Why TheCrewHost for Left 4 Dead?

The server-side tools that keep original Left 4 Dead communities alive.

Metamod:Source and SourceMod

Drop Metamod:Source and SourceMod into left4dead/addons and run plugins for admin menus, map votes and team balancing. Admins are defined by Steam ID in admins_simple.ini.

60/100 Tick via Tickrate Enabler

L4D servers run at 30 tick out of the box. Tickrate Enabler plus the -tickrate launch option unlocks 60 or 100, making Hunter pounces and hit registration far more consistent in Versus.

Custom VPK Campaigns

Upload community campaigns as VPK files to left4dead/addons over SFTP. NVMe storage keeps large custom maps loading quickly between chapters.

Full Control in server.cfg

Switch between Campaign, Versus and Survival with mp_gamemode and set co-op difficulty up to Expert with z_difficulty. Hostname, rcon_password and lobby settings all live in one file.

High Clock Speed Where It Counts

srcds runs the game simulation on a single core. The Ryzen 9 9950X's clock speed helps a 100 tick server hit its frame budget even when a Tank and a full horde arrive together.

DDoS Protection Included

Older Source game servers are frequent targets of query-flood attacks. Free DDoS protection filters that traffic and helps keep your Versus match from dropping mid-round.

TheCrewHost Left 4 Dead server hosting starts at ₺240.00 per month and gets you a dedicated Source engine server for the 2008 original, running on a Ryzen 9 9950X with NVMe storage. Host every official campaign from No Mercy to The Sacrifice in Campaign, Versus or Survival. The server sits in our İstanbul datacenter, so players in Türkiye and nearby regions get low-latency Hunter pounces and Smoker pulls. Install Metamod:Source and SourceMod for admin tools, use Tickrate Enabler to push the default 30 tick to 60 or 100, upload custom campaigns as VPK files, and tie the server to your Steam group's lobbies.

What does a Left 4 Dead server run, and why pick the original?

A Left 4 Dead server hosts the game's three modes: four-player co-op Campaign, 4v4 Versus and timed Survival. The official campaigns are No Mercy, Death Toll, Dead Air, Blood Harvest, Crash Course and The Sacrifice, and the special infected roster is limited to the Hunter, Smoker, Boomer, Tank and Witch.

Why host the first game when Left 4 Dead 2 includes all of those campaigns? Because it does not play the same. L4D1 has no Charger, Jockey or Spitter, no melee weapons, a tighter weapon pool and a very different Versus balance. Communities that want the original survivors, the original AI director feel and the original Versus pacing keep coming back to L4D1 servers for exactly that reason.

So here is the simple split. If you want Steam Workshop, Realism, Scavenge, mutations and the bigger competitive scene, head to our Left 4 Dead 2 page. If you are after a nostalgic but serious Versus league, a weekly co-op night with old friends, or Survival records tuned to the first game's timings, an L4D1 server is the right call.

Which plan does an L4D1 server need?

A Left 4 Dead server is a light Source engine process, and the Bronze 4GB plan covers most communities with room to spare. Co-op has four players and Versus has eight; however busy the horde looks on screen, the server's memory footprint stays well under a gigabyte.

Tickrate is the real resource driver, and it loads the CPU rather than RAM. Going from 30 to 100 tick means the server computes more than three times as many simulation steps per second and sends players updates at that rate. What matters there is single-core speed, and every plan from Bronze to Diamond gets the same 4 vCore Ryzen 9 9950X allocation, so a bigger plan will not make one server tick faster.

Larger plans help with other things: storing a big library of custom campaign VPKs, long-retained SourceMod logs, or demo recordings piling up on disk. Silver 6GB leaves comfortable headroom for a plugin-heavy 100 tick Versus server, and Gold 8GB makes room for a large campaign archive. Emerald and Xtreme are far beyond what a single L4D1 server will ever use.

How do you set up SourceMod, higher tickrate and custom campaigns?

Install Metamod:Source first, then SourceMod, into left4dead/addons; both support Left 4 Dead. After a restart, run meta list and sm plugins list in the console to confirm they loaded. To add admins, put Steam IDs and permission flags into addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.ini.

For higher tick, install the Tickrate Enabler plugin on top of Metamod and add -tickrate 100 to the launch line. That alone is not enough: unless you raise sv_mincmdrate, sv_minupdaterate and sv_minrate in server.cfg, players stay stuck at low update rates. After the change, play a few rounds and check the real update rate with net_graph in the client console; that is the only way to see the settings actually took hold.

Custom campaigns usually ship as VPK files that go into left4dead/addons, while some older ones come as .bsp and .nav files for the maps folder. Every player needs the same campaign installed locally, or they will drop when the map changes. Pinning the campaign download link in your Discord solves most of those support questions before they start.

server.cfg, lobby settings and routine administration

The main config file for a Left 4 Dead server is left4dead/cfg/server.cfg. hostname sets the server name, rcon_password the remote admin password, mp_gamemode the mode and z_difficulty the co-op difficulty. Most changes take effect on the next map change or restart.

The lobby system is what trips up most new L4D admins. With sv_allow_lobby_connect_only set to 1, the server only accepts players arriving from an in-game lobby, so set it to 0 if you want direct IP connections. Put your Steam group's ID in sv_steamgroup and your group's lobbies can pick your server, while sv_steamgroup_exclusive 1 reserves it for group members only.

For griefers, SourceMod's basecommands and basebans plugins are a solid start, and vote kicks can stay enabled. The game has been stable for a long time, so version mismatches are rare, but taking a panel backup before you add a new plugin is still a habit worth keeping.

How do players connect to your L4D server?

The console is the most reliable route. Players enable the developer console in keyboard settings, press ~ and type connect followed by the IP:port from your control panel. For this to work, sv_allow_lobby_connect_only must be 0 in server.cfg.

The second route is the lobby. If your server is linked to a Steam group, a group member can create a lobby, choose the group server option, and the game will use your server while it is empty. It is the easiest way to get eight people into a Versus match at once.

If you want a password, sv_password works for direct connections. When someone cannot join a server running a custom campaign, the cause is almost always a missing VPK or one installed at a different version. Ask them to download the campaign again, and if it still fails, send the console output to our support team.

How to Set Up a Left 4 Dead Server

  1. 1

    Choose Bronze or Silver

Bronze 4GB covers vanilla co-op and Versus; pick Silver 6GB if you plan a plugin-heavy 100 tick Versus server and want extra headroom.

  2. 2

    Let provisioning finish after checkout

The Left 4 Dead dedicated server files install automatically and your server shows up in gamepanel.hostingmerkezi.net with its IP and port, ready to start.

  3. 3

    Prepare server.cfg

Set hostname, rcon_password, mp_gamemode and z_difficulty, and add sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0 so players can join by IP.

  4. 4

    Install Metamod:Source and SourceMod

Upload both into left4dead/addons over SFTP, add your own Steam ID to admins_simple.ini and verify with sm plugins list in the console.

  5. 5

Raise the tickrate if you want

Install Tickrate Enabler, add -tickrate 60 or 100 to the launch line and update the rate cvars in server.cfg to match.

  6. 6

Add campaigns and invite your group

Drop custom campaign VPKs into addons, share the download links, and bring players in with the connect command or a Steam group lobby.

Frequently Asked Questions

What people usually ask before hosting an original Left 4 Dead server.

How much does a Left 4 Dead server cost?
Left 4 Dead hosting starts at ₺240.00 per month ($6.00) on the Bronze 4GB plan, with 7 plans to choose from. Current prices are on the order page. Because L4D1 is so light, most communities are well served by the smallest plans, and you can upgrade whenever your needs change.
Should I host Left 4 Dead or Left 4 Dead 2?
If you want Steam Workshop, Realism, Scavenge, mutations and the larger competitive scene, Left 4 Dead 2 is the better fit, and it includes the first game's campaigns too. If your group wants the original survivors, the original special infected and the first game's Versus balance, an L4D1 server is the only way to get that.
How much RAM do I need?
An L4D1 server uses only a small slice of memory, so Bronze 4GB is enough for co-op and Versus. If you plan on 100 tick with a long list of SourceMod plugins, Silver 6GB leaves more breathing room. Bigger plans will not make one server tick faster; they mostly add disk and memory space.
Are SourceMod and plugins supported?
Yes. Metamod:Source and SourceMod both support Left 4 Dead, and you install them into left4dead/addons via SFTP or the file manager. Add plugins for admin menus, map voting, server messages or Versus balancing to the plugins folder. Before downloading a plugin, check its description to confirm it supports L4D1.
Can I run the server at 100 tick?
Yes. Install the Tickrate Enabler plugin on Metamod and add -tickrate 100 to the launch line to lift the default 30 tick. You also need to raise sv_mincmdrate, sv_minupdaterate and sv_minrate in server.cfg. The jump from 30 to 60 tick is very noticeable; 60 to 100 is subtler but popular for competitive Versus.
How fast is setup?
Provisioning starts automatically once your payment is confirmed, and the server is ready in the panel as soon as the game files are installed, usually within a short time. You can launch your first campaign right away and layer SourceMod, Tickrate Enabler and custom campaigns on top at your own pace.
How do players join my server?
Players open the developer console and type connect followed by your server's IP:port, which requires sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0 in server.cfg. Alternatively, link the server to your Steam group with sv_steamgroup so group lobbies can use it; that is the most convenient way to start an eight-player Versus match.
How do backups and DDoS protection work?
Your server is backed up automatically, and you can take a manual backup from the panel at any moment, which is wise before testing a new plugin pack. DDoS protection is free on every plan and helps filter the query-flood attacks that often hit older Source servers. There is nothing to configure.
Can I upgrade later?
Yes, you can move to a bigger plan at any time, and your campaigns, plugins and settings stay intact. For L4D1, the reason to upgrade is usually disk space or memory headroom rather than performance. If you are unsure, our 24/7 support team can advise over ticket, Discord, WhatsApp, phone or live chat.
