What is Wurm Unlimited, and what changes on your own server?
Wurm Unlimited is the standalone, self-hostable version of Code Club AB's sandbox MMO Wurm Online. You flatten terrain by digging, fell trees, mine, build boats, raise animals and found a village. Almost every action trains a skill, and that progress is deliberately slow; it is what makes Wurm feel like Wurm.
On your own server you decide how slow. Raise the skill gain multiplier to give a time-starved group of friends faster progress, or increase action speed to shorten waiting times. Communities chasing the original experience simply keep those values at their defaults.
A dedicated server also suits Wurm's persistent world. As long as the server is up, crops grow, animals age and breed, and neglected items slowly decay. Your village keeps living while you are away, and friends can log in whenever they want to carry on with their own projects. A peaceful building community or a PvP server where kingdoms clash, both are possible.
Adventure, Creative or a custom map?
Wurm Unlimited ships with two maps. Adventure is a ready-made world with a tutorial area and NPCs, and its default server name is Heavenord. Creative is a blank map where players spawn at randomly placed soul stones and shape the world from scratch.
For a group trying Wurm for the first time, Adventure offers more guidance. Experienced players who want to lay out their own villages and roads from nothing usually go for Creative or a custom map.
If you want a custom map, generate it on your own PC with a map tool and upload the map files into the server folder over SFTP. Size matters here: doubling the length of a map's edge quadruples the total tile count. A bigger map means more memory, longer startup and larger backups. Picking a map far too big for your player count can also make the world feel empty and scattered.
How much RAM does a Wurm Unlimited server need?

How do server settings, GM powers and backups work?
Wurm Unlimited's server settings cover the essentials: server name, password, maximum players, PvP, skill gain rate and action speed. Administration runs on GM power levels. They range from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest. Level 5 GMs receive an ebony wand used to shape terrain, create items and manage players. Handing trusted moderators lower levels lets you share authority in a controlled way.
The most important rule for backups is that map files and databases must come from the same moment. Rolling one back to a different time than the other creates inconsistencies in the world. So when taking a manual backup, stop the server and back up the entire server folder. The panel's automatic backups also protect that folder as a whole.
What can server mods add to Wurm Unlimited?
One of the Wurm Unlimited community's most widely used tools is WurmServerModLauncher, a server mod loader developed by ago1024. Mods added through it run only on the server, so players do not need to install anything on their clients. You install it by extracting the launcher package into the server folder, and each mod keeps its settings in its own config file inside the mods folder.
The bundled mods include Announcer, which announces players logging in, SpellMod, which expands what priests can do, BagOfHolding, which increases container capacity, and mods that change creature, crop and harvesting behavior. The ServerPacks mod handles delivering extra packs that other mods need to your players.
When adding mods, enable them one at a time and start the server after each, so it is easy to spot which one causes a problem. If a mod makes permanent changes to the world, always take a backup before adding it.
