Why TheCrewHost for CurseForge Generic?

One server type, thousands of possible CurseForge packs, and the hardware and tools to keep whichever one you choose running smoothly.

You choose the pack and version

Identify the pack by the Project ID on its CurseForge page and the version by that file's File ID. Pinning a version guarantees an exact match with your players' clients.

The loader your pack needs

Forge, NeoForge, Fabric or Quilt: installation follows the loader and Minecraft version declared in the pack's metadata, so you never have to run an installer by hand.

Strong cores for big packs

Kitchen-sink packs calculate hundreds of machines and entities every tick. The single-core strength of the Ryzen 9 9950X keeps TPS high, and Emerald and Xtreme add more vCores.

Faster boots on NVMe

Scanning hundreds of mod jars and saving chunks both depend on disk speed. Samsung 990 EVO Plus NVMe drives shorten startup and world saves on large packs.

Console and full file access

Edit the mods and config folders through the file manager or SFTP. If a client-only mod crashes the server, the console names it and you can pull it out in minutes.

Backups before every update

On top of automatic backups you can take manual ones from the panel. If a new version drops a mod and holes appear in your world, rolling back takes a few clicks.

Our CurseForge modpack server hosting opens at ₺440.00 ($11.00) a month with Gold 8GB, which combines 8 GB of DDR5 RAM and Ryzen 9 9950X cores on NVMe storage. The CurseForge Generic server type is not locked to one pack: you tell it which CurseForge modpack and which version you want, and the server is prepared for that pack. A huge All the Mods install and the notoriously punishing 1.12.2 pack RLCraft run on the same infrastructure. Servers sit in our İstanbul datacenter, so players in Türkiye connect with low latency. Setup is automatic after payment, and you get full access to the mods, config and world folders through the panel or SFTP.

Which modpacks can you install with CurseForge Generic?

CurseForge Generic is a general-purpose installer rather than a single-pack server, so almost any modpack published on CurseForge that supports dedicated servers can be set up this way. Giant kitchen-sink packs, Create-focused engineering packs, brutal adventure packs like RLCraft and quest-driven expert packs all follow the same pattern.

Choosing a pack comes down to two pieces of information. The first is the Project ID, shown in the About Project box on the modpack page. The second is the version: every file on the Files tab has its own File ID, visible at the end of that file's URL. If no version is specified, the installer typically grabs the newest file, which can drift away from what your players have installed. Pinning a specific version is the safer habit.

CurseForge labels files as Release, Beta or Alpha, and sticking to Release builds for a community server means fewer surprises. Many authors also upload a dedicated Server Pack under Additional Files; its version number must match the client pack as well.

How much RAM does your modpack need?

The right amount depends on three things: mod count, Minecraft version and how many players explore at the same time. This server type is sized for large packs, so the smallest option is Gold 8GB. That covers packs up to roughly 150 mods with two to six players, and 1.12.2 packs such as RLCraft use less memory per mod and sit comfortably at this tier.

Modern kitchen-sink packs with 200 to 300 mods are a different story. They need a lot of memory just to finish booting, so Platinum 10GB is realistic for a small group and Diamond 12GB for an active community. For ten to twenty players with heavy automation, Emerald 16GB adds both memory and six vCores.

Over-allocating RAM does not speed anything up by itself, because the main tick loop still runs on one core. If the pack author lists a recommended memory amount, treat that as your starting point and scale up as your player count grows.

Server packs, mod loaders and Java: how do you keep everything compatible?

Every Minecraft version expects a particular Java release. As a rule of thumb, 1.16.5 and older run on Java 8, 1.17 on Java 16, 1.18 through 1.20.4 on Java 17, and 1.20.5 onward on Java 21. A server started with the wrong Java simply will not boot, so a version error in the console almost always points here.

The most common modpack crash comes from client-only mods. Shader loaders, minimap overlays and rendering tweaks can fail on a dedicated server, and Forge reports something like "invalid dist DEDICATED_SERVER". Well-built server packs strip those mods out already; if yours does not, remove the mod named in the error from the mods folder.

Most errors players see while joining come down to version drift. Make sure the server and every client run the exact same pack version. If a mod was updated on only one side, a mismatch is inevitable.

Handling pack updates and backups

Before any update, take a manual backup from the panel. Then read the changelog for the new version carefully. If a mod was removed, its blocks and items disappear from the world, and that cannot be undone. On big jumps, such as an update that moves the pack to a newer Minecraft version, the existing world may not carry over at all.

Keep a note of the changes you made in the config folder. An update can restore the pack's defaults and quietly reset a value you tuned by hand. The same goes for any extra mods you added on top of the pack.

After updating, watch the console until the server starts cleanly, and only then move your players to the new version. If something goes wrong, restoring an automatic or manual backup is faster and safer than trying to patch a half-finished update.

What keeps TPS high on a modpack server?

Generating new chunks is the biggest source of lag on modded servers. Pre-generating the world to a set radius before players spread out removes most of the stutter during exploration. On modern versions Chunky is the usual tool, and because it only runs on the server, you can add it without asking players to install anything.

The next step is measuring. The spark profiler shows which mod, block or entity is costing the most tick time, so you act on data instead of guesses. Frequent offenders are item piles on the ground, crowded animal farms, chunks kept permanently loaded and large moving contraptions.

In server.properties, keeping view-distance and the simulation-distance setting added in 1.18 at sensible values makes a real difference. Players still see far into the distance, but the server only runs game logic for the area close to them.

How to Set Up a CurseForge Generic Server

  1. 1

Size the plan to the modpack

Choose Gold 8GB for light and medium packs, or Platinum 10GB and up for kitchen-sink packs with more than 200 mods. Setup starts automatically after payment.

  2. 2

Note the Project ID and version

Copy the Project ID from the modpack page and the File ID of your chosen version from the Files tab. If you are unsure where to enter them, our support team can help.

  3. 3

    Follow the first startup log

Start the server and follow the mod loading. If a client-only mod fails, the console shows its name; delete it in the file manager and restart.

  4. 4

    Edit server.properties

Set allow-flight=true, the whitelist, view-distance and, where available, simulation-distance. Packs with jetpacks or flight items need flight enabled.

  5. 5

    Pre-generate the world

Before players arrive, generate the area around spawn to a fixed radius with a tool like Chunky. You only do it once, and exploration stutters far less afterwards.

  6. 6

Invite players on the same version

Players install the same version of the pack in the CurseForge app, then add your panel's IP:port under Multiplayer > Add Server.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions people ask most when moving a CurseForge modpack onto a server: versions, server packs, Java and joining.

How much does a CurseForge modpack server cost?
CurseForge modpack server hosting starts at ₺440.00 ($11.00) per month on the Gold 8GB plan. This server type comes in 5 plans with 8 GB to 32 GB of RAM. Each plan includes the same safety net of DDoS protection, automatic backups, SFTP access and unlimited traffic; the plans differ in RAM, vCores and disk space alone.
How much RAM should I get for my pack?
Gold 8GB handles packs up to roughly 150 mods with a small group. Modern kitchen-sink packs in the 200 to 300 mod range are more realistic on Platinum 10GB or Diamond 12GB. For more than ten players with heavy automation, look at Emerald 16GB, and at Xtreme 32GB for very busy communities.
What if my pack has no server pack?
Some authors never publish a separate server pack. In that case the server is built from the client files, and client-only mods may need to be weeded out. If the console shows an "invalid dist" style error, removing the named mod from the mods folder usually fixes it. If you are not sure, open a ticket and we will take a look.
Which Java version should the server run?
It depends on the pack's Minecraft version: 1.16.5 and older generally need Java 8, 1.18 through 1.20.4 need Java 17, and 1.20.5 onward need Java 21. With the wrong Java the server will not start and the console shows a version error. If that happens, just open a support ticket.
Can I add or remove mods?
Yes. You have full access to the mods folder through the file manager or SFTP. Server-side-only mods such as Chunky or spark can be added without touching players' installs, while content mods must be installed by every player too. Back up before removing a mod, because its blocks will vanish from the world.
How long does setup take?
Installation begins on its own as soon as payment is confirmed. How long it runs depends on the size of the pack, since every mod file has to be downloaded. The first boot of a pack with hundreds of mods can also take a few minutes; once the console reports startup is done, the server is ready.
How do players connect?
Players install the same version of the same modpack in the CurseForge app and launch it. Other launchers that import CurseForge packs, such as Prism Launcher, work too. After that, adding the panel's IP:port through Multiplayer > Add Server is all it takes.
How do backups work?
Automatic backups run without any setup, and the panel lets you trigger an extra one yourself whenever you like. On modded servers the riskiest moments are pack updates and mod removals, so a backup right before either one lets you put the world back the way it was within minutes.
Is DDoS protection included?
Yes. DDoS protection is free and switched on by default on all of our game servers. Even if you run a public modpack server, attack traffic gets filtered so players stay connected. Traffic is unlimited as well, so a packed evening never triggers extra charges.
Can I scale up if I switch to a heavier pack?
Yes, you can move to a higher plan from the customer area whenever you want. Going from a light pack to a 250-mod kitchen-sink pack, or simply gaining more players, is a good reason to step up from Gold to Diamond or Emerald. Take a backup before switching, just in case.
