The parts of running a VIAaaS instance that actually matter: address syntax, access restrictions, and hardware for the translation load.
VIAaaS runs ViaVersion as a standalone proxy, converting packets between versions so a client and a server on different releases can still talk to each other.
Since translation happens in the proxy, the target server never needs ViaVersion installed, which opens vanilla and modded servers without plugin support to other versions.
Players write the target into the address itself: _v sets the backend version, _p its port and _o the online mode, so one instance reaches many different servers.
Lock the instance to your own servers with allowed-back-addresses and blocked-back-addresses in viaaas.yml, and slow down bot floods with the built-in rate limits.
Every connection needs translation, compression and encryption, and Ryzen 9 9950X cores keep latency low even across wide gaps such as 1.8 to the current release.
viaaas.yml, the jwt-secret and any customizations under config/web are backed up automatically, and you edit them through the web file manager or SFTP.
VIAaaS server hosting at TheCrewHost starts at $6.00 (₺240.00) per month and gives you your own ViaVersion as a Service instance with full control of viaaas.yml. When a player's client version differs from the target server's, VIAaaS translates the protocol in between using ViaVersion; the player installs nothing and simply connects to a special hostname that contains the target server's address. That makes it possible to open a vanilla or modded server, where you cannot install plugins, to players on other versions. Your instance runs on Ryzen 9 9950X hardware in our İstanbul datacenter with free DDoS protection, and all you add is a wildcard DNS record on your domain.
VIAaaS, short for ViaVersion as a Service, is a standalone Minecraft Java Edition proxy developed under the ViaVersion GitHub organization. It has a single job: when the version a player runs differs from the version of the server they want to reach, it translates the protocol between them. The player installs no mod; they just connect to a special hostname that contains the target server's address.
Here is how it works in practice. Your instance lives on a domain such as via.yourdomain.com. When a player connects to mc.targetserver.com.via.yourdomain.com, VIAaaS reads the front part of that hostname, opens its own connection to the target server, and converts packets in both directions with ViaVersion. By default, the target server's version is detected automatically.
This matters most when you cannot install plugins on the target. Whether it is a pure vanilla server, an older modded server or one you simply do not administer, the translation happens in the proxy, so nothing on the server side needs to change.
All of VIAaaS's flexibility comes from options embedded in the hostname. In the simplest case, a player puts the target server's address in front of your instance's domain. When more control is needed, options slot in between: _p sets the target port, _v the backend version, _o the front-end online mode, and _u the username used for the backend connection.
When writing a version, dots become underscores, so 1.12.2 is written as _v1_12_2; a protocol number works too. Options can also use the underscore-separated form, such as p_25565. For example, mc.targetserver.com._p25566._v1_8.via.yourdomain.com tries to reach a 1.8 server on port 25566 from whatever client version the player is using.
If you would rather your players not build these strings by hand, the VIAaaS web page and the address generator linked from the project fill them in from a simple form. Pinning ready-made addresses for your most common targets in a Discord channel also saves a lot of questions.
You need a domain first, and if you do not have one, TheCrewHost's domain page can sort that out. In DNS, add a wildcard record such as *.via.yourdomain.com pointing at your instance's IP. Then add via.yourdomain.com to the host-name list in viaaas.yml; VIAaaS strips that suffix from incoming hostnames to find the target server.
Minecraft traffic listens on port 25565 by default, but if the port assigned to you in the panel is different, players append a colon and the port number to the end of the address. SRV records do not combine neatly with wildcard hostnames, so publishing the port openly is the cleanest option.
VIAaaS also has a web interface. Its default HTTPS port is 25543, and it is used to link Microsoft accounts for joining online-mode servers. Microsoft login requires your own Azure Client ID, defined in config/web/js/config.js. If you plan to use the web interface, talk to our support team about the extra port before you set it up. The project's install guide lists Java 21 or newer as a prerequisite.
Out of the box, VIAaaS lets users connect to almost any server, because allowed-back-addresses contains a wildcard. Leave an instance meant for your community wide open and others may use it for their own purposes, and large servers may end up blocking your instance's IP. The first task, then, is limiting allowed-back-addresses to your own servers' addresses.
blocked-back-addresses already blocks some big networks by default. With block-local-address enabled, connections to localhost and private network ranges are refused; if your targets are reachable on public IPs, keep it on. Against bots, rate-limit-connection-mc and rate-limit-login-mc cap connection and login rates per IP, while max-players defaults to 20 and should be raised to match your community.
Turning on force-online-mode requires online mode on the front end, which also helps keep bots out. The jwt-secret field is used to sign login tokens, and the config file itself warns you not to share it; keep it out of screenshots too.
VIAaaS does more work than a plain proxy. It does not just forward packets, it rewrites them from one version to another when needed, and it handles compression and encryption separately on each side of the connection. Per-player resource use is therefore higher than on a proxy like Velocity, though still light next to an actual game server.
An instance serving one target server for your own community runs comfortably on Bronze 4 GB. Multiple targets, hundreds of concurrent players, or translation across a wide span such as 1.8 to the current release are where Gold and above earn their place. Bronze through Diamond provide 4 vCores of Ryzen 9 9950X, Emerald 6 and Xtreme 12; on a busy instance, core count is where you feel the difference.
One caution: blocks, items and movement do not line up perfectly across versions, so players arriving through VIAaaS can trigger anti-cheat plugins on the target server. If you use it with your own server, test your anti-cheat settings with translated connections before rolling it out.
Bronze 4 GB covers a single target server and a few dozen players; many targets or wide version gaps call for Gold or higher.
Point a wildcard A record such as *.via.yourdomain.com at your instance's IP so every generated hostname resolves; get a domain first if you do not have one.
Add your domain to the host-name list, restrict allowed-back-addresses to your own servers, and set max-players to suit your community.
For online-mode targets, have players link their account in the web interface or install OpenAuthMod on their client; offline-mode targets skip this step.
Try targetserver._v1_8.via.yourdomain.com with the port from the panel, join on a different client version, and confirm translation works end to end.
Pin addresses for common targets on Discord or your website, and keep a close eye on anti-cheat behavior during the first few days.
