Your server runs the game's official dedicated server software, so the world stays open even when the friend who usually hosts is offline.

Set the world name, campaign or sandbox type, seed, difficulty preset and password in one config file, then restart the server to apply them.

Steam, Epic Games, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players can all join the same server; just share the invite code the console prints once the session starts.

Permission and rules files

Restrict building and storage rights with MoriaServerPermissions.txt, and greet everyone who joins with a message of up to 1024 characters in MoriaServerRules.txt.

Bring your existing world

Upload the .sav file starting with MW_ from your PC to the server's SaveGamesDedicated folder over SFTP and continue your expedition where you stopped.

With TheCrewHost, Return to Moria server hosting begins at ₺440.00 ($11.00) per month on the game's official dedicated server, with 8 GB to 32 GB of RAM to choose from. Your The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria world stays online 24/7 in our İstanbul datacenter on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X hardware with NVMe storage, so up to eight dwarves can play at once and whoever is free can head into the mines at any hour. You set the world type, difficulty and password in MoriaServerConfig.ini, and players join with the invite code shown in the console or by IP and port. Steam, Epic, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players can share the same server.

Why run Return to Moria on a dedicated server?

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is a survival game about dwarves reclaiming the mines of Moria, mixing digging, crafting, base building and defense against orc hordes. Multiplayer normally runs on one player's PC, and the expedition pauses the moment that player logs off.

The official dedicated server removes that dependency. Because it stays up in İstanbul, members of your company can drop in at different times: one gathers ore late at night while another takes over at the forge the next day. Up to eight players can be connected at once, but there is no limit on how many different players join over time, which suits larger friend groups who rotate.

The server supports crossplay, so Steam and Epic Games players can share a world with people on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Getting friends on different platforms into the same mine needs no extra setup.

What is in MoriaServerConfig.ini?

Every core setting lives in MoriaServerConfig.ini, which is created the first time the server runs. Always edit it with the server stopped; the file's own comments note that changes made in-game can overwrite it.

In the [Main] section, OptionalPassword makes players enter a password on join, and it is case-sensitive. In [World], Name sets which world to load; if no world by that name exists, the server creates one using the [World.Create] settings. If you have several worlds with the same name, OptionalWorldFilename lets you point straight at the file.

In [Host], ListenPort defaults to 7777, and leaving AdvertiseAddress on auto lets the server detect its public IP by itself. On a hosted server these simply need to match the port and address assigned in your panel. Enabled in the [Console] section decides whether the server opens a console window where you can type commands.

How do you choose world type and difficulty?

The [World.Create] section only applies to newly created worlds and is ignored when an existing world is loaded. Type takes campaign or sandbox: campaign follows the story progression, while sandbox offers freer play. Leave Seed on random for a random world, or enter a number to regenerate the same map later.

Difficulty.Preset accepts story, solo, normal, hard or custom. Story suits players who want the narrative without much danger, normal is aimed at a small company of dwarves and hard at large groups. Choosing custom lets you set each category separately from verylow to veryhigh: CombatDifficulty covers enemy damage and health, EnemyAggression attack frequency, MiningDrops the ore each vein yields, HordeFrequency how often noisy work draws an orc horde, and SiegeFrequency how often your base comes under siege.

Hard is a good starting point for a full company of eight, while groups who want to progress through mining without constant fighting can raise MiningDrops and lower HordeFrequency with custom.

How much RAM do you need, and what does LoadedAreaLimit change?

LoadedAreaLimit has the biggest influence on a Return to Moria server's memory and CPU use. It is the number of areas kept loaded at once and ranges from 4 to 32. According to the game's own config notes, the default of 12 handles eight-player sessions well, and dropping to 8 noticeably improves performance for four-player sessions. Going above 12 reduces loading walls but greatly increases memory and CPU use, because more enemies have to be simulated.

That makes Gold 8GB a sound start for 2 to 6 players on default settings. For groups who regularly play with eight, we recommend Platinum 10GB, and Diamond 12GB or Emerald 16GB for those raising LoadedAreaLimit above 12. Since only eight players can connect at once, Xtreme is more than this game needs.

ServerFPS defaults to 60, and higher values are not expected to help a dedicated server. The game suggests 30 if CPU use gets too high, though the strong single-thread performance of the Ryzen 9 9950X makes that unnecessary in most cases.

Moving your existing world and getting players connected

An expedition you started on your own PC can move to the server. On Steam, worlds sit in AppData\Local\Moria\Saved\SaveGamesSteam, and on Epic in SaveGamesEpic. Upload the .sav file that starts with MW_ to the SaveGamesDedicated folder on the server via SFTP, match the Name line in MoriaServerConfig.ini to that world's name and start the server.

Once the session begins, the server console displays an invite code. Players type it into the search field on the Join World screen to find your server. Anyone who prefers IP and port can use the Direct Join section under Advanced Join Options. If you set a password, it is requested on join.

MoriaServerPermissions.txt lets you set building rights (NoConstruction, QuickBuild, AllConstruction) and storage rights (NoStorage, AllStorage), and MoriaServerRules.txt holds a join message where you can post your server rules. For dwarves connecting from Türkiye, the İstanbul location helps hits land on time when a big orc attack rolls in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about Return to Moria hosting, from invite codes and crossplay to moving worlds and tuning performance.

How much does Return to Moria server hosting cost?
The Gold plan, at $11.00 (₺440.00) per month with 8 GB of RAM, is the entry point for hosting Return to Moria. You can choose from 5 plans. Every plan comes standard with a Ryzen 9 9950X CPU, DDR5 memory, NVMe SSD, free DDoS protection, unlimited traffic and automatic backups.
How many players can be connected at the same time?
A Return to Moria dedicated server accepts up to eight players at once. There is no cap on the total number of different players who join over time, so a larger community can rotate through the same world. That limit does not change with plan size.
Can console players join?
Yes. The Return to Moria dedicated server supports crossplay, so Steam and Epic Games players can play on the same server as people on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Console friends join the same way, by searching for the invite code on the Join World screen.
Which plan suits a company of 2 to 8 dwarves?
For groups of 2 to 6 on default settings, the Gold plan with 8 GB is enough. A full company of eight is better served by Platinum 10GB, and Diamond or Emerald suits you if you want LoadedAreaLimit above 12. That setting is the main driver of memory use.
Can I move the world from my own PC to the server?
Yes. Upload the MW_ .sav file from AppData\Local\Moria\Saved\SaveGamesSteam on Steam, or SaveGamesEpic on Epic, to the server's SaveGamesDedicated folder over SFTP. Then match the Name line in MoriaServerConfig.ini to the world's name and restart the server.
How do players connect?
When the session starts, the server console shows an invite code, and players type it into the search field on the Join World screen. Alternatively, they can enter the server's IP address and port in the Direct Join section under Advanced Join Options. If you set OptionalPassword, they are asked for it on join.
How is my world backed up?
Your Moria world is covered by the panel's automatic backups, and you can add manual ones whenever you like. If you want an archive at home, pull the world file down over SFTP as well. Backing up before a major game update or a difficulty change is the easiest way to protect your expedition.
Is there DDoS protection?
Yes, and it costs nothing extra: DDoS protection is part of every plan. Once an invite code or IP gets shared around, your server can reach a wider audience than planned; the protection filters malicious traffic, while OptionalPassword and the permissions file let you control who gets in and what they can do.
How quickly is the server ready?
Provisioning kicks in automatically after payment, and your server shows up in the panel shortly after. The config files are generated on first launch, after which you stop the server and enter your world name, password and difficulty. If any step trips you up, our support team answers in Turkish around the clock via live chat, tickets and Discord.
Can I change my plan later?
Yes. Moving from Gold up to Platinum, Diamond or Emerald is possible whenever you want. It comes in handy when you want to raise LoadedAreaLimit or smooth out play for a full company of eight. Take a panel backup before switching to keep your world safe.
