Why TheCrewHost for Limbo?

What a waiting, AFK or fallback server needs, and the cheapest way to restart your main server without emptying the network.

A world loaded from a schematic

Upload your lobby or waiting area as a .schem file and point level-name at it; with no terrain generation, disk and memory use stay remarkably low.

Built-in proxy forwarding

Enable one of bungeecord, velocity-modern or bungee-guard in server.properties and add the key to forwarding-secrets to place Limbo straight behind your proxy.

Tunable tick rate

ticks-per-second defaults to 5 and view-distance to 6, and disabling chat squeezes out a little more, so hundreds of waiting players cost very little.

Limbo-specific plugins

Limbo has its own plugin API; the official ViaLimbo plugin admits other client versions, and Floodgate-Limbo lets Bedrock players in through Geyser.

Brand the waiting screen

Use motd, tab-header, tab-footer and resource-pack to carry your network's identity into the waiting area and tell players what is happening from inside the world.

Whitelist and permission file

enforce-whitelist applies a vanilla-style whitelist.json, permission.yml controls rights such as chat, and free DDoS protection sits in front of the server.

Limbo server hosting at TheCrewHost starts at $6.00 (₺240.00) per month and gives you LOOHP's lightweight Limbo server with full control over server.properties. Limbo is not a survival server: it generates no terrain, runs no mobs, ticks at 5 TPS by default and shows a small area loaded from a .schem schematic. That makes it the cheap place to park players during maintenance, restarts or queue waits instead of dropping them from your network. It runs on Ryzen 9 9950X hardware in İstanbul, supports Velocity modern forwarding and BungeeGuard without extra plugins, and includes free DDoS protection.

What is Limbo, and what does it do on a Minecraft network?

Limbo is a standalone server written from scratch by LOOHP with one purpose in mind: holding players somewhere cheap. It is not a full game server like Paper or vanilla. It does not generate terrain, run mob AI or process redstone; it displays a fixed area loaded from a schematic file and keeps players there.

On a network, Limbo typically covers a handful of jobs. It acts as a fallback so players are not kicked while the main survival server restarts, serves as a waiting room during maintenance, gives AFK players a lightweight place to idle instead of occupying a heavy server, and hosts the waiting area for queue systems. Put it at the end of your proxy's try list and it becomes the safe harbor players land in whenever other servers are down.

Each Limbo build targets a single Minecraft version. The current release supports 26.3, and older builds going back to 1.17.1 remain on the download page. For players on other client versions, the official ViaLimbo plugin fills the gap.

How do you design the waiting area with a schematic?

Limbo's world is a .schem file. Build your waiting area on any server, export it as a schematic with a tool such as WorldEdit, and upload the file to the same folder as the Limbo jar. The level-name line in server.properties defines the world name and schematic file separated by a semicolon; the default is world;spawn.schem.

The spawn point lives on the world-spawn line as the world name, x, y and z coordinates, plus yaw and pitch. level-dimension lets the area render with an overworld, nether or end atmosphere; a dark end sky is a popular choice for making maintenance notices stand out.

default-gamemode ships as creative. If you do not want players interacting with the schematic, switch it to adventure or spectator, and use allow-flight if you want them to fly. While players wait, tab-header and tab-footer can carry status messages, and the motd accepts JSON formatting for color. Keeping the schematic compact also trims the chunk data sent to each player, even at view-distance 6.

Connecting Limbo behind Velocity or BungeeCord

Limbo handles proxy forwarding natively, with no plugin required. server.properties has three mutually exclusive switches: bungeecord reads classic BungeeCord ip_forward data, velocity-modern accepts Velocity's modern forwarding, and bungee-guard validates BungeeCord forwarding protected by a BungeeGuard token. Set exactly one of them to true.

For modern forwarding or BungeeGuard, put the key in forwarding-secrets, separating several keys with semicolons. On a Velocity network, the cleanest setup is enabling velocity-modern and copying the key from forwarding.secret into that field.

On the proxy, add Limbo to the servers list like any other backend. In Velocity, placing it last in the try list means players drop into Limbo automatically whenever the lobby and game servers are unavailable. Sending them back once the main server returns is the proxy's job, handled by a reconnect plugin or the /send command, because Limbo itself never moves players to another server.

How much RAM does Limbo need?

Far less than even the smallest plan on this page. Thanks to the default 5 ticks per second, a compact schematic world and no entity simulation, hundreds of waiting players fit into a small slice of Bronze 4 GB. Turning allow-chat off improves performance a little further, as the config file itself points out.

Three things push memory up: schematic size, plugins and concurrent player count. A large, detailed lobby schematic, players arriving on other versions through ViaLimbo, or Bedrock traffic via Floodgate-Limbo are the cases where Silver or Gold gives comfortable headroom.

Higher tiers only make sense for large networks where thousands of players can land in the waiting area at once; the extra cores on Emerald and Xtreme help absorb hundreds of connections arriving in the same second during a big restart. Our honest advice for most networks is to start Limbo on the smallest plan and watch memory use in the console before deciding anything else.

Plugins, version support and permissions

Limbo ships its own plugin API. Plugins written for Paper or Bukkit will not load; you install plugins built for Limbo into the plugins folder and restart. The project offers two official ones: ViaLimbo, which uses ViaProxy to let players on other Minecraft versions join, and Floodgate-Limbo, an adaptation of Geyser's Floodgate that admits Bedrock players.

Version matching matters here. Since each Limbo build targets one version, pick the build that matches your network's main version and install ViaLimbo for anyone connecting on something else. When Minecraft updates, you may need to wait for a new Limbo build and install it.

Permissions are handled in permission.yml; the ability to chat, for instance, is tied to the limboserver.chat permission. Turning on enforce-whitelist applies a vanilla-format whitelist.json. Disable log-player-ip-addresses and player IPs are withheld from the logs, which is useful if you want to keep less personal data around.

How to Set Up a Limbo Server

  1. 1

    Start with the entry plan

Limbo is extremely light, so Bronze 4 GB suits most networks; consider Silver for large schematics or if you run ViaLimbo and Floodgate-Limbo.

  2. 2

Prepare the waiting area as a schematic

Build it on a test server, export it as .schem, upload it next to the Limbo jar over SFTP, and update the level-name and world-spawn lines.

  3. 3

Pick a forwarding mode and enter the key

In server.properties, set only one of velocity-modern, bungee-guard or bungeecord to true, and add the key to forwarding-secrets where required.

  4. 4

Set the game mode and messages

Switch default-gamemode to adventure or spectator, then put your maintenance and waiting messages into the motd, tab-header and tab-footer.

  5. 5

    Add Limbo to your proxy

Register the IP:port shown in the panel in the proxy's servers section, place it last in Velocity's try list, and reload the proxy.

  6. 6

Test the scenario with a restart

Restart the main server and confirm players land in Limbo, then check that /send or your reconnect plugin returns them once it is back up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions worth answering before you add a Limbo waiting or AFK server to your network.

How much does Limbo server hosting cost?
At $6.00 a month (₺240.00), Bronze 4 GB is the plan almost every Limbo deployment ends up on; the 7 tiers reaching up to Xtreme 32 GB exist for networks where thousands of players can hit the waiting area at once. The hardware underneath never changes between tiers, only the RAM, vCores and disk space do.
How much RAM is enough for Limbo?
The 4 GB Bronze plan is more than enough for a compact schematic and a few hundred waiting players. Consider Silver or Gold for a large lobby schematic or if you run ViaLimbo or Floodgate-Limbo. On big networks where thousands of players can land at once, the extra cores on Emerald and Xtreme help absorb restart waves.
What is the difference between Limbo and NanoLimbo?
Limbo displays a schematic world, has its own plugin API and targets a single Minecraft version per build, needing ViaLimbo for others. NanoLimbo has no world and no plugins and is far more minimal, but one jar covers a wide range from 1.7 up to recent releases. Choose Limbo for a visual waiting area and NanoLimbo when you only need to hold players.
Which Minecraft version does Limbo run?
The current build targets 26.3, and older builds going back to 1.17.1 remain available on the download page. Since each build is tied to one version, choose the one that matches your network's main version. For players on other client versions, install the official ViaLimbo plugin.
Can I install Paper plugins on Limbo?
No. Limbo uses its own plugin API rather than the Paper or Bukkit one, so only plugins written for Limbo will work; ViaLimbo and Floodgate-Limbo are the official examples. Upload plugin jars to the plugins folder with the web file manager or SFTP, then restart the server.
When will my Limbo server be ready?
Limbo installs by itself once your payment clears and shows up in your server list at gamepanel.hostingmerkezi.net. Its first run writes server.properties; from there the work is yours: upload the waiting-area schematic, pick a forwarding mode and register the server with your proxy. With those three steps done, restarts have somewhere to send players.
How do players get into Limbo?
There is no need to hand out Limbo's address; everyone joins through your proxy as usual. Once Limbo sits in the proxy's servers list and at the very end of Velocity's try list, players appear in the waiting area the moment the lobby and game servers become unreachable. For jobs like moving AFK players, /send does it by hand.
Is my Limbo server backed up?
Automatic backups are on, and they cover your schematic, server.properties, permission.yml and plugin configs. Limbo has few files, but each one represents work, so take a manual backup from the panel before trying a new lobby schematic; if you do not like the result, the old waiting area is one restore away.
Does DDoS protection cover my Limbo server?
Yes. Even though Limbo sits behind the proxy as a backend, it has its own IP address, and free DDoS protection covers that address too. Network-level floods are absorbed there, while at the application level the key you set for velocity-modern or bungee-guard turns away anyone trying to skip the proxy with a forged identity.
Can I upgrade my plan later?
Yes, and you are free to step up a tier at any point. With Limbo, the need usually appears once the network grows and hundreds of players land in the waiting area at the same moment during restarts. Check memory use in the console before upgrading, because Limbo often uses far less than people expect.
