Why TheCrewHost for ET Legacy?

The files and settings every Enemy Territory admin already knows, now running on modern hardware.

Full Control via etl_server.cfg

sv_hostname, sv_maxclients, g_password, rconpassword and the rest of the core settings live in etl_server.cfg. Edit it in the panel and restart the server.

Campaign, Stopwatch or Map Vote

Exec campaigncycle.cfg, objectivecycle.cfg, lmscycle.cfg or mapvotecycle.cfg to run campaigns, single objective maps, Last Man Standing or player map voting.

Server-Side Lua Add-ons

The legacy mod supports Lua scripting, so modules loaded through lua_modules can add admin commands, stat tracking or custom announcements.

Omni-bot to Keep Maps Busy

The legacy mod works with Omni-bot, so bots fill gaps when few people are online and newcomers never spawn into an empty map late at night.

Fast HTTP Map Downloads

Use sv_wwwDownload and sv_wwwBaseURL to serve custom .pk3 files from a web address instead of the slow built-in transfer, so new maps reach players much faster.

Referee and Shoutcaster Roles

Give match officials access with refereePassword and casters their own login with shoutcastPassword while you keep rconpassword to yourself.

An ET: Legacy server at TheCrewHost starts at ₺240.00 per month ($6.00), and the 4 GB Bronze plan handles even a packed public server with ease. ET: Legacy is an open-source project built on the released source code of the id Tech 3-based Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory; the server runs etlded and reads its settings from etl_server.cfg. Setup finishes automatically after payment, then you pick a campaign, stopwatch or map-vote rotation and upload custom .pk3 maps over SFTP. Hosted in Istanbul, the server gives players in Türkiye low ping while old ET friends across Europe connect comfortably.

What is ET: Legacy and what can you run on the server?

ET: Legacy is the community-maintained continuation of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, whose source code was released under the GPLv3 in 2010, and hosting it means running classic ET gameplay on an actively maintained engine. Axis and Allies meet on objective maps: one side builds bridges, blows gates and steals documents while the other tries to stop them. The division of labor between Soldier, Medic, Engineer, Field Ops and Covert Ops is the heart of the game.

Original maps like Oasis, Battery, Fuel Dump, Gold Rush, Rail Gun and Radar are still server staples, joined by community favorites such as Supply Depot, Frostbite and Adlernest. Game types are set with g_gametype: single-map objective, stopwatch where both teams play the same map and race the clock, campaign where several maps are played back to back, Last Man Standing with one life per round, and the map voting type that ET: Legacy adds. The sample etl_server.cfg ships with 24 slots; public servers usually raise that to fit their community, while the competitive scene revolves around 3v3 and 6v6 stopwatch matches.

How many resources does an ET: Legacy server need?

Very few. The 4 GB Bronze plan does not come close to struggling for memory, even at 64 slots, the ceiling of id Tech 3. etlded renders no graphics, runs on a single core by design, and the whole game's data set is small by modern standards.

Three things add load. First, Omni-bot: every bot runs pathfinding and decision logic on the server, so CPU use rises with bot count. Second, Lua modules; scripts that fire on every player action or every frame can keep that single core needlessly busy if they are written carelessly. Third, your custom map collection, which affects disk space and player download time rather than memory. The Ryzen 9 9950X's strong single-core performance absorbs the first two easily, and NVMe storage keeps map transitions short. That makes Bronze the right starting point for ET: Legacy. A large community server running many bots and heavy Lua will find enough extra headroom on Silver; anything above that brings no return in this game.

How do you set up etl_server.cfg and the map rotation?

The main configuration file is etl_server.cfg in the etmain folder. sv_hostname sets the name in the server list, sv_maxclients the total slots, sv_privateclients the reserved slots, and g_password an optional join password. For administration you define rconpassword, for match officials refereePassword, and for casters shoutcastPassword; keeping all three different is a sensible security habit.

The rotation depends on which cycle file etl_server.cfg executes at the end. In the sample config, mapvotecycle.cfg is active; switch to campaigncycle.cfg for campaigns, objectivecycle.cfg for single objective maps or lmscycle.cfg for Last Man Standing. Inside those files, maps are chained together with vstr, so reordering them takes a few lines. sv_pure 1 forces players to use files that match the server's .pk3 set; because it cuts down on mismatches and modified files, we recommend leaving it on for public servers.

How do you add custom maps, Lua and Omni-bot?

Custom maps come as .pk3 files and go into the server's etmain folder. Players download missing files when they connect, which sv_allowDownload enables. The built-in transfer is slow, though, so experienced admins set sv_wwwDownload 1 and point sv_wwwBaseURL at a web address hosting the same .pk3 files. One of TheCrewHost's web hosting plans works well for that: upload the maps there too and players grab them far more quickly.

On the Lua side, the legacy mod loads several scripts at once through the lua_modules variable, which is how admin commands, welcome messages, stat collectors and weapon restrictions usually run. Put the script files in the mod folder and list them on the lua_modules line in etl_server.cfg. Omni-bot is switched on with omnibot_enable. Keep the bot count modest so real players always have room to join, and remember to disable bots before a competitive match.

How do players connect to an ET: Legacy server?

Players find your server in the ET: Legacy client's server list, or open the console and type /connect with the IP and port; the default port is UDP 27960. Your server's assigned port is listed in the panel, so share the address exactly as it appears there. Making sure everyone plays on a current ET: Legacy client lets them use every feature the server offers.

For clan matches, set g_password and hand referee rights to a match official. The referee uses /ref commands in-game to lock teams, pause and restart the match, all without anyone needing the rcon password. A shoutcaster login gives whoever is streaming extra information while spectating. To join a password-protected server, players first enter the password in the console with /password and then connect. With the server in Istanbul, players in Türkiye get low ping, and ET communities across Europe and the Caucasus enjoy a well-balanced connection.

How to Set Up a ET Legacy Server

  1. 1

    Start on the Bronze plan

An ET: Legacy server is light; the 4 GB Bronze plan suits most public and clan servers. If you intend to run lots of Omni-bots, consider Silver.

  2. 2

Pay and let setup finish automatically

Once payment is confirmed the server installs itself, and the control panel gives you the console, file manager and backups straight away.

  3. 3

    Edit etl_server.cfg

Fill in the server name, slot count, rconpassword and refereePassword, then choose the campaign, objective or map-vote cycle.

  4. 4

    Upload custom .pk3 maps

Drop maps into the etmain folder over SFTP and add them to the cycle file; for large collections, enable HTTP downloads with sv_wwwBaseURL.

  5. 5

    Configure Lua and Omni-bot

Add the Lua scripts you want to the lua_modules line, switch on bots with omnibot_enable if needed, and restart from the panel.

  6. 6

Share the address and start playing

Players join from the server list or with /connect and your IP:port; for clan matches, give the referee password to the match official.

Frequently Asked Questions

What admins ask before launching an ET: Legacy server: plans, game files, maps, Lua and connecting.

How much does ET: Legacy server hosting cost?
ET: Legacy server hosting begins at ₺240.00 a month ($6.00) on the Bronze plan. Each plan bundles 4 GB or more of DDR5 memory, a Ryzen 9 9950X, NVMe storage, unlimited traffic and free DDoS protection. Of the 7 plans, Bronze already covers what ET: Legacy needs.
Which plan fits my player count?
With ET: Legacy, think in terms of CPU rather than memory. Bronze carries a server of up to 64 slots; if you run lots of Omni-bots alongside heavy Lua modules, Silver gives more comfortable headroom. Larger plans make no noticeable difference in this game.
Do I need the original Enemy Territory files?
ET: Legacy uses the pak0.pk3, pak1.pk3 and pak2.pk3 data files from the original Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Because Enemy Territory was released as a free game, those files are freely distributable. If you notice anything missing on your server, message our support team and we will check the installation with you.
Can I use Lua scripts and custom maps?
Yes. The legacy mod loads multiple Lua scripts through the lua_modules variable, which is how admin tools, stats and custom rules are added. Upload scripts and .pk3 maps with the file manager or SFTP, update the relevant line in etl_server.cfg, and restart the server.
When will my server be ready?
Installation starts automatically once your payment is confirmed, so you can move straight on to configuring the server. We suggest changing the server name and every password in etl_server.cfg first, then picking your rotation and opening the server to players.
How do players join the server?
Players pick your server from the ET: Legacy client's server list, or open the console, type /connect and enter the IP and port. For password-protected servers they set the password with /password first. Pinning the address in your Discord makes it easy for newcomers to find.
How do players download custom maps?
With sv_allowDownload on, missing .pk3 files come down from the server when players connect, but that built-in transfer is slow. Serving the files from a web server through sv_wwwDownload and sv_wwwBaseURL speeds downloads up considerably, and a TheCrewHost web hosting plan can host them for you.
How do backups work?
Every plan includes automatic backups, and you can also take one manually from the panel. Back up before rewriting cycle files, testing a new Lua script or adding a large map pack, so you can quickly restore the previous setup if something goes wrong.
Is DDoS protection included?
Yes, every ET: Legacy server comes with free DDoS protection and no traffic cap. In long-running ET communities, rivalries between clans can occasionally spill over into attacks, and the protection reduces the risk of a match night being cut short.
Can I upgrade my plan?
Yes. Upgrades are available whenever you want them from the customer area at my.thecrewhost.com. With ET: Legacy the need usually appears only on large community servers where many bots and heavy Lua modules run at the same time.
