Why TheCrewHost for Subnautica?

Stop running Nitrox on your own PC: let a hosted server handle syncing, saving and backups for the whole crew.

Nitrox server application

Your server runs the Nitrox server software itself, so player positions, inventories, base pieces and vehicles are synced from one place and nobody has to act as the host.

Direct server.cfg editing

Change GameMode, ServerPassword, AdminPassword, MaxConnections and SaveInterval in the file manager, then restart once to apply them.

Two layers of backups

Nitrox keeps its own rolling world backups through MaxBackups, and panel backups sit on top of that, so a sync glitch never costs you weeks of base building.

Nitrox console commands

Run save, backup, op, deop, kick and list from the panel console. Players who know the admin password can also elevate themselves in-game with the login command.

Ryzen 9 9950X with DDR5

Entity tracking and saving happen on the server, so single-core speed matters. A Ryzen 9 9950X keeps hitches down when someone swims into an unexplored biome.

Password-locked, protected world

Free DDoS protection guards the network edge while ServerPassword keeps the world limited to people you invite, not whoever finds your address.

Subnautica server hosting at TheCrewHost starts at ₺440.00 ($11.00) per month and gives you a server with 8 GB to 32 GB of RAM, ready to run the Nitrox multiplayer mod. Subnautica has no official multiplayer, so shared worlds rely on Nitrox, an open-source community project with its own server application. Your server sits in our İstanbul datacenter on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X hardware with NVMe storage, and you control game mode, join password and autosave timing through server.cfg. Bases, Seamoths and Cyclops subs stay in one persistent world instead of vanishing whenever the friend who hosted logs off.

Does Subnautica have multiplayer, and what does a Nitrox server do?

Subnautica has no official multiplayer; playing together means using Nitrox, an open-source mod built by the community. Nitrox adds a synchronization layer to the game and relies on a separate server application that stores player positions, inventories, base pieces, vehicles and story progress.

The Nitrox 1.8 series supports the current release of Subnautica, and older game versions are no longer targeted. The mod covers the original Subnautica only; there is no Nitrox build for Below Zero. Nitrox is still in alpha, so the occasional desync is part of the experience, which is exactly why regular backups matter.

When you host Nitrox on your own PC, the world goes offline the moment you close the game. On a hosted server the world lives in İstanbul around the clock: one friend can scout the Aurora at midnight and you continue from the same state the next afternoon.

How much RAM does a Nitrox server need?

8 GB is a comfortable starting point for a small crew, because Nitrox load depends more on explored area and entity count than on raw player numbers. Every time someone enters a new biome, the server starts tracking the creatures, resources and wreck pieces there. Sprawling bases, packed storage lockers and several Cyclops subs push memory and disk use higher.

Nitrox technically allows up to 100 connections, but its developers recommend around five players for smooth play. A realistic breakdown: Gold 8GB handles a 2–5 player crew, while groups of 6–10 who build heavily get more headroom from Platinum 10GB or Diamond 12GB. Emerald and Xtreme only make sense for experimental crowded sessions or if you enable CreateFullEntityCache to pre-cache entities for the whole map.

On the CPU side, single-core speed directly affects save and sync steps, and NVMe storage prevents the brief freezes frequent autosaves can cause on slower disks.

Which server.cfg settings should you change first?

Almost everything about a Nitrox server is defined in server.cfg. Open it through the file manager or SFTP and edit it while the server is stopped.

The lines you will touch most are GameMode (SURVIVAL, FREEDOM, HARDCORE or CREATIVE), ServerPassword for joining and AdminPassword for admin rights. Nitrox generates a random AdminPassword on first launch, so replace it with a strong one you choose.

SaveInterval sets the autosave interval in milliseconds and defaults to two minutes. MaxBackups controls how many Nitrox backups are kept, and DisableAutoBackup switches them off entirely. KeepInventoryOnDeath stops items from dropping on death, PvPEnabled decides whether players can hurt each other, and DefaultPlayerPerm sets the permission level new arrivals receive. A blank Seed means players get a random starting position.

Restart from the panel after saving the file. Before making big changes to an existing world, take a backup so you can experiment without risking your progress.

Running, backing up and updating a Nitrox world

Most day-to-day administration happens in the panel console. save writes the world immediately, backup creates a separate copy, op and deop grant and revoke admin rights, kick removes a troublemaker, and list shows who is connected. Commands such as keepinventory and pvp let you adjust some rules without a restart.

The golden rule for updates is version matching: the server and every player must run the same Nitrox version. When Subnautica receives a large patch, you may need to wait for Nitrox to catch up, so resist updating the game and mod in a hurry and back up the world first.

You have two backup layers. Nitrox's own rolling backups are ideal for quick rollbacks, while TheCrewHost panel backups, both manual and automatic, are stored independently of Nitrox and give you a safer restore point before a version jump. You can also pull the world folder to your PC over SFTP whenever you want an offline copy.

How do friends join your Subnautica server?

Each player needs their own copy of Subnautica (Steam, Epic Games or Microsoft Store) plus the Nitrox Launcher on the same version as the server. After starting the game in multiplayer mode through the launcher, they open the Multiplayer section of the main menu, add a new server and enter the IP address and port shown in your panel. Nitrox defaults to UDP port 11000; if your server was assigned a different port, simply use the one displayed in the panel.

If you set ServerPassword, players are asked for it on connect. The first join can take a while because the server streams the current world state to that player, and big bases make the wait noticeably longer. InitialSyncTimeout controls how long that first sync is allowed to run.

Hosting in İstanbul means low latency for crews in Türkiye, so movement stays smooth when one person pilots the Cyclops while others walk around inside it.

How to Set Up a Subnautica Server

  1. 1

Pick a plan that fits your crew

Gold 8GB suits a 2–5 player Nitrox crew. If you plan large bases and several Cyclops subs, look at Platinum or Diamond instead.

  2. 2

Check out and let setup run automatically

Once payment clears, the server is provisioned automatically and appears at gamepanel.hostingmerkezi.net with its console, file manager and backup tools.

  3. 3

Set passwords and game mode in server.cfg

Stop the server, edit ServerPassword, AdminPassword and GameMode, then start it again. Tune SaveInterval and MaxBackups to match how often your group plays.

  4. 4

Upload an existing Nitrox world if you have one

If you already played on a self-hosted Nitrox server, move that save folder over SFTP. Single-player Subnautica saves cannot be converted into a Nitrox world.

  5. 5

Make sure everyone runs the same Nitrox version

Players install the Nitrox Launcher version that matches the server and point it at their Subnautica install. Version mismatches cause most failed connections.

  6. 6

Connect by IP and port, then dive

Launch through Nitrox, add the server's IP and port in the Multiplayer menu and enter the password. Once the initial sync finishes, the whole crew shares one ocean.

Frequently Asked Questions

What people ask most before renting a Subnautica server: Nitrox, saves and connecting.

How much does Subnautica server hosting cost?
Plans start at $11.00 (₺440.00) per month, beginning with Gold and its 8 GB of RAM. You can choose from 5 plans up to 32 GB. Every plan includes a Ryzen 9 9950X CPU, NVMe SSD storage, free DDoS protection, unlimited traffic and automatic backups; the plans differ in RAM, cores and disk space.
Subnautica has no official multiplayer, so how does this server work?
The server runs the server application of Nitrox, a community-made, open-source mod that adds multiplayer to Subnautica and is still in alpha. The world, player progress and bases are stored on the server, and players connect by installing the Nitrox Launcher alongside their own copy of the game.
Can I move my single-player Subnautica save to the server?
No. Single-player saves cannot be converted, because Nitrox uses its own save structure. If you already have a world from a self-hosted Nitrox server, you can upload that save folder through SFTP or the file manager and keep playing on the same Nitrox version.
Can I host a Subnautica: Below Zero server?
This server is for the original Subnautica with Nitrox. Nitrox does not currently support Below Zero, and Below Zero has no official dedicated server either. Because there is no reliable server option for Below Zero, we only recommend these plans for Subnautica itself.
How much RAM do I need and which plan should I pick?
The Gold plan with 8 GB is enough for crews of 2–5. If you grow to 6–10 players or build very large bases, Platinum 10GB or Diamond 12GB gives more headroom. Nitrox only runs smoothly with a limited number of players, so Emerald and Xtreme are unnecessary for most groups.
How do players connect to the server?
Each player installs the Nitrox Launcher matching the server version, starts the game through it and adds your server in the Multiplayer menu using the IP address and port from the panel (Nitrox defaults to UDP 11000). They enter the password if you set one. The first connection may load slowly while the world is synced.
How is my world backed up?
There are two layers. Nitrox autosaves and keeps rolling world backups according to MaxBackups, and you can type backup in the console for a manual one. On top of that, the TheCrewHost panel keeps automatic backups and lets you create extra ones any time. Since Nitrox is alpha software, back up before every update.
Is the server protected against DDoS attacks?
Yes. Every plan includes free DDoS protection at no extra cost. A Nitrox server accepts connections by IP and port, so anyone you share the address with can reach it; the protection filters malicious traffic while ServerPassword keeps the world closed to everyone except the people you invite.
How quickly is the server ready?
Setup starts automatically once your payment is confirmed, and the server shows up at gamepanel.hostingmerkezi.net. On first launch Nitrox generates its files and server.cfg, after which you set the password and game mode and invite friends. Our Turkish-speaking support team is available 24/7 through live chat, tickets, WhatsApp, phone and Discord.
Can I upgrade my plan later?
Yes, you can move to a plan with more RAM at any time. Slower saves after your crew or bases have grown are a good sign it is time. Take a panel backup before upgrading so you can restore the world quickly if anything goes wrong.
