player inventories and auth records. Grab a manual snapshot in the panel before any large mod update.

Round-the-Clock Support

A world that refuses to load over a missing dependency, a server absent from the list or tangled privileges: reach us by ticket, Discord, WhatsApp, phone or live chat.

Your Minetest (Luanti) server costs $6.00 (₺240.00) a month at TheCrewHost, with memory options spread across 7 plans from 4 GB to 32 GB; every one uses a Ryzen 9 9950X, DDR5 memory and NVMe storage. The project took the name Luanti in October 2024, yet little changed for server owners: settings still live in minetest.conf, and mods are still switched on with load_mod_ lines in world.mt. Pick a game such as Minetest Game, VoxeLibre or NodeCore from ContentDB, upload it, and build your world around it. The server sits in İstanbul, so players across Türkiye dig, place and craft with low latency.

Are Minetest and Luanti the same thing?

Yes. Minetest was renamed Luanti on October 13, 2024. The new name blends the Finnish word luonti, meaning creation, with Lua, the language its games and mods are written in; plenty of people had disliked the word test inside the old name for years.

For a server owner almost nothing changed. The configuration file is still called minetest.conf, worlds keep the same folder layout, and an existing Minetest world can be uploaded and opened as it is. Older clients inside the supported protocol range can still join, and if you want everyone on the same release, turn on strict_protocol_version_checking.

What trips up newcomers is that Luanti is an engine rather than a single game. The server needs to know which game to run, identified by its gameid. Minetest Game is the classic survival sandbox, VoxeLibre and Mineclonia recreate a Minecraft-style experience, and NodeCore is a puzzle-driven world with rules of its own. Decide what your community wants to play before choosing a plan, because that choice drives resource use far more than raw player count.

How much RAM does a Luanti server need, and what really loads it?

Luanti is light. A Minetest Game server with 10 to 20 regular players rarely strains the memory on the Bronze 4GB plan. What pushes memory up is less the player count than the number of map blocks held loaded at once, plus mods that add mobs, machines or automation. Content-heavy games such as VoxeLibre, or long mod lists, are more comfortable on Silver or Gold.

CPU load comes from two places. Lua mod code, ABMs and player interactions run on the main thread, so per-core speed decides how responsive the server feels. Terrain generation runs on separate emerge threads, and num_emerge_threads lets it use more than one core. That is where the extra vCores on Emerald and Xtreme pay off, on servers where groups constantly push into fresh land.

When lag creeps in, check active_block_range and max_block_send_distance first. Shrinking the active block area by a step or two eases the main loop considerably, especially with mods that register many ABMs. On disk, map.sqlite grows with every explored area, and long-lived worlds reaching several gigabytes is perfectly normal.

Installing games and mods on the server

The in-game Content tab only installs to your own computer; for the server, you upload files yourself. Unpack the package you downloaded from ContentDB and place it in games if it is a game, in mods if several worlds should share it, or in the worldmods folder inside a world if it belongs to that world alone. The panel file manager handles small packages, while SFTP is the better route for large modpacks.

A mod sitting in mods does nothing until you enable it: add load_mod_modname = true to world.mt in the world folder. Anything inside worldmods loads automatically for that world. If a dependency is missing, the server names it in the console and refuses to start the world, and the depends line in the mod's mod.conf tells you what else to add.

Players never install server mods themselves. Every client downloads textures, sounds and models from the server while connecting. Once your media grows large, the remote_media setting lets you serve those files over HTTP so first logins finish noticeably faster.

Privileges, registration rules and safe updates

To become admin, write your player name into the name setting in minetest.conf; whoever joins under that name holds every privilege. Grant others individual rights with /grant, take them back with /revoke, and check anyone's current set with /privs.

default_privs decides what brand-new players can do and ships with interact and shout. For something that behaves like a whitelist, remove interact from that list and hand it only to players you approve: everyone else can look around but cannot dig or place blocks. With disallow_empty_password set to true, nobody can register without a password, which also stops people from squatting on names. /ban blocks troublemakers by IP.

Before upgrading the engine, take a manual backup of the world folder in case an older mod turns out to be incompatible with the new release. Update mods in small batches rather than all at once, so when something breaks you know exactly which change caused it. The automatic backups are your fallback if a batch goes wrong.

How do players join a Luanti server?

Players open the Join Game tab in their Luanti client, enter your server IP as the address and the port shown in the panel. Luanti's default port is UDP 30000, and all game traffic travels over UDP. The name and password a player uses on first login are registered on the server and asked for again on every visit after that.

To appear in the public server list, set server_announce to true and fill in server_name and server_description. The listing shows which game you run and how many players are on, so a clear description helps the right people find you. For a private group, leave announcing off and share the address directly.

Luanti also has an Android client, so friends on phones can play in the same world as those on desktops. If your media is large, players on slower connections may sit on the loading screen for a while on their first visit; the client caches those files, so the wait does not repeat on later logins.

How to Set Up a Minetest Server

  1. 1

Pick a plan for your game and group size

Bronze 4GB covers a Minetest Game server for friends; start on Silver or Gold if you plan to run VoxeLibre or a long mod list.

  2. 2

Check out and let setup run by itself

Once payment clears the server installs automatically, and gamepanel.hostingmerkezi.net gives you the console, file manager and SFTP details right away.

  3. 3

Upload the game you want to play

Put the game from ContentDB into games. default_game sets the game for new worlds, while the gameid line in world.mt decides it for an existing one.

  4. 4

    Edit minetest.conf

Set name to your own player name, choose server_name, max_users and server_announce, then restart the server so the changes load.

  5. 5

Add mods and enable them in world.mt

Upload mods into mods or worldmods, add load_mod_ lines to world.mt, and restart until the console shows no missing dependency errors.

  6. 6

Share the address and let players in

Give your group the IP and port, or turn on announcing to appear in the public list; first-time players register with a name and password.

Frequently Asked Questions

What people ask most before starting a Minetest or Luanti server.

How much does Minetest (Luanti) server hosting cost?
The cheapest Luanti plan is $6.00 (₺240.00) a month, and memory across the 7 tiers runs from 4 GB up to 32 GB. Because Luanti is a light engine, most friend groups play comfortably on the entry plan; the larger tiers only make sense for crowded, heavily modded or exploration-heavy servers. Current prices are in the plan table above.
Is there any server-side difference between Minetest and Luanti?
Barely. The project became Luanti in October 2024, but the config file is still minetest.conf and the world layout and mod system are unchanged. You can upload an old Minetest world over SFTP and open it directly, and players on older clients can still connect as long as their protocol version is supported.
Which plan should I pick?
For Minetest Game with up to about 20 players, Bronze 4GB is enough. Mob-heavy games like VoxeLibre or Mineclonia run smoother on Gold 8GB. For big public servers where players keep generating new terrain, Emerald 16GB and its 6 vCores let map generation spread across several cores.
Can I run VoxeLibre or another game?
Yes. Luanti is an engine, so any game on ContentDB can run: VoxeLibre, Mineclonia, NodeCore or classic Minetest Game. Upload it to games and point default_game at it before creating a new world. Switching an existing world's gameid to a different game leaves unknown nodes all over the map, so start a fresh world for a new game.
Where do Luanti mods go, and do players have to install them?
Upload the mod to mods and add load_mod_modname = true to world.mt, or drop it into worldmods to load it for that world automatically. Players install nothing: textures, sounds and models download from the server when they connect, and the mod code itself runs only on the server.
How long does setup take?
Installation runs automatically once payment is confirmed, so you can open the panel straight away. The part that takes time is yours: uploading the game and mods and tuning minetest.conf. With your mod list ready ahead of time, most people welcome their first player in the same sitting.
How do players connect?
In Luanti's Join Game tab, players enter the server IP and the port shown in your panel; the engine's default is UDP 30000. The name and password they pick on first login are registered on the server. With server_announce on, your server also shows up in the public list and can be found by name.
How is my world backed up?
The panel automatically backs up the world folder, including map.sqlite and the player and auth data. Take a manual backup before risky changes such as an engine upgrade or a big mod addition. You can download any backup over SFTP and open it in single-player Luanti to inspect it.
Is a public Luanti server protected against DDoS attacks?
Yes, your Luanti server runs behind free DDoS protection at no extra cost. Luanti carries all game traffic over UDP, and UDP game servers are easy targets for floods of fake packets. Filtering happens at the network level before that traffic reaches your players, which matters most once your server is visible in the public list.
Can I upgrade as my server grows?
Yes, you can move to a higher plan at any time, and your world folder, mods and minetest.conf stay exactly where they are. The signal to upgrade is usually max_lag in /status climbing at peak hours, or map generation falling behind explorers. Try tuning active_block_range first; it often buys a lot of room.
