The files, settings and resources you will actually work with when running a Windrose dedicated server.
Edit ServerName, InviteCode, IsPasswordProtected, Password and MaxPlayerCount in the web file manager, restart, and the new settings take effect right away.
Pick Easy, Medium or Hard with WorldPresetType in WorldDescription.json, then tune MobDamageMultiplier, ShipsHealthMultiplier and Coop.SharedQuests to suit your crew.
Upload a world folder from your PC's SaveProfiles directory over SFTP and match WorldIslandId, and your crew picks up exactly where it stopped.
Windrose expects the client and server versions to match, so after each Early Access patch, update the server files and take a manual backup first.
The official guide suggests 2 cores at 3.2 GHz; every plan here starts at 4 vCores of Ryzen 9 9950X, leaving generous headroom for naval battles and busy bases.
Because the server runs on its own, your world no longer depends on the host's PC, while free DDoS protection and automatic backups keep it safe.
Windrose server hosting plans are listed from $6.00 (₺240.00) per month, but because Windrose's official requirements call for 8 GB of RAM even for two players, the realistic starting point is our Gold 8 GB plan. What you get is a Windrose dedicated server whose world stays online 24/7, with ServerDescription.json and WorldDescription.json fully in your hands. In Kraken Express's Age of Piracy survival game you build bases, crew ships and fight naval battles, and with a dedicated server your crew never has to wait for the host to log in. It runs on Ryzen 9 9950X and NVMe SSD hardware in İstanbul, with free DDoS protection and automatic backups.
Windrose is an open-world survival adventure set in the Age of Piracy, developed by Kraken Express and released into Early Access on April 14, 2026 on Steam, the Epic Games Store and Stove. Players gather resources, build forts and bases, crew ships, fight naval battles and take on bosses. It plays solo or in co-op for up to eight players, although the developers currently recommend a maximum of four for the smoothest experience.
There are two ways to play with friends: one of you hosts from the game client, or you run a dedicated server. Hosting looks convenient, but the world is only reachable while that person is online, and the official guide recommends 24 GB of total RAM to run the game and the server on the same PC.
A dedicated server solves both problems. The world stays online 24/7, whoever in the crew is free can jump in and keep exploring, and nobody's gaming PC has to carry the server load. At TheCrewHost the server files come installed; you edit the configuration files and share your invite code.
Windrose is memory-hungry on the server side, and the official guide's table makes that clear: 8 GB of RAM for two players, 12 GB for four, and 16 GB for a ten-player load. The same table lists 2 CPU cores at 3.2 GHz and 35 GB of SSD storage.
That is why we do not recommend Bronze 4 GB or Silver 6 GB for Windrose; both fall below the official minimum. For a crew of two, Gold 8 GB is the floor, and Platinum 10 GB adds some breathing room. For the four-player crew the developers recommend, Diamond 12 GB is the right choice. If you plan to sail with the full eight-player crew the game allows, move up to Emerald 16 GB; Xtreme 32 GB offers ample headroom for a sprawling late-game world and long sessions.
CPU and disk will not hold you back: every plan comes with at least 4 vCores of Ryzen 9 9950X, and even the smallest disk exceeds the 35 GB recommendation on NVMe. With world data sitting on NVMe, saves and loads stay quick as well.
A Windrose server is managed through two JSON files. ServerDescription.json in the root folder is the server's identity: ServerName sets its name, InviteCode is the code players use to find you, and MaxPlayerCount caps simultaneous players. To require a password, set IsPasswordProtected to true and fill in Password. Leave PersistentServerId alone; it is the server's unique identifier.
The invite code may only use 0–9, a–z and A–Z, must be at least six characters long, and is case-sensitive. WorldIslandId tells the server which world to load and must exactly match the world folder's ID. UserSelectedRegion sets the region of the connection service that the invite-code system relies on.
Each world has its own WorldDescription.json inside its folder. There you set the world's name with WorldName and pick the Easy, Medium or Hard preset with WorldPresetType. Under WorldSettings, MobHealthMultiplier, MobDamageMultiplier, ShipsHealthMultiplier, ShipsDamageMultiplier, BoardingDifficultyMultiplier and CombatDifficulty fine-tune the balance, while Coop.SharedQuests decides whether quests are shared across the crew.
A world you started in host mode with friends does not have to be abandoned. According to the official guide, client saves on Windows live under R5\Saved\SaveProfiles in your local AppData folder. Inside its RocksDB directory, each world sits in a folder named after its ID.
The transfer itself is straightforward. Stop the server first and take a manual backup of its current state. Upload the entire world folder over SFTP to the matching Worlds directory under R5/Saved on the server. Then set WorldIslandId in ServerDescription.json to that folder's ID and restart.
One critical warning: do not rename world folders. The database depends on those IDs, and a renamed folder may fail to load. The same approach lets you keep several worlds on the server and switch between them by changing WorldIslandId and restarting. It also works in reverse, so you can download the server's world and drop it back into a local save. Before any transfer, make sure the client and server are on the same game version.
Because Windrose is in Early Access, updates arrive often, and the official guide stresses that the game client and server versions must always match. When they differ, players may be unable to connect or may run into unexpected bugs. After a game update the server files need updating too, and taking a manual backup from the panel beforehand means you can restore your world safely if something goes wrong.
In ServerDescription.json, AutoLoadLatestBackupIfHasBroken concerns automatically loading the latest backup when a save becomes corrupted, and CanLaunchMultipleServerInstances is a safeguard against data corruption. We suggest not changing either unless you know exactly what it does.
When players cannot connect, check these first: are the client and server on the same version, is the invite code correct including letter case, and if the server is password-protected, was the right password entered? If crowded sessions stutter, compare your player count with the official RAM table; crews larger than four push plans under 12 GB past their limits.
In Windrose, players join with an invite code rather than an IP address. A player opens the game, goes to Play, chooses Connect to Server and pastes the InviteCode value you set in ServerDescription.json. If the server is password-protected, they enter the password at that point.
It pays to make the invite code memorable but hard to guess, and remember the six-character minimum. Share it only with your crew, and if you plan to post it in a public Discord channel, switch on password protection too. To change the code, edit the file and restart the server; the old code stops working.
ServerDescription.json also offers a direct connection option through UseDirectConnection and DirectConnectionServerPort. In that mode the server opens sockets for clients directly, and the port has to be available for both TCP and UDP. For most crews, the invite code is enough and by far the least hassle. With the server in İstanbul, crewmates connecting from Türkiye and nearby regions have a short route to it.
Following the official table, choose Gold 8 GB for two players, Diamond 12 GB for four, and Emerald 16 GB for a full eight-player crew; Bronze and Silver are too small.
Your server installs automatically once payment is confirmed; gamepanel.hostingmerkezi.net gives you the console, file manager and SFTP details.
Fill in ServerName, an InviteCode of at least six characters, MaxPlayerCount and, if you like, IsPasswordProtected and Password; do not touch PersistentServerId.
Set the difficulty preset and multipliers in WorldDescription.json, or upload your local world folder over SFTP and match WorldIslandId.
Restart the server to apply changes, and confirm your game client and the server run the same version, otherwise connection problems follow.
Friends choose Play, then Connect to Server, paste the invite code, enter the password if there is one, and land straight in your world.
